[h1][b]Democrats Accuse Secret Service of Cover Up, Call for Testimony[/b][/h1]
Two influential House Democrats called on Monday for two officials at the Department of Homeland Securitys independent watchdog to testify to Congress about the agencys handling of missing Secret Service text messages from the day of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, accusing their office of engaging in a cover-up, the [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/01/us/politics/jan-6-secret-service-texts.html]New York Times[/link] reports.

It was the latest turn in a drama over what became of text messages sent and received by Secret Service agents around the time of the Capitol riot.

The conventional wisdom is that the cover up is often worse than the crime. But what if the crime is so bad such as seditious conspiracy against the United States of America that it somehow justified the cover up for those involved?

We learned today that text messages sent and received by top Pentagon officials on January 6 were [link=https://politicalwire.com/2022/08/02/text-messages-wiped-from-phones-of-trump-pentagon-officials/]wiped from their government-issued phones[/link]. The text messages from that day when a violent mob attempted to stop the counting of electoral votes at the U.S. Capitol were not preserved, and therefore could not be searched, according to court filings. This is in addition to the text messages deleted from the phones of key officials in the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security. And thats not to mention burning documents in the White House [link=https://politicalwire.com/2022/07/29/nothing-to-see-here/]and everything else[/link].

Its highly unlikely that any of this is a coincidence.[/QUOTE]

GOP hysteria over the Mar-a-Lago search is an invitation to violence[/h1]

In such a dangerous and unstable time, we need political and opinion leaders to appeal for calm. Instead, Fox News and other conservative outlets exploded with talk of [link=https://www.mediaite.com/tv/lara-trump-says-former-president-was-shocked-by-fbi-raid-this-should-shake-you-to-your-core/]war[/link] and [link=https://www.mediaite.com/tv/bernard-kerik-says-democrats-may-try-to-orchestrate-trumps-assassination-after-fbi-raid/]assassination[/link], an [link=https://www.mediaite.com/tv/mark-levin-declares-fbi-raid-on-mar-a-lago-the-worst-attack-on-this-republic-in-modern-history/]attack[/link] on the country and Trump supporters, and calls for revenge against a corrupt American KGB. Elected Republicans erupted in cries about the [link=https://twitter.com/GOPLeader/status/1556807790433271809]weaponized politicization[/link] done by a Democratic Gestapo and a [link=https://twitter.com/RepMTG/status/1556984844072140802]tyrannical FBI[/link], and about the need to [link=https://twitter.com/laurenboebert/status/1556845893332205569]make sure these tyrants pay the price[/link]. We know that violent speech, particularly when so many are already feeling desperate and on edge, leads to violent acts. We have been here before.

Responsible media and political figures would, at the very least, counsel people to wait until all the facts about the Mar-a-Lago search are known. Instead, Republican officials encouraged hysteria. House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy [link=https://twitter.com/GOPLeader/status/1556807790433271809]accused [/link]the Justice Department of an intolerable state of weaponized politicization. Florida Gov. These are open invitations to the violent and the unstable to take matters into their own hands.

    [b]Extremists Threatening the Trump Search-Warrant Judge[/b][/h1]
Far-right extremists on pro-Donald Trump message boards and social networks are making violent, antisemitic threats against the judge who reportedly signed the warrant that allowed the FBI to search the former presidents Mar-a-Lago property in Florida, [link=https://www.vice.com/en/article/dy73pk/fbi-warrant-judge-reinhart-doxxed]Vice News[/link] reports.

[h1][b]Trumps Effort to Impugn the FBI Worked[/b][/h1] [link=https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redirect-to/?redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Fpolitics%2F2022%2F08%2F10%2Ftrump-fbi-search-republicans%2F%3Futm_source%3Drss%26utm_medium%3Dreferral%26utm_campaign%3Dwp_politics]Philip Bump[/link]: The first minutes after Donald Trump announced that his Florida estate had been searched by FBI agents went better than the former president could have imagined. His years-long effort to cast the bureau as inherently biased against him quickly prompted even Trump-skeptical Republicans to side with him against the devious Deep State. The wagon-circling reportedly pleased Trump, whose team saw a new breath of unity with Trump as its focus.

That this reaction was based on claims of political bias within the FBI that have no basis in the available evidence was beside the point. The point was that the FBI became the opposition, just as Trump would have hoped.

But it turns out that this wasnt enough. Baseless assertions of impropriety and bias by the FBI have now been kicked up a notch with multiple figures on the right claiming again without evidence, much less justification that maybe the feds planted evidence as they combed through Mar-a-Lago. Because, it seems, any opponent of Trumps must be cast in the most nefarious terms possible.

The released affidavit suggests that the government doesn’t pay much attention to the defendants self serving statement that he declassified all those documents back when he was still president. They put his lawyers hand waving letter in the appendix without even commenting on it in the (unredacted portion of the) affidavit.

A New Mexico judge has ordered ‘Cowboys for Trump’ leader Couy Griffin removed from office as a county commissioner over his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Judge Francis Matthew rules Griffin is barred from public office under the 14th Amendment’s disqualification clause.

This is the first time in 100+ years a court has disqualified a public official for participating in an insurrection.
