Initial observations of CPAC:

Mike Lee: Warns conservatives not to reward gimmicks and catchy one-liners and to beware of candidates who promise things they will not deliver.  He also urged principled moderation.  The conservative candidate who ignores moderates is as misguided as the moderate candidate who ignores conservatives, he said. The candidate we both want can attract both without alienating either.  Mike Lee is the invisible hand that guides.  Highly respected. Conservatives will do well if they heed his advise.

Jeb Bush: Viewed by conservatives with suspicion due to his support of common core, his stance on immigration and his more “evolved” position on gay marriage. He has some heavy lifting to do in order to get conservatives excited about him. His strong economic record keeps him in the running. He left Florida in very good shape.

Ted Cruz: Big push for States as the laboratories of Democracy. Wants to repeal “every word” of Obamacare and wants to abolish the IRS. He wants to create political “disruption” to break free of politics-as-usual in Washington, in the same sense as disruptive technologies change the world we live in.
”Warned activists at the Conservative Political Action Conference not to trust squishy moderates who talk about conservative principles but dont have a record of activism a veiled jab at likely presidential rivals such as Jeb Bush
We all know that in a campaign, every candidate comes up and tells you, Im the most conservative guy thats ever lived, thats just what they say, Cruz said. Im pretty confident you havent seen any speakers come up yet to say, [link=http://www.politico.com/story/2015/02/ted-cruz-cpac-2015-speech-115547.html]Im a squishy moderate who stands for nothing.[/link]  Every one of them will say, You betcha, hoo diddly, Im as conservative as all get-out.
[link=http://hotair.com/archives/2015/02/26/quotes-of-the-day-2009/]http://hotair.com/archive…uotes-of-the-day-2009/[/link]

Scott Walker: A favorite among conservatives. Surprisingly polished and nimble. He is also emphasizing state’s rights, right to bear arms and tax reform. Big proponent of rebuilding the military and repairing damaged relationships with our allies. His speech was anxiously awaited and received a rousing ovation.
”Here in America there is a reason we celebrate the Fourth of July and not April 15th,” Walker said. “Because in America, we celebrate our independence from the government, not our dependence on it.”
He has been anointed as the man to carry the torch and will almost assuredly win the CPAC straw poll by a large margin. The conservative press would like to crown him right now and move on to the general elections. They want to avoid the war of attrition that occurred with the last set of debates.

Chris Christie: Should go home and hang it up.  He is damaged goods. Will sell out for cheap.

Ben Carson: Very well received by populist conservatives, but vulnerable due to miscues and inexperience.  The media is already feasting on him because he misattributed some quote to Alexis De Tocqueville. Reagan and Clinton both did the same, but those were more forgiving times.
[link=http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slatest/2015/02/26/ben_carson_cpac_leaflet_quotes_alexis_de_tocqueville_except_de_tocqueville.html]http://www.slate.com/blog…pt_de_tocqueville.html[/link]

Sarah Palin:Surprised with a very good and serious speech to veterans, devoid of gimmicks. She’s not going to play a large role this time around, because the conservative caucus is really focused on winning.  She’s perceived as entertaining and energizing, but overly gimmicky. She’s damaged goods due to the many vicious character assassination attacks levied at her by the Obama-fawning press and due to some self-inflicted wounds. The caucus is only interested in serious contenders who can win. They don’t want a Tina Fay rerun.  Sorry Charlie, CPAC is looking for tuna that tastes good, not tuna with good taste.
[link=http://www.mediaite.com/tv/sarah-palin-talks-ptsd-and-veterans-in-surprisingly-un-gimmicky-cpac-speech/]http://www.mediaite.com/t…-gimmicky-cpac-speech/[/link]

Marco Rubio: Yet to come. Viewed as electable and safe, but not the top choice. If Walker and/or Bush falter, he’ll rise to the top.

I don’t really lean either way politically but I find Ben Carson to be a little on the nutty side and Sarah Palin is dumb.  You’re saying vicious character attacks, but I just see her as a character, not one that I find ready for leadership.

Walker sounds strong I admit.  I think Bush also solid in his performance.

Rand Paul might win the straw poll but that’s because he packed the stands again.

Jeb Bush plays clever at CPAC.   Hearing of a conservative plan to boo him and walk out on his talk, Bush’s campaign people packed the aisles with Bush supporters just as his talk go underway.

He was able to stand firm on his education and immigration positions.  You could certainly still hear the booing but it was quickly combatted with cheers.

The real winner at CPAC was Jeb Bush.  He walked into the lion’s den and not only walked out alive, but actually won supporters.  After listening to Bush, I would have no qualms supporting him. He is articulate, knowledgable and nuanced. The big intangible is whether he has the mental toughness and leadership skills.  I think he does. The fact that he was brave enough to walk into an adversarial environment and walk out with the respect of many who had vehemently disagreed with him speaks to the viability of his candidacy.

I’m convinced that the next president will be a Republican, so this is our chance to properly vet them out and pick the best of the lot. Right now, Walker has the support of the base and Bush has the fund raising advantage. Much will change between now and Nov 2016. It will be an interesting horse race.

I agree that Bush was a winner at CPAC.

He was able to increase his base support without having to say anything inflammatory or alter his positions on immigration or education.

That’s a win.   It shows that his strategy of “stay to the middle no matter what” has legs.   It will serve him well in the general if he gets the nomination.

Jeb wouldn’t be my first choice, but I would support him over many others, including all of the Democrats. I still worry that Jeb would fall into the go-along to get-along crowd in the mainstream. He does, however seem to be courageous, principled and strong-minded, so there is hope for him.  My personal first choice would be Ted Cruz, but I realize that the country hasn’t yet matured to the point of accepting the fact that Cruz has been right all along. There is definitely no issue with Cruz’s education or intellectual capacity.

If the GOP establishment idiots like McCain and McConnell hadn’t torpedoed Cruz, we may have gotten rid of Obamacare and the GOP would not be in its current defensive position over DHS funding. The way to deal with Democrat obtructionism is to adopt Harry Reid’s tactics against him. He did away with the filibuster, so why not use that to pass the bill without the illegal immigrant funding using a simple majority.  The Senate Republicans need to grow a pair. McDonnell et al were given a majority so that they could roll back Obama’s power grab.  So far they have shown themselves to be cowards.  This will hurt Jeb, because as frustration grows with the squishes, it will translate to more support for the purists.

[link=https://www.politico.com/news/2021/01/27/cpac-2021-462907]Politico[/link]
A top MAGA gathering finds life complicated after Trump
CPAC was at the top of its powers last year. Then Covid-19 hit, Trump lost, and the post-election chaos ensued. Now, the confab has some challenges ahead.

For decades, the Conservative Political Action Conference has been a staple of Republican politics. In recent years, the conservative confab has been the go-to stop for rising GOP stars, grassroots organizers and luminaries in the Trump movement.

Senior Trump adviser Jason Miller said that Trump, whose Mar-a-Lago abode is less than 2.5 hours away from the Orlando hotel where this years conference will occur on Feb. 25-28, is not currently scheduled to make an appearance. Meanwhile, a senior American Conservative Union official would not answer whether Vice President Mike Pence, who drew MAGA worlds ire for certifying Joe Bidens election, had been invited to speak at this years conference. A spokesperson for the former vice president did not respond to a request in time for publication.

ACU chairman Matt Schlapp said he is convinced this years conference will be no different from past years. CPAC is going great, he told POLITICO on Tuesday, before then saying that his quote needed to be attributed without his name. Schlapp did not address questions about why some sponsors were not continuing their CPAC sponsorship. But after those questions were posed and additional questions were sent to CPAC sponsors including whether the Jan. 6 Capitol riots impacted their thinking about sponsoring again this year ACU General Counsel David Safavian accused POLITICO of tortious interference with business relationships and attempting to cancel both CPAC and the American Conservative Union itself. The group then [link=https://twitter.com/ACUConservative/status/1354120506245599238?s=20]tweeted a copy of a letter[/link] from Safavian that included a litigation threat.

How well CPAC goes this year will provide one of the first public indications about the health of the MAGA movement with Trump out of office and with the Republican Party divided over just how loyal to the former president it should be.

I just… it’s just an odd design, and a hell of a coincidence.

This particular design was first used by the SS racial purity office and then (as of 2016) as the symbol of the American Nazis.

GOP talking points: We’re not the party of Nazis, white supremacists, country clubs, or elite universities.  We want freedom as yelled by Rafael.  We’re the party of the blue collar folks.

[/link]

Conference attendees repeatedly pointed to Trump as their top choice for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. But many also expressed a deepening interest in DeSantis, whom they see as an eventual successor to Trump and future presidential candidate, especially if Trump decides against another White House campaign.

The interest in DeSantis was clear on Thursday as droves of curious attendees filed into the main conference room ahead of his speech before promptly leaving after he had finished. At several points during his remarks, the crowd stood in applause. Just down the hall, a man held a sign emblazoned with DeSantisland.

Less than two months after the insurrection at the Capitol, the event was scarcely mentioned. Even after the deaths of a half million Americans during the pandemic, there was no sense that the GOP needed to re-think its values.

In fact, there was remarkably little focus on policy at all it was all culture war all the time. And, of course, Trump.

On the less conspiratorial side ….
CPAC goes to Orban’s Hungary
Americas most prominent conservative gathering, founded on ideals of personal liberty and limited government, convenes in Budapest next month to celebrate a European leader accused of undermining democracy and individual rights, [link=https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-conservative-conference-with-hungarys-hardline-leader-reflects-republican-2022-04-05/?utm_campaign=social-alert&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newslit]Reuters[/link] reports.

The May meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference is seen by some Republicans as a test of how closely American conservatives are willing align themselves with a global movement of far-right, Russia-friendly strongmen embraced by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

The events keynote speaker is Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a longtime supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A senior official on the Walker campaign confirmed that the aide shared the allegation with his supervisors at the time.

“I was made aware of the incident the morning after,” said the official, who described top campaign aides conferring on the matter and coming up with a plan to spare the aide from having to pick up Schlapp again.

Lawsuit filed ….

[link=https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redirect-to/?redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2023%2F01%2F17%2Fus%2Fpolitics%2Fmatt-schlapp-groping-accusation.html]Matt Schlapp Is Accused in Lawsuit of Groping Aide to Herschel Walkers Campaign – The New York Times (nytimes.com)[/link]

The lawsuit also accuses Mr. Schlapp and his wife, Mercedes Schlapp, who served as Mr. Trumps White House director of strategic communications, of defamation and conspiracy, claiming that they coordinated a campaign to discredit the Walker aide and his allegations.

The lawsuit argues that Ms. Schlapp defamed the Walker staff member by telling neighbors that he was a troubled individual who had been fired from previous jobs for lying and for making false statements on his résumé. The message was shared on a group text with neighbors, the plaintiff said.

The lawsuit says that the plaintiff had not been fired from a job for lying or for lying on his résumé.
CPAC Goers Ignore Matt Schlapps Assault Charges
In just over one month, the Conservative Political Action Coalition is set to hold a large gathering of influential Republicans at its annual conference near Washington, DC, [link=https://www.businessinsider.com/republicans-ignore-matt-schlapp-cpac-sexual-assault-lawsuit-2023-1]Insider[/link] reports.

Dozens of GOP members of Congress are likely to attend, if previous years offer any indication, and the conferences chief organizer American Conservative Union Chair Matt Schlapp has already begun to roll out scheduled speakers.
Thats despite Schlapp being the subject of a $9.4 million lawsuit: a man who worked as a mid-level staffer on Herschel Walkers Senate campaign has accused Schlapp of sexually assaulting him after a night of drinking in October.
Ron DeSantis said to Skip 2023 CPAC

DeSantis attended the last two conferences which were held in Florida.
According to a source, Gov. DeSantis (pictured speaking at the 2021 CPAC) was invited to attend and speak but appears to have a scheduling conflict with the event, which will be held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in Maryland March 1-4.
The source believes DeSantis is going to skip the conference, and wishes he would reconsider attending what is arguably the center of the conservative universe every year.
The [link=https://www.events.cpac.org/speakers]list of confirmed speakers[/link] , which includes Floridian Reps. Bryon Donalds, Kat Cammack, Greg Steube, Matt Gaetz, Senator Rick Scott, and Attorney General Ashley Moody, does not list [link=https://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/3865862-desantis-suggests-moving-federal-agencies-outside-dc/]Gov. It even includes former Ambassador Nikki Haley who recently announced her candidacy for the Oval Office.
