9th vote is a fail, no surpassing the number of ballots needed in 1923. You have to go to the lead up to the Civil War to find this level of dysfunction.

McCarthy loses round 11 …

[link=https://punchbowl.news/why-premium?premium_content]Punchbowl News[/link]:Allies of Kevin McCarthy have struck a tentative agreement with his conservative opponents. A draft of the prospective deal is being circulated this evening. Those involved in the negotiations say it will either convince McCarthys conservative opponents to support him or the California Republicans candidacy will be further endangered.
A major showdown could come later tonight or tomorrow, after 11 rounds of voting has led to no breakthrough for McCarthy. Republicans have no plan at the moment to recess for the night.

So all he has to do is let the insane run the asylum. Good plan.

Ranked choice voting would come in handy.

The Tipping Point

As House Republicans enter the fourth day of this internecine struggle, the GOP leaderships plans seemingly change at a moments notice. One minute theyre going to move to adjourn, the next, theyre ready to start another round of voting. At times it seems like significant progress is being made, only for that to turn out to be a mirage.

Yet GOP leaders now believe theyre reaching a tipping point. Either a large bloc of McCarthys 20 conservative opponents moves in his direction following yet another round of negotiations or McCarthys quest to become speaker may have stalled out permanently.

This is new: McCarthy insists he doesnt anticipate adjourning the House for any significant period of time i.e. the weekend until the speakers race is wrapped up However, there are those around McCarthy who believe that he needs to wrap this up today or else his speaker bid is mortally wounded.
The Dangerous Weakness of Speaker McCarthy
[link=https://messagebox.substack.com/p/the-dangerous-weakness-of-speaker?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=65026&post_id=94921940&isFreemail=true&utm_medium=email]Dan Pfeiffer[/link]: To buy off the votes of the opposition, McCarthy relinquished all the power and authority of the office. There appears to be nothing he is unwilling to sacrifice for the title of Speaker.

Kevin McCarthy begins his tenure as the weakest legislative leader in American history. He is a national joke. Democrats myself very much included enjoyed our laughs at Kevin McCarthys expense this past week. And we will laugh again when he cant do the basics of his job. But we should be aware that a weak Speaker leading a fractured caucus is not really funny. Its actually quite dangerous. Enjoy the laughs because sh*t will get real before too long.

Kevins a piece of sh(t. And lets just be honest about this, because he will say whatever he needs to say to stay in power. Im not even saying that gratuitously to be mean to him. Its just a fact.

He’s not lying.  He gave up his power just to keep a title.  Weak lil’ Qevin.

It’s pretty funny watching them claim all these bills they’re passing as victories.  In reality the senate is going to d!ck slap you in the forehead.
Kevin McCarthy Feels the Vern
Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) exploded after losing Ways & Means to a McCarthy ally, fueling anxiety that he could retire out of piqueand that McCarthys favor trading has eroded his narrow margin of support, [link=https://puck.news/feeling-the-vern/]Puck[/link] reports.

Just how angry was he? Well, a source on the House floor during the vote told me that while McCarthy was gaveling down the votes, Buchanan walked up to McCarthy and said, You f*cked me, I know it was you, you whipped against me.

He then proceeded to chew out McCarthys deputy chief of staff for floor operations, John Leganski. It was shocking to see such fury from Buchanan, whos known for being mild mannered. Indeed, I heard that the tirade was so heated that the Speakers security detail stepped in with a light touch.

Hakeem Jeffries asks McCarthy to put Schiff and Swalwell on their House Committees.

This action {to remove Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar from their committees} was taken by both Democrats and Republicans given the seriousness of the conduct involved, particularly in the aftermath of a violent insurrection and attack on the Capitol. It does not serve as precedent or justification for the removal of Representatives Schiff and Swalwell, given that they have never exhibited violent thoughts or behavior.

At the same time that Republicans have threatened to deny seats on the Intelligence Committee to clearly qualified Democratic members, serial fraudster George Santos has been placed on two standing committees of the House and welcomed into your conference. The apparent double standard risks undermining the spirit of bipartisan cooperation that is so desperately needed in Congress.

Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-IL) [link=https://twitter.com/AndrewSolender/status/1617918472729812992]slammed[/link] Speaker Kevin McCarthys (R-CA) plan to strip some Democrats committee seats.

Said Spartz: As I spoke against it on the House floor two years ago, I will not support this charade again.

She added that McCarthy needs to stop bread and circuses in Congress and start governing for a change.
McCarthys Biggest Victory Comes with a Political Price
[link=https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4032530-mccarthys-biggest-victory-yet-comes-with-political-price/]The Hill[/link]:  Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) may have proven his bipartisan negotiating chops by steering a debt ceiling increase through a severely divided Congress, but it came with a price.

Members of the hard-line House Freedom Caucus and their allies are lashing out at the deal, saying it does not include steep enough spending cuts and that McCarthy should not have accepted suspending the debt ceiling beyond the 2024 presidential election, a key demand of President Biden.

or a bit more raw …

[link=https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4110686-gop-mccarthy-on-collision-course-over-expunging-trumps-impeachments/]GOP, McCarthy on collision course over expunging Trumps impeachments

[/link]

House Republicans increasingly find themselves on a collision course over efforts to expunge the impeachments of former President Trump, a battle that pits hard-line conservatives who are pressing for a vote against moderates already warning GOP leaders theyll reject it.

The promised opposition from centrist Republicans all but ensures the resolutions would fail if they hit the floor. And it puts Speaker [link=https://thehill.com/people/kevin-mccarthy/]Kevin McCarthy [/link](R-Calif.) in a no-win situation.

If he doesnt stage the vote, he risks the ire of Trump and his allies. If he does, the measures would be shot down, validating Trumps impeachments just as his legal troubles are piling up.
“These people look pathetic….. Kevin is playing politics. It is not even clear if he constitutionally can expunge those things.  If he wants to put his members on the spot, his members in difficult races on spot, that is a decision he has to make. But this is not responsible.

~ Nancy Pelosi
