Trump releases a lengthy statement trashing DeSantis, claiming he’s made “Florida…one of the least affordable states,” “raised taxes…$1.5 billion,” & one of the worst states to work, retire, raise kids, crime, rent, give birth, die, be a cop, teach, & pay energy bills

[link=https://twitter.com/NoahPollak/status/1649514364297433088]https://twitter.com/NoahP…us/1649514364297433088[/link]

Trump went from “Florida is great but DeSantis has nothing to do with it, it’s b/c of sunshine and beaches” to “Florida is a sh*thole and it’s all DeSantis’s fault” in like two weeks. Amazing.

Murdoch to the rescue …

New York Post:

[link=https://nypost.com/2023/04/23/trumps-insane-lies-on-desantis-trash-successful-conservative-policies/]https://nypost.com/2023/0…conservative-policies/[/link]
Trumps insane lies on DeSantis trash successful conservative policies
{Trump}, and the not-very-smart people around him, have decided that for him to win the primary he needs to not only destroy Floridas extremely popular Gov. Ron DeSantis (who has not yet even announced a presidential run), but also to demolish all of DeSantis conservative policies and practices that have been so wildly successful in the sunshine state.

All of this is a lie.

And Trump knows its a lie. By Friday night, Florida was no longer an apocalyptic hellscape and those sycophants who had spent the day agreeing with Trump that Florida is simply the worst were cut off at the legs.

DeSantis wins in Florida are celebrated because he has taken smart conservative policies and implemented them well to wild acclaim in what used to be a purple state but is, under his leadership, now reliably red. Its what winning looks like.

Donald Trump supporters need to ask themselves: How much of that are they willing to sacrifice to defend their guy? And why?

It’s always like the “woke dems, woke beers, woke wokers, woke librarians……are woke and woke dies in anti-woke capital of the anti-woke world in woke destroying Florida where woke gets crushed because we’re anti-woke”
Ron DeSantis is Elizabeth Warren
[link=https://plus.thebulwark.com/p/ron-desantis-has-an-elizabeth-warren-problem]Tim Miller[/link]: Both decided that they had to accede to every whim of their respective super-online activist bases rather than stick with what was working for them.

Warren tried simultaneously to attract the most strident Bernie bros by belatedly embracing Medicare for All (and other lefty issues) while also checking every box demanded by the identitarian wing of the resistance: putting pronouns in her Twitter bio, branding merch with Latinx, and attracting the support of a group of activists named Black Womxn For (without actually gaining any meaningful support from Black WomEn).

DeSantiss right-wing version has been much less earnest and well intentioned, but its just as out of touch. As a campaign prelude, Meatball Ron is presiding over a legislative session with a policy orientation more suited for Alabama than presidential battleground states. Hes tied himself to policies such as a six-week abortion ban and constitutional carry that even many Republicans dont support. On top of that, his current stump speech requires a Ph.D. in based online discourse to have any idea what hes talking about.
Ron DeTedious: DeSantis underwhelms Britains business chiefs
UK captains of industry lambast low-wattage US presidential hopeful.

One U.K. business figure said DeSantis looked bored and stared at his feet as he met with titans of British industry in an event co-hosted by Lloyds of London the [link=https://www.theguardian.com/business/2023/mar/23/lloyds-of-london-loss-ukraine-war-hurricane-ian]worlds largest insurance marketplace[/link].

He had been to five different countries in five days and he definitely looked spent, but his message wasnt presidential, they told POLITICO. He was horrendous.

A second business figure who was in the room said it was a low-wattage performance and that nobody in the room was left thinking, this mans going places.

They said: It felt really a bit like we were watching a state-level politician. I wouldnt be surprised if [people in attendance] came out thinking thats not the guy.

Ron DeSantis’ Old Debate Prep Videos Leak, Reveal Views on Trump
ABC News obtained the footage of the gubernatorial mock debate prep featuring Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz. In the clip, Gaetz asked then-Congressman DeSantis, “Is there any issue upon which you disagree with President Trump?”

DeSantis can be seen and heard letting out a heavy sigh immediately after then saying, “Obviously there is because I mean I voted contrary to him…I have to frame it in a way that’s not going to piss off all his voters.”

“Staffers who leak on the candidates they’ve done work for deserve the reputations they get,” Gaetz concluded.
DeSantis Pledges to Move Supreme Court to the Right
[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/05/22/desantis-supreme-court-christian-broadcasters-convention/]Washington Post[/link] –  Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis previewed more of his 2024 pitch Monday night with a new emphasis on the next presidents ability to push the Supreme Court further to the right, calling for new justices in the mold of Clarence Thomas and improvements to others such as Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., a Republican appointee who has sometimes sided with the courts liberal wing.

Said DeSantis: I think if you look over the next two presidential terms, there is a good chance that you could be called upon to seek replacements for Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito and the issue with that is, you cant really do better than those two.

He went on to say that, if you replace a Clarence Thomas with somebody like a Roberts or somebody like that, then youre gonna actually see the court move to the left, and you cant do that.

More: So it is possible that in those eight years, we have the opportunity to fortify justices Alito and Thomas as well as actually make improvements with those others, and if you were able to do that, you would have a 7-2 conservative majority on the Supreme Court that would last a quarter century.

this is interesting

Supposedly, the Trumpers in Florida state legislature are holding up a bill that they already voted on but was not yet signed by Desantis that would enable Desantis to stay on as governor if he decides to run for president

It does not become law until signed

Because some staffers moved out of his office on May 12 he had 15 days to declare his canidacy which means he has to declare by May27

Rumors are the legislature has elements controlled by Trump that  are keeping the Bill from getting to his desk to put him on the spot of having to resign as governor

Will be interesting to see how this plays out
Playbook: The Ron DeSantis reset
DeSANTIS D-DAY RON DeSANTIS had a plan. The 44-year-old Florida governor would use the momentum from his 19-point victory last November and turn the Florida legislative session into a showcase of conservative policymaking that would serve as the blueprint for a DeSantis presidential administration.
And he stuck to the plan. Aided by a Republican supermajority in Tallahassee, the governor signed into law a long list of conservative policies: universal school choice, an immigration bill that makes E-Verify mandatory for most Florida employers, a tort reform bill, a ban on the automatic deduction of union dues from the salaries of most state employees, an end to permits to carry a concealed firearm.

According to the national polling averages [link=https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/president-primary-r/2024/national/]tracked by FiveThirtyEight[/link], Trumps lead over DeSantis in national polling more than doubled, from 16 points in early March to 33 points today. Trump has also dominated the race for endorsements from party leaders, building a more than ten-to-one lead over DeSantis in the House alone.

So what happened? Unfortunately for DeSantis, Tallahassee policy victories dont define the narrative for the Republican presidential primary, which is more nationalized than ever. The stories that broke through during this period were all a net negative for the governor:   …. {Ukraine, Disney, Abortion }

[link=https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2023/05/ron-desantis-2024-republican-trump-campaign-announcement-strongman-who-isnt-dumb.html]Jonathan Chait[/link]: A little over a year ago, I wrote a long feature story on Ron DeSantis. Even at that early date, it was easy to discern his blueprint for wresting the Republican nomination from Donald Trumps hands. DeSantis was pitching himself to the partys base as a more competent and ruthless vehicle for their agenda
Everything I laid out in the piece about DeSantiss plan has turned out to be correct, except one: I thought it would work It still might work, of course. But the de facto rollout of DeSantiss campaign, in advance of the de jure announcement, has undeniably failed The main obstacle hes facing lies outside his control: Republicans simply love Trump.
But the fundamental bet DeSantis has made is that the breadth of his party, from its McConnell wing to its space-laser wing, is receptive to the idea of a strongman who isnt so dumb. No one else has stepped forward to supply that candidacy.
_______________
DeSantis Allies $200 Million Plan for Beating Trump
A key political group supporting Ron DeSantiss presidential run is preparing a $100 million voter-outreach push so big it plans to knock on the door of every possible DeSantis voter at least four times in New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina and five times in the kickoff Iowa caucuses, the [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/24/us/politics/ron-desantis-2024-super-pac.html]New York Times[/link] reports.
The effort is part of an on-the-ground organizing operation that intends to hire more than 2,600 field organizers by Labor Day, an extraordinary number of people for even the best-funded campaigns.
The group said it expected to have an overall budget of at least $200 million, including more than $80 million to be transferred from an old DeSantis state political account, for the daunting task of vaulting the Florida governor past former President Donald Trump, who has established himself as the dominant early front-runner.

Teagan Goddard: “Its worth noting that Jeb Bush [link=https://politicalwire.com/2016/02/20/jeb-bush-drops-out/]had a $150 million plan[/link] to beat Trump.”

What this is is…….. Florida Ron Desantis

He has spent 5-6 years with a team that has controlled the media and staged events at their convenience and to their hand-picked crowds

He has no real dissent or opposition

His awkwardness and lack of charisma is so obvious but it really has not yet got the national attention that it deserves because his staff has basically staged events for him with hand-picked crowds of people who were told when to cheer applaud laugh and smile

National stage is a different story and his handlers cant control every narrative

He is going to continue to flop………………  Then he is going to get angry…………..then that wont work and he will pout

I suppose.

But a campaign launch is a high scrutiny event.

And if a person accepts the notion that in order for DeSantis to become the nominee he has to convince a *very* big percentage of the non-Trump-cultist GOP primary base that he’s the guy, then this doesn’t help.   It may in fact do the opposite, and cause non-Trump high rollers to look to someone else, or at the very least, sit on their hands for a while to see if Meatball is worth their investment.
