  • Program allocated time off during Christmas and New Years weeks?

Posted by jemendez on December 15, 2020 at 10:03 am

Hi fellow residents. Univ of Wisconsin has a program where the staff and fellows work the week of new years and Christmas while the residents have the 2 weeks off, according to my APD who is an alum. I’d like to know if anyone else’s program provides similar time off for the holidays. We’re looking into doing something similar here in SAUSHEC since the volume is down scheduled for the weeks anyway.
    Thanks! [;)]

2 weeks ? Seems a little crazy especially when travel should be discouraged. I think half the residency on and half off one week would be more realistic. Or just let people use as vacation as is and have a generous amount for people who dont celebrate these holidays

At our California program each resident is guaranteed 1 week off during the 4 weeks around the holidays (starting the week before Christmas and ending the 1 week following New Years). Seniority and daily conference attendance dictates which residents get their first requests for a specific week (ie Christmas week vs. New Years week etc). This week counts toward our 4 weeks of vacation allotted for the academic year.

Each resident gets to pick one week off between Thanksgiving, xmas, ny. They are then given out by seniority.

2 weeks off? Radiology residents already dont work a lot. Radiology is one of the few fields where attendings work harder than residents.

Never heard of 2 weeks off at the holidays for the residents. While that’s a nice perk that’s kinda ridiculous.

Does that count against their yearly vacation?
