  • Sending DICOM over the Internet Securely

Posted by pdstahl_405 on July 25, 2020 at 4:06 pm

    Hi all,

I’m curious as to what methods have been used by companies to securely send DICOM over the “internet”.

I have a lot of small imaging clinics with a single modality and a poor IT setup that need to send to a central PACS server. IPSec VPN’s or similar are going to be troublesome.

Interested to hear what solutions others might have been able to come up with in the past.
    Cheers

    TT

    Good evening,

We have a Secure DICOM Routing solution. It has built in encryption to eliminate the need for cumbersome VPNs. Please take a look at our website at [link]http://www.gtrmedsoft.com[/link] and feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions.

    Kind Regards,

Call Tomas Garcia at Targa Development (754) 264-4616 [email protected]. His company has a really slick DICOM gateway/router that you can download onto a PC at the facility. It will encrypt, compress and persistently send the images over the internet to your PACS server. Its got lots of nice Admin features, configurations and is well supported. There are well over 1k of these things in the field today being used by some very large telerad companies.

    Good luck!!

Hey techtrain: I’ve run into this scenario several times. This solution is both free and easy to set up. Use Hamachi… [link]https://vpn.net/[/link]
Which is a free software vpn. You install it on each machine and your server. You will have your own secure vpn network with its own IP address scheme. You can send DICOM (or anything else) you want to any machine on your network. An added bonus is that you can Remote Desktop into any of your remote machines on the network. The method is free, and takes about 5 minutes to set up on each of your PCs/servers.

We don’t allow direct connections to/from our PACS.  We use Medicom to exchange DICOM data.

Medweb has been using encrypted DICOM and HL7 without the need for a VPN for 20+ years.
