GOP Stars Flee CPAC
Many of the Republican Partys marquee players including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence and the top GOP leaders in Congress will skip this weeks Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland, dealing a significant blow to the annual gatherings stature, [link=https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/ron-desantis-will-skip-cpac-rcna72537]NBC News[/link] reports.

The abandonment of CPAC, which runs from Wednesday through Saturday, comes as its chairman, Matt Schlapp, defends himself against a lawsuit alleging that he fondled a male aide to then-Senate candidate Herschel Walker in Georgia in October, without the aides consent.

Trump Explains Why Others Are Skipping CPAC
Donald Trump [link=https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/109953683010180921]on Truth Social[/link]:
The only reason certain candidates wont be going to CPAC is because the crowds have no interest in anything they have to say. Theyve heard it all before, and dont want to hear it again. But my speech, on Saturday night, is already a sold out monster. They are trying to expand the room and space.
Rick Scott doubles down on McConnell feud in defiant CPAC speech
Its not just the Democrats in Washington who are destroying our country, Scott said. You have heard the famous quote: We have met the enemy and he is us.
Unfortunately, some of the leaders of our old Republican establishment have been in Washington way too long and forgotten why they came here, he added. Theyve gotten used to caving in to the Democrats. They do it over and over and over. Instead of the Democrats compromising their liberal principles, they roll over, and compromise our conservative principles.

CPAC looks dead. Nikki was there and people were shouting we love Trump at her while she was doing an interview. Her campaign is toast.

We are pleased that our conference welcomes a wide array of conservative perspectives from people of different backgrounds, but we are concerned about the rise in antisemitic rhetoric (or Jew hatred) in our country and around the globe, whether it be in the corridors of power and academia or through the online rantings of bigots like Fuentes, Schlapp said.

Fuentes has repeatedly made antisemitic and racist comments online on social media and livestreaming platforms and denied that the Holocaust happened.
[link=https://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/3887462-at-cpac-a-desperate-trump-gets-whats-right-terribly-wrong/]At CPAC, a desperate Trump gets whats right terribly wrong[/link]
No one who cares about America as a constitutional union should underestimate the danger Trump poses. He made clear he would bring totalitarian wrath to his enemies if elected when he[link=https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/05/i-am-your-retribution-trump-rules-supreme-at-cpac-as-he-relaunches-bid-for-white-house] told[/link] his CPAC audience, I am your warrior . . . your justice. And for those who have been wronged and betrayed: I am your retribution.
Nor should anyone ignore how likely it is that Trump will become the GOP nominee. His divide-and-conquer approach is central to the significant, [link=https://www.aei.org/op-eds/the-only-trumpers-the-gop-rump-that-could-guarantee-democratic-wins-for-years/]Only Trump[/link] base of [link=https://www.npr.org/2020/11/17/935910276/the-white-elephants-in-the-room]white evangelicals[/link]  many of whom believe that he is on their side in an end times battle over a diversifying America.

In addition, we have typically seen Trump unwilling to tailor his tactics to a general electorate in order to win and his indulgence in alienating extremism only seems to wax with his desperation. Trump seldom trims his narcissistic sails. In September, he all but threatened [link=https://www.politico.com/news/2022/09/15/trump-warns-of-problems-like-weve-never-seen-if-hes-indicted-00056911]widespread violence[/link] on the streets if he was indicted. On March 3, he found new ways to align himself with violent insurrectionists he released a pseudo-patriotic [link=https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/03/donald-trump-song-charity-single-january-6-prisoners]recording[/link] featuring himself and the J6 Prison Choir.

None of this will play well with the swing voters in battleground states who determine presidential elections.

At CPAC, Trump summarized 2024 by saying: This is it. Either they win, or we win, and if they win, we no longer have a country.
Again, he got it partly right: If he is the nominee, there is one side whose winning likely means we no longer have a country at least not one most of would recognize or want. It is no small error, however, getting wrong which side that is.

[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/03/08/matt-schlapp-cpac-accuser-sexual-misconduct/]GOP operative comes forward as accuser in sexual misconduct claim against CPAC Head

[/link]

Alexandria Circuit Court Chief Judge Lisa Bondareff Kemler described balancing the request for anonymity with the publics interest in knowing the accusers identity and the ability of Schlapp and his wife, Mercedes, to defend themselves. Mercedes Schlapp is also accused of defamation in the suit.

The plaintiff has not established I think the heavy burden of establishing both a concrete need for secrecy and identifying the consequences that would likely befall him if forced to proceed in his own name, she said. The judge said she would issue an order requiring Huffman to add his name to the suit.

By putting his name on the record, Huffman will test anew Schlapps support with the board of CPACs parent organization, the American Conservative Union, and with other Republican allies at a time when he faces [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/02/28/matt-schlapp-cpac-assault-claim-leadership/?itid=lk_inline_manual_13]a wide range of challenges[/link], including heavy staff turnover and [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/03/03/haley-trump-cpac-2024-presidential/?itid=lk_inline_manual_13]reduced turnout[/link] at CPACs flagship conference in the Washington area last week. The Republican power broker and leading booster of former president Donald Trump has declined to respond to questions from The Post about those issues and Huffmans allegations.
[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/05/25/cpac-treasurer-matt-schlapp-resigns-letter/]CPAC treasurer accuses chief Matt Schlapp of financial mismanaement.[/link]

The resignation letter adds pressure on Schlapp, who is fighting a defamation lawsuit from a campaign staffer who alleges he groped him
Bob Beauprez, the treasurer of the American Conservative Union and a board member for eight years, said he had lost confidence in the organizations financial statements and could not solicit donations in good faith. He blamed Schlapp for excessive staff departures and suggested that violations of the organizations bylaws could expose the storied institution to lawsuits or even criminal prosecution.

A cancer has been metastasizing within the organization for years. It must be diagnosed, treated, and cured, or it will destroy the organization and its foundation, Beauprez said in the letter, which was obtained by The Washington Post. Ive come to think that the expectations for my role as a director and officer is much the same as that of a mushroom To be kept in the dark and fed a lot of manure. I no longer am willing to comply.

The 13-page letter, delivered Tuesday ahead of a scheduled June 1 board meeting, escalates the internal and public pressure on Schlapp, who as ACU chairman since 2014, has become a fixture in conservative media. But his leadership is [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/02/28/matt-schlapp-cpac-assault-claim-leadership/?itid=lk_inline_manual_8]facing multiple challenges[/link] amid corporate backlash over CPACs embrace of the far right in the United States and abroad, as well as reduced turnout at its flagship Washington-area conference in March. Schlapp called the event a home run.

CPAC Vice Chair resigns, calls for investigation into Matt Schlapp and others

Gerows resignation follows months of turbulence at the prominent conservative organization, where Chair Matt Schlapp [link=https://www.politico.com/news/2023/01/17/matt-schlapp-sued-sexual-assault-allegations-00078163]earlier this year was sued[/link] by a former Herschel Walker Senate campaign staffer over allegations of sexual assault. Board member and treasurer Bob Beauprez [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/05/25/cpac-treasurer-matt-schlapp-resigns-letter/]resigned from his position[/link] in May, citing concerns over the organizations financial reports, while Randy Neugebauer and Mike Rose also stepped down from the board earlier this year.

With his departure, Gerow is calling on the board to authorize an independent investigation into sexual battery allegations made against Matt Schlapp, as well as an independent forensic audit of the organizations finances, he said in a statement to POLITICO.

Gerow also urged the board to obtain a written lawyers opinion that the organization is fully complying with its own bylaws as well as D.C. statutes concerning nonprofits. And he suggested that the CPAC board conduct a thorough review all the exit interviews of the large number of staff who have recently left.

     [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/08/26/matt-schlapp-cpac-sexual-misconduct-allegations/]Washington Post[/link]
Earlier this year, Schlapp was sued for alleged sexual battery and defamation by a Republican campaign operative who claimed that the CPAC leader groped his crotch during a campaign trip last fall. Schlapp has denied the claim.

In addition to that lawsuit, some board members and staffers have been told about other incidents involving Schlapp, 55, and two younger men, multiple people with direct knowledge of the situation said.
Matt Schlapp Held an Exorcism at CPAC Offices
When a group of employees resigned in protest from conservative activist group CPAC last year, the organizations power coupleMatt Schlapp and his wife, Mercedesfelt it was time for a new beginning, the [link=https://www.thedailybeast.com/matt-schlapp-held-an-exorcism-at-cpac-offices-after-junior-employees-resigned?ref=wrap]Daily Beast[/link] reports.

As part of the reset, the Schlapps turned to a priest to evict satanic spirits from the D.C. offices.
