• Hazard Pay for Radiologic Technologists During the Coronavirus Pandemic

Posted by 221019899_424 on April 12, 2020 at 10:20 am

The first COVID-19 patients started coming into our hospital at mid March of this year and radiology has been integral in diagnosing and caring for these patients. Performing portable chest x-rays, CAT scans, and even abdominal ultrasound on these patients, radiological technologists spend a considerable amount of time coming into direct contact with these patients. As you know, the CDC has already classified the coronavirus as a quarantinable communicable disease which spreads easily between people, and a vaccine is at least 18 months away.
Looking to federal law as a precedent, government employees are entitled to hazard pay when they perform work with or in close proximity to virulent biologicals, which are materials of micro-organic nature which when introduced into the body are likely to cause serious disease or fatality and for which protective devices do not afford complete protection. This novel coronavirus is a virulent biological which radiologic technologists have had to work in close proximity to when performing medical imaging involving surfaces, people, and objects infected with this virus. Even if an infection is not fatal, it can cause respiratory illness including permanent damage to lungs.
Currently, there is a federal lawsuit ([link=https://hr.cch.com/eld/BraswellvUSAComplaint.pdf]Braswell v. The United States[/link], No. 20-359C filed on March 27, 2020) as well as a [link=https://federalnewsnetwork.com/pay/2020/04/senate-democrats-propose-pandemic-pay-bumps-for-frontline-feds/]proposal by Senate Democrats[/link] for a “$25,000 pandemic premium payments for federal employees working on the front lines of the coronavirus response” in order to properly compensate those workers. How many of you out there are currently receiving hazard pay?

I have not heard of any R.T.’s getting hazard pay anywhere.  Definitely not where I am currently employed.

No hazard pay.  I think some hospitals are giving bonus pay for extra shifts, but not where I work.

No hazard pay in our $8 billion health system. We even had one of our X-ray techs pass away and several ICU nurses and staff at one of our other hospitals die from covid too.
Other area hospitals have given out hazard pay, bonuses and paid time off. They also have bonus pay for picking up extra shifts ranging from $20-$30/hr extra.
A friend that’s a nurse has been taking advantage of this and making big money. Now she’s headed to California for 3 months and making $90,000.

In Feb 2021 our hospital rewarded all of the front line workers a $1500 bonus a true blessing

My system would cover your quarantine time if you got COVID, and they gave a very small bonus and our raises that they first said wasn’t going to happen. COVID was good for business so they didn’t have a choice.
