Ohio Voters Overwhelmingly Back Amendment viewed as Protecting Abortion Rights

A new [link=https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2023/07/24/ohioans-back-abortion-rights-amendment-a-test-case-for-other-states/70413318007/]USA Today/Suffolk University survey[/link] of Ohio showed the amendment guaranteeing access to reproductive services backed by a double-digit margin, 58% to 32%.

Significant support crossed partisan lines, including a third of Republicans and a stunning 85% of independent women, a key group of persuadable voters.
[link=https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/4138668-texas-judge-rules-against-abortion-ban-for-dangerous-pregnancies/]Judge rules against Texas abortion ban for women with dangerous pregnancy complication[/link]
Travis County District Judge Jessica Mangrum ruled that uncertainty in the medical exceptions within the law makes it difficult for doctors to act on their good faith judgement.

Instead, for fear of liability under the law, they could be forced to bar or delay the provision of abortion care to pregnant persons in Texas for whom an abortion would prevent or alleviate a risk of death or risk to their health.

The Court finds that physical medical conditions include, at a minimum: a physical medical condition or complication of pregnancy that poses a risk of infection, or otherwise makes continuing a pregnancy unsafe for the pregnant person; a physical medical condition that is exacerbated by pregnancy, cannot be effectively treated during pregnancy, or requires recurrent invasive intervention; and/or a fetal condition where the fetus is unlikely to survive the pregnancy and sustain life after birth, the [link=https://reproductiverights.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/Zurawski-v-Texas_TI.pdf]injunction states.[/link]

Over 700k Ohio voters already cast ballots for a sleepy early August election with only one issue on the ballot.

Cool.  Supposedly some shenanigans a foot with GOP changing polling locations in Cuyahoga and Summit counties at the last minute.

[link=https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/08/politics/cnn-poll-abortion-electoral-litmus-test-supreme-court/index.html]CNN poll

[/link]
Abortions role as an electoral litmus test hasnt faded a year after Supreme Court decision overturning Roe
A 64% majority of US adults say they disapprove of last years Supreme Court ruling that women do not have a constitutional right to an abortion, with half strongly disapproving an assessment thats almost entirely unchanged from CNNs poll last July in the immediate wake of the decision.

The new poll suggests that the issues importance as an electoral litmus test hasnt diminished. In May 2022, immediately after the leaked draft of the Dobbs decisions, 26% of Americans said they would only vote for a candidate who shared their views on abortion. In the latest poll, that number stands at 29%. Another 55% say theyd consider a candidates position on abortion as one of many important factors, for a combined total of 84% who say theyre likely to pay attention to candidates position on abortion when voting. Just 16% say they dont see abortion as a major issue, a record low in CNN polling dating back to 1996.

While the importance of abortion has risen across ideological lines, the change is particularly sharp on the left. Self-described liberals are now 14 percentage points likelier than self-described conservatives to say that theyd treat a candidates views on abortion as a litmus test, up from a 4-point difference last January.

Ohio is looking like a hell no issue 1. Like 80% no around Cleveland. Even Trumpy places like where I live are a no. By the end of the night the no on issue 1 is gonna be a punt to the taint of the OH GOP losers.

Looking at county break down Im pretty surprised at some of the no counties. It looks like mainly the Jim Jordan area voted yes. And some pockets of Pennsyl-tucky-ginia.

Even most Republicans are in favor of keeping abortion legal.
Abortion Ranks as Important Issue for Most Voters
A new [link=https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/4145575-abortion-ranks-as-important-issue-for-most-americans-poll/]Economist/YouGov survey[/link] found that 77% of respondents said abortion rights are either very or somewhat important, while 23% of those surveyed said the issue is not very important or unimportant to them.

Along political party lines, 87 percent of Democrat respondents said abortion rights is an important issue, compared with 73 percent of independent respondents and 72 percent of Republicans.

There was almost no variation by race, with 78 percent of Black respondents saying abortion rights are important, compared with 77 percent of Hispanic respondents and 76 percent of white respondents.

Younger Americans were most likely to see abortion as an important issue, with that view comprising 85 percent of respondents between the ages of 18 and 29 years, 77 percent of respondents between 30 and 44, 72 percent of respondents between 45 and 64 and 78 percent of respondents 65 years or older.

Abortion Rights Groups Push Ballot Measures in 2024
Abortion-rights supporters are working to put reproductive rights directly to voters in 2024, part of an effort to boost turnout and buoy Democratic candidates after a string of state-level victories on the issue, [link=https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-08-09/ohio-issue-1-win-has-abortion-rights-groups-planning-2024-ballot-measures]Bloomberg[/link] reports.

On Tuesday, voters in Ohio overwhelmingly rejected a measure that would have made it harder to pass an initiative on the ballot in November that would enshrine abortion rights into that states constitution.

Now, advocates are backing abortion-rights ballot initiatives in the presidential battleground of Arizona. Similar efforts are underway in Florida, Maryland, Missouri, New York and South Dakota, most of which have Senate elections in 2024.

Hannity Says GOP May Be Too Extreme on Abortion
Sean Hannity [link=https://www.mediaite.com/politics/hannity-suggests-gop-is-too-radical-on-abortion-after-sobering-ohio-vote-i-never-thought-id-quote-bill-clinton/]suggested that[/link] the Republican Partys hardline stance on abortion is out of step with the American people and could hurt them in the next election.

Said Hannity: I think the American people and I consider myself pro-life, I believe in the sanctity of life, but I think politically that there is Republicans have gotta say as Bill Clinton once said I never thought Id quote him rare, legal, and Id add the word[s], very early in a pregnancy. That seems to be politically where the country is. Maybe Im wrong. But well see. That vote in Ohio is pretty, pretty sobering.
Ohio Supreme Court Clears Path for Abortion Rights Vote
The Ohio Supreme Court cleared the path for a November vote on abortion access by rejecting a legal challenge to backers petitions, the [link=https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/politics/2023/08/11/ohio-supreme-court-rejects-legal-challenge-to-abortion-rights-issue/70567955007/]Columbus Dispatch[/link] reports.

In a unanimous decision, the Ohio Supreme Court denied a lawsuit filed by several Republicans to boot the measure from the Nov. 7 ballot. The GOP politicos had argued that abortion rights activists failed to include on their petitions the language of state abortion laws that would be repealed if the constitutional amendment passed.
California GOP May Drop Opposition to Abortion
A rebellious campaign within the California Republican Party to break away from its historic opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage is dividing the party weeks before planned appearances by former President Trump and other GOP White House hopeful, the [link=https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2023-08-18/california-gop-abortion-same-sex-marriage-platform-trump-desantis-scott]Los Angeles Times[/link] reports.

A proposed platform overhaul, which could be voted on at the state GOPs fall convention in Anaheim, is a remarkable break from conservative dogma in the state that nurtured Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon.

____

Will CA Republican primary voters let them get away with it?
South Carolinas Near Total Abortion Ban Upheld
The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled Wednesday the states new six-week abortion ban is constitutional, allowing the law to go into effect, the [link=https://www.thestate.com/news/politics-government/article278521399.html#storylink=cpy]Columbia State[/link] reports.

The 4-to-1 ruling comes after a new justice was elected and the General Assembly rewrote a previous six-week law. Earlier this year, the previous iteration of the court had ruled 3-2 against a different version of a six-week abortion ban, saying at the time that it violated a womans constitutional right to privacy.

The South Carolina Supreme Court, made up of five male justices, in June heard oral arguments over whether a revived six-week abortion ban in South Carolina violates a womans right to privacy under the states constitution. Before Wednesdays decision, the states 20-week abortion law was in place, making South Carolina an unlikely abortion destination in the Southeast.

The [link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grxjfUH6-Lw]one-minute ad[/link], entitled These Guys, will run for two weeks digitally through YouTube and Connected TV. Reproductive health care decisions are among the most personal a woman will ever make. They are choices that should be made between you and your doctor. And, the last people who should be involved are these guys, the ad reads.

It includes a clip from former [link=https://thehill.com/people/donald-trump/]President Trump [/link]bragging about being behind the end of Roe v. Wade, highlighted that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed a six-week abortion ban in his state, and included a clip from Sen.
