• Kevin McCarthy (GOP House Leader)
Biden Still Hasnt Spoken to Kevin McCarthy
President Biden still hasnt spoken to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy since taking office and its beginning to get under the skin of the usually affable California Republican, [link=https://thehill.com/homenews/house/548470-biden-snubs-mccarthy]The Hill[/link] reports.

Said McCarthy: Just as Ive sat down with President Trump, Id like to sit down with President Biden. Ive actually requested meetings on the border crisis. Never had a meeting, never spoken to President Biden since hes been elected A number of times Ive requested the meetings, hes never even acknowledged them.

(Could it be because McCarthy tried to overturn the results of the election?)

Worse yet, if he gets to ride in Air Force 1 he’ll likely get Newt’s seat in the back of the plane, the primary cause for Newt’s blowing up Congress in the 1990’s.

Kevin McCarthy says he rented a room from ‘friend’ Frank Luntz in a 7,000-square-foot penthouse
Its a 7,000-square-foot space a combination of four penthouse apartments with what appear to be homeowners association (HOA) fees of nearly $5,000 per month.

In August and September of 2018, Luntz purchased four adjoining penthouse units in the Clara Barton building in Penn Quarter for a total of almost $4.3 million. Combined, the units totaled 6,960 square feet and had 12 bedrooms, 12 full bathrooms and four half-baths. The HOA fees alone on the units are $4,976 per month, according to Redfin.com.

McCarthys spokesman did not respond to requests for comment, including a request for the fair market rate paid by McCarthy. Luntz also did not respond to a request for comment.

Totally above board.  [image]https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif[/image] Luntz gives a below market rate “room” in a huge penthouse to his “friend” McCarthy ….  McCarthy has his PAC pay Luntz $40,000
McCarthys PAC Made Payments to Luntzs Firm
Federal Election Commission filings show that the leadership PAC controlled by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy Majority Committee PAC, or McPAC paid one of GOP pollster Frank Luntzs companies nearly $40,000 in late 2020, just before McCarthy began renting what he described as a room in the recently renovated apartment, the [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/05/15/mccarthy-leadership-pac-made-payments-luntz-firm/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=wp_politics]Washington Post[/link] reports.

The Jellyfish Leadership of Kevin McCarthy
[link=https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/23/opinion/kevin-mccarthy-trump-republicans.html]Michelle Cottle[/link]: Some in the GOP conference are asking: What kind of leader dispatches one of his troops to make a deal, then abandons and humiliates him over a bill thats going to pass anyway? The most obvious answer: a pathetic one.
Such harsh assessments are unfair though not because they are inaccurate. Mr. McCarthy has long done whatever it takes to get what he wants. And what he really, really wants now is the speakers gavel, which hovers just a few precious seats beyond his grasp. If Mitch McConnell, the ruthless, calculating Senate Republican leader, is a shark, Mr. McCarthy is a jellyfish, carried spinelessly along by the political currents.

But these days, such inchoate non-leadership is the best that House Republicans can hope for. In fact, thats what they demand.

Kevin McCarthy Made a Series of Bad Choices
[link=https://email.punchbowl.news/t/ViewEmail/t/DAFA3A78B24641702540EF23F30FEDED/F0FBF4A26141BC72E89F0E32AAFB68BF]Punchbowl News[/link]: McCarthy initially objected in February to the number of GOP and Democratic seats on the proposed panel, and on how subpoenas would be issued, Pelosi agreed to his suggestions, only to have McCarthy change his position and raise a completely different objection over the scope of the investigation.

When Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), chair of the Homeland Security Committee, cut a deal in mid-May with GOP Rep. John Katko (R-NY), ranking member on Homeland, over legislation to create a bipartisan commission, McCarthy ended up publicly repudiating the agreement his own member made. Thirty-five House Republicans voted for the bill anyway, only to see it blocked by Senate Republicans.

And now with Cheney on the select committee, Pelosi has once more forced McCarthy into a tough situation. Compared to the proposal that Thompson and Katko hashed out or the compromise floated by Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) the select committee approved by the House is bad format for McCarthy and the Republicans. Theres no time limit on the investigation, Republicans have no say in who or how many subpoenas can be issued and Pelosi has a veto over McCarthys appointments.

It’s real simple…
1. Kevin wants to me Joe during his nap time and the first lady say’s No.
2. He’s ran out of prevagen and can’t remember Kevins name or position.
3. He needs to clear the meeting Kamal, after she clears it with Nancy.
4. He’s the slowest; most incompetent leader I have have every watched. It’s a total embarassment when he speaks. Mouth opens and incoherent rants come up.

Yeah, I’m back. I actually gave him time to settle in and really attempt to like him. I don’t like Cads and fraudsters. He’s selling America short and kissing the rest of the Worlds Butt. So I’ll use some the phrase you lefties said when Trump was in office. “He ain’t my President; We should invoke the 25th Amendment; his family is corrupt; he’s a racist; he’s an opportunist from others work; he’s creepy”

What happened to your party? You need another Kennedy or dear even a Bill Clinton. What a total F-up

McCarthys Gift to Pelosi
[link=https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2021/07/22/return-of-the-masks-493689?nname=playbook&nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&nrid=0000014e-f0ed-dd93-ad7f-f8edad790000&nlid=630318]Playbook[/link]: If Pelosi gave McCarthy a gift for his own base Wednesday, McCarthy handed the speaker one in return for hers: His announcement that he would withdraw all his members from the panel unless she reverses course is exactly what a lot of Democrats were hoping for.

Now, Democrats (plus Rep. Liz Cheney) can subpoena whomever they want, whenever they want, without any protest. If they decide to have closed-door depositions with Trump White House officials, the former president will have no spies in the room to report back. And the public hearings will be free of GOP complaints. In that regard, perhaps, Pelosi may say the move was worth it.

[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/07/21/how-kevin-mccarthy-is-boosting-integrity-jan-6-investigation/]Plum Line[/link]: By pulling out, McCarthy has boosted the committees legitimacy and credibility immeasurably. The less involved McCarthy is with this committee, the more likely it will be to undertake a genuine and comprehensive accounting.

So McCarthy is upset that the district attorney doesn’t want any accomplices to the crime to sit on the grand jury.

While I don’t give McCarthy much credit for being a political genius, I can see a fairly simple political calculus.

1) He wants to be Speaker of the House
2) He is current minority leader.
3) He is the most likely Republican to become Speaker if the Republicans re-take the House
4) The 2 things that would prevent him from becoming Speaker are a) the Republicans failing to take the House or b) loss of support from the pro-Trump GOP House caucus.
5) Most of his GOP caucus are in very safe Red districts
6) He looks at the coming 2022 mid-terms and figures that Republicans have a really good shot at the House just based on redistricting and normal out-party gains in midterms. He probably figures he can maybe even lose a couple swing seats and *still* get the House.

Therefore, his calculus is that his best path to becoming Speaker is to be a pro-Trump as possible from now until Jan 2023. That includes “fighting” Pelosi and the January 6th inquiry, even if it costs the GOP national brand some long-term support and even if it dents the GOP appeal for important Senate races.

I think the problem is that if (or probably when) they retake the house he might get Trumped.  I think the crazy Q stuff is what the GOP is all about.  So what if some of those names like Gohmert, Gozar, MGT are like we want Trump to be speaker.  That actually does seem plausible to me as the speaker doesn’t need to be a member.
Freedom Caucus Pushes McCarthy to Oust Pelosi
[link=https://www.politico.com/news/2021/07/23/house-freedom-caucus-mccarthy-remove-pelosi-500647]Politico[/link]: In a [link=https://twitter.com/freedomcaucus/status/1418588717506236418]letter[/link] Friday, the far-right group asked McCarthy to file and bring up a privileged motion by July 31 to vacate the chair and end Nancy Pelosis authoritarian reign as Speaker of the House.

The motion is all but guaranteed to fail in the Democratic House, but it signals a stewing anger on the right towards the speaker. The Freedom Caucus letter indicates that McCarthy would need to initiate the motion, and if he were to do so, it would further escalate partisan acrimony in the House that has remained high, and occasionally gotten personal, since Jan. 6.
Kevin McCarthy Should Prepare for Trumps Wrath as Pelosi’s Committee Debuts
For the first time across dozens of high-profile Trump-related oversight hearings, Republican leadership and allies will have no voice on the panel. (Its going to be weird for us Hill watchers who are used to Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) lobbing procedural grenades into proceedings to start fights.

McCarthys rather abrupt decision last week to pull his members from the Jan. 6 committee means that Democrats and their two GOP allies on this issue, Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger will have free rein to set the narrative. (This is why several folks on McCarthys own leadership team thought that pulling out was a bad idea.)

But ask yourself this: Do you think McCarthys complaints about Pelosi will mollify Donald Trump when he turns on his TV and sees no Republicans on the dais defending him?

[link=https://email.punchbowl.news/t/ViewEmail/t/DF5C4F9ECDBFEC542540EF23F30FEDED/F0FBF4A26141BC72E89F0E32AAFB68BF]Punchbowl News[/link]: Oh, and by the way, Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz, Paul Gosar and Louie Gohmert, will hold a news conference outside the Justice Department on Tuesday to complain about the treatment of alleged rioters arrested for their role in the Jan. 6 attack. Talk about mixed or non-existent messaging.

Kevin McCarthy Asked to Preserve Phone Records
The select panel investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection has asked for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthys phone records to be preserved as it expands its inquiry, [link=https://www.politico.com/news/2021/09/02/kevin-mccarthy-phone-records-january-6-investigators-509199]Politico[/link] reports.

McCarthys name was included in a broad request the select panel sent Monday to social media platforms and telecommunications companies, asking them to preserve records that could be relevant to the probe of the attack.

In a joint statement Saturday, committee chairman Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.) and vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) criticized a [link=https://www.kget.com/news/politics/rep-kevin-mccarthy-discusses-afghanistan-capitol-riot-probe/]Thursday interview by McCarthy[/link], in which he said the FBI had concluded Trump had no involvement in the insurrection.

Minority Leader McCarthy has suggested, based on an anonymous report, that the Department of Justice has concluded that Donald Trump did not cause, incite, or provoke the violence on Jan. 6, Thompson and Cheney stated Saturday, adding that when the report was first published, the select committee queried executive branch agencies and committees involved in that investigation.

What he’s done is embrace Donald Trump. And if I were doing what he’s doing, I would be deeply ashamed of myself. I don’t know how you explain that to your children.
“There’s a difference between somebody who voted for Donald Trump and being the Republican leader after an insurrection, and setting all of that aside and going to Mar-a-Lago, and rehabilitating him, bringing him back in. That to me is unforgivable.

There are a lot of people that feel this way. Plenty to turn the tide towards either party in a general election. The question remains if there are enough to turn the tide in a primary. At this point probably not.

Greene Lists Her Demands for Kevin McCarthy
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) laid out demands for Kevin McCarthy if he hopes to win her support for speaker on Rep. Matt Gaetzs (R-FL) [link=https://rumble.com/vps8x9-episode-17-stand-your-ground-feat.-rep.-marjorie-taylor-greene-firebrand-wi.html]podcast[/link], [link=https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2021/11/25/a-dave-chappelle-thanksgiving-special-495228?nname=playbook&nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&nrid=0000014e-f0ed-dd93-ad7f-f8edad790000&nlid=630318]Politico[/link] reports.

First she wants Rep. Adam Kinzinger get (R-IL), who is retiring, and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) to be kicked out of the GOP Conference and effectively booted from their committee posts. Next, she wants the other 11 Republicans who voted for impeachment stripped of their leadership positions on committees.

Said Greene: Do you know the excuse I was given about why we cant remove them from the conference? Oh, but Marjorie, well lose committee seats. Our conference will lose committee seats. Well guess what? I lost two committees Paul Gosar lost a committee seat. I dont see why we cant kick these two Republicans out of our conference.
Ex-Staffer Slams Kevin McCarthy
Kevin OToole, a former staffer for House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, unleashed fierce criticism of his onetime boss in a [link=https://twitter.com/theleadcnn/status/1479238347415601154?s=10]CNN interview[/link].

Said OToole: His leadership strategy is dictated by the most extreme wings of his party. And so, when Marjorie Taylor Green or Matt Gaetz put their thumb on the scale, thats what he responds to. And that drives the House Republican Conference into the arms of somebody like Donald Trump The leadership that enables that behavior is continuing today, as weve seen.

[link=https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2022/01/07/biden-finds-a-new-manchin-whisperer-495636?nname=playbook&nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&nrid=0000014e-f0ed-dd93-ad7f-f8edad790000&nlid=630318]Playbook[/link]: Its a fascinating interview. Staffers rarely speak out like this against sitting lawmakers, let alone leadership. Thats especially the case when, like OToole who is now a staffer for Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) they still work on the Hill.
