  • External USB CDDVD drive for data import to PACS

Posted by Unknown Member on December 11, 2020 at 12:35 pm

I am looking for an optimal make/model of an external USB CD/DVD drive for the data import to PACS. Our new hospital PCs are coming without a drive. We need the best combination of the read speed and fault tolerance. Will appreciate any relevant information.
    Thank you.

Just go with Electronic Image sharing. Unless the  USB drive costs are on par with DVD you will be spending money on old technology

You can’t “just go with electronic image sharing” because people still show up at the hospitals with disks or USB’s in hand so you have to have a way to continue to ingest them.  The fact that very few computers now come with the DVD drives complicates things and we have use external drives.  IT technology is always 10-15 years ahead of healthcare and imposes it’s idea of how things should be done with very little leeway for “legacy” systems and means.

This stuff is ubiquitous. Just go buy whatever drive you want. Or talk to your IT and ask for some PCs that have drives in them. Id be surprised if they didnt already have a model. Usually you from a certain vendor like HP.

While you may need an external drive..
You should be working with those facilities that are burning CDs. You can can either work with them to set up a VPN or some other electronic image sharing solution.

Saying electronic sharing to eliminate disks will never go away.  We get disks from all over the country and some from out of the country.  There is no way of setting up connections to everyone.
Onto the drive.  We just use a standard usb cd/dvd external drive.  Works fine.  Don’t need anything fancy.  If your IT has a standard just go with that.

I’ve used the LG GP50nB40 model before with some success but that one is USB 2.0 . I have been looking at the Wanmingtek external as an upgrade to usb 3.0 but haven’t purchased it yet.
