  • Stroke thrombectomy training for IRs

Posted by barrad on August 19, 2021 at 9:55 am

I am an attending interventional radiologist looking for an opportunity to become proficient in stroke thrombectomy.  I would like to continue practicing while being trained as opposed to doing a formal fellowship.  Does anyone have a suggestion on how this could be done?  Does anybody know an IR who has done this or have any contacts that I could reach out to?  Would it be possible to work at an academic center as an IR and receive training from the neuro IRs?   Thanks.

If a DR attending that does basic procedures said they wanted to learn mesenteric angio/embo would you teach them? Would you really let them do the case? Whats the probability that shadowing you once a week or however often would result in skills for true independent practice?

Cmon man, if you dont do a fellowship no ones gonna let you do anything more than watch them do procedures on their own.

People only teach fellow attendings the procedures they dont want to do and are easily learnable ie arthrogram, para/Thora, etc.

My two cents I could be totally off base

I know of situations like these happening where a stroke center has trained local IRs how to perform it (because it improves patient care, and the lifestyle of the academic NIRs!). If the local stroke center is further away (i.e. requiring helicopter transport or hours drive away) that can a factor you bring up as to why you want to learn to provide the service.

You should try to reach out to the local NIR department and see if they have any enthusiasm teaching you via locums or another method.
