new audio out of a radio interview that Kevin McCarthy gave soon after 1/6. In it, he says he spoke to Trump after the Capitol riot and Trump admitted that he did bear some responsibility. In the same interview, McCarthy states very strongly that there should be a bipartisan commission set up to investigate what happened and find out exactly who bears responsibility.

[h1][b]McCarthy Would Boot Schiff from Intelligence Panel[/b][/h1]
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said Republicans would boot House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff (D-CA) from the committee altogether if they attained the majority in the midterms, [link=https://thehill.com/homenews/house/598768-gop-leader-says-republicans-will-boot-schiff-from-intel-panel]The Hill[/link] reports.
Said McCarthy: You cannot make this committee political, you cannot use it as a position of chairman to lie, and you should be focused on what the American people want you to be focused on around the world.

It’s rare … but a real audio recording show that McCarthy’s public statements pretty much polar opposite of what he really wanted in private.
[link=https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2022/04/22/is-kevin-mccarthy-toast-00027137?nname=playbook&nid=0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000&nrid=0000014e-f0ed-dd93-ad7f-f8edad790000&nlid=630318]Playbook[/link]: For years now, through controversy after controversy, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has bent over backward to stay in former President Donald Trumps good graces, all to serve one major purpose: He wants to be speaker someday.
That hope may have just blown up on the launchpad.
On Thursday night, NYTs Jonathan Martin and Alex Burns delivered an absolute stunner of a scoop: an [link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhbSLdAO3Do]audio recording[/link] of a phone call on Jan. 10, 2021, in which McCarthy is heard clearly and unambiguously saying that Trump should resign.
What happens on the tape: McCarthy essentially conspires with Rep. LIZ CHENEY (R-Wyo.) about how to get Trump to step down as president after the Jan. 6 insurrection. On the call, Cheney now Trumps Enemy No. 1, but at the time, the House GOPs No. 3 leader asks McCarthy if Trump is going to resign. McCarthy responds: I mean, you guys all know him, too do you think hed ever back away? But what I think Im going to do is Im going to call him The only discussion I would have with him is that I think this [impeachment resolution] will pass and it would be my recommendation you should resign.

Rick Wilson rant—
[link=https://twitter.com/TheRickWilson/status/1517341920019812358]https://twitter.com/TheRi…us/1517341920019812358[/link]1/ Let’s drill down a little deeper on the doom [link=https://twitter.com/GOPLeader]{[/link]Kevin McCarthy} has brought upon himself tonight. It’s a lesson about his character, and that of today’s Republican Party….
First, Kevin has long postured himself to donors –……that Kevin’s pitch to these six- and seven-figure types was simple: “You need me as Leader so I can fight off the Trump Wing of the GOP.”The desperate tribalism, the irrational fear of “Trump or Full Sharia Gay Marriage Trans Communism” infects them. They want to believe Kevin, and as a king of frat-bro backslapping, he smells like their kind.
He’s done this repreatedly; piss on Trump privately, grovel in public. But [link=https://twitter.com/GOPLeader]{[/link]Kevin McCarthy} is something else. He’s a coward. Like so many of the GOP who still cling to the illusion that they run the show, his rank fear clings to him like the corpse-funk in Bannon’s basement.
…
Since January 6th, Kevin has lived on borrowed time. Trump’s pattern is to demand, humiliate, pretend to accept the apology of his sycophants, and repeat. The majority of the GOP caucus are already nihilist Trumphadis. In just two cycles, Fall of the House of Kevin was inevitable. After November, the GOP Caucus will look even more like Gaetz, Gosar, Greene, and the rest of the mutant parade. Jim Jordan bided his time, and now will be the clear frontrunner for Leader. Kevin is from the Before. He lacks purity.
…Sure, he’ll keep lying to corporate donors, and they’ll keep giving, but they’re funding the freight train of loons running this year. They’re funding people who aren’t pro-business or free-market conservatives. Kevin won’t give them the 2023 agenda they want.
Jim Jordan will give them Impeachmentpalooza (they GET the spectacle), and legislation to punish businesses who won’t bend the knee. (cf Ron DeSantis) Expect show trials for CRT, BLM, LGBT, voter fraud, groooooomers, and the rest of their catalog of imaginary demons.
…
“Nationalist populism” is a code for “authoritarian statism.” Every corporate dollar invested with Kevin now is a contingent joke, a phantasm. All these whale GOP donors — we’ll post a list — are writing checks for a Congress Kevin can’t deliver.
The good news for Kevin is that I hear Truth Social is looking for a new CEO…

[h1]Trump Says McCarthy Relationship Not Damaged[/h1]
Former President Donald Trump said Friday evening his relationship with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy remains good, after a recording emerged of Mr. McCarthy telling other top GOP lawmakers that he would advise Mr. Trump to resign, several days after rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, the [link=https://www.wsj.com/articles/mccarthy-said-he-would-advise-trump-to-resign-after-jan-6-riot-tape-shows-11650637401]Wall Street Journal[/link] reports.
Said Trump: He made a call. I heard the call. I didnt like the call. But almost immediately as you know, because he came here and we took a picture right thereyou know, the support was very strong.
He added: I think its all a big compliment, frankly. They realized they were wrong and supported me._______
Like Rick Wilson said, “Trump’s pattern is to demand, humiliate, pretend to accept the apology of his sycophants, and repeat. ”

Oh Lordy, there are tapes ..
An audio recording shows that House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) feared in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack that several far-right members of Congress would incite violence against other lawmakers, identifying several by name as security risks in private conversations with party leaders, the New York Times reports.
Mr. McCarthy talked to other congressional Republicans about wanting to rein in multiple hard-liners who were deeply involved in Donald Trumps efforts to contest the 2020 election and undermine the peaceful transfer of power.
McCarthy referred chiefly to two representatives, Matt Gaetz of Florida and Mo Brooks of Alabama, as endangering the security of other lawmakers and the Capitol complex.

In the Republican party, negative partisanship, opposing liberals/Democrats as the primary goal, trumps everything. It Trump lies, ethics, morality.
*If* he’s toast, he’s toast from the *inside* because some other Trump sycophant (I’m looking at you Elise Stefanik) convinces the crazies that they’d be the better banner man-
she’s completely down the Trump drain. It’s interesting to watch how things are unfolding. Seems all the speculation is Elise dumped these tapes. In real time we’re watching the party knife each other in the back. And Elise seems like she’ll knife anyone to get to the top.

Which generates more optimism for me.

Forgive me. Im not as well versed in civics as many here. Is there anything binding McCarthy to these concessions hes making? Is it just his word? The one that bothers me the most is no debt raising the debt ceiling without spending decreases. What does that even mean? What power would the wounded speaker have to keep a few moderate Republicans to vote with the Dems just like they did recently?
The other stuff will just make the Republicans look stupid and cause the crazies to cost more seats in the next election. I have no problem with that. Leaning in.

Some is binding, other things not. Some of it will be adopted in the House rules package… which would then be binding unless changed.
Some is just his word and he could go back on it.
BUT … it sounds like he is going to allow any single member to make a motion to vacate the chair … so if they get angry and don’t think he’s holding up his end of the deal, they go to the floor, move to vacate, and we’re right back here where we started again.

The Speaker of the House holds the ability to decide whether or not to bring legislation to the floor. He can block it regardless of whether or not there is majority support.-
So if there is bipartisan support for something like a debt ceiling raise there is nothing stopping him from bringing it the floor even if he promised not to?

edit — under proposed rules looks like that would likelt be a no

CUT-AS-YOU-GO.In rule XXI, amend 9 clause 10 to read as follows: 10 10.(a)(1) Except as provided in paragraphs (b) and 11 (c), it shall not be in order to consider a bill or joint reso12 lution, or an amendment thereto or a conference report 13 thereon, if the provisions of such measure have the net 14 effect of increasing mandatory spending for the period of 15 either 16 (A) the current year, the budget year, and the 17 four fiscal years following that budget year; or 18 (B) the current year, the budget year, and the 19 nine fiscal years following that budget year.

So if the speaker cut a deal in which any spending increased and tried to bring it to the floor he would be out of order.-
Tony Gonzales (moderate from Texas) already a no on the proposed rules package.

These moderates who have to run in Biden districts in 2024 know that a shut down, a default, or even a market-destabilizing flirt with default likely costs them their seats.

[h1][b]McCarthy Demanded Inquiry Into Capitol Riot[/b][/h1]

Said McCarthy: We cannot just sweep this under the rug. We need to know why it happened, who did it and people need to be held accountable for it. And Im committed to make sure that happens.
In the weeks after the riot, McCarthy completely reversed his position.

[link=https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/jan-6-probe-kevin-mccarthys-strategy-no-favors-rcna32746]Kevin McCarthys Jan 6 Committee strategy did him no favors
[/link]
In April and May of last year, for example, the House GOP leader dispatched a trusted ally, New York Rep. John Katko, to negotiate the terms of an independent commission to examine the Jan. 6 attack. As regular readers [link=https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/when-republicans-refuse-take-yes-answer-n1267901]may recall[/link], McCarthy made sure to include unreasonable demands he expected Democrats to reject.
When Democrats agreed to Republicans terms anyway, McCarthy refused to take yes for an answer and [link=https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/when-republicans-refuse-take-yes-answer-n1267901]rejected the compromise hed asked for[/link].…
At that point, lawmakers moved on to Plan B: Theyd create a bipartisan, special select committee to uncover the facts that McCarthy said he was eager to learn. As weve [link=https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/jan-6-probe-gop-leaders-left-dark-rcna23893]discussed[/link], as part of the process, GOP leaders were invited to recommend a slate of House Republicans to serve on the panel, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had the final call on whether or not they qualified.
McCarthy picked five members, [link=https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/pelosi-rejects-two-gop-picks-jan-6-investigatory-committee-n1274637]two of whom were rejected[/link] for being anti-election radicals, though Pelosi was willing to accept the other three Republicans chosen for the panel. Outraged, GOP leaders quickly announced a boycott of the committee.
As the panel prepares for its [link=https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/jan-6-committee-sets-stage-historic-presentation-rcna32600]primetime hearing this evening[/link], its worth pausing to acknowledge that McCarthys strategy, from his own perspective, was a failure.
…McCarthys decision has left the rest of the Republican conference completely in the dark. Ahead of tonights hearing, the GOP doesnt know what the committee has, cant prepare competent defenses for Trump, cant influence the direction of the investigation, cant ask contrary questions during public or private proceedings, cant leak anything, and cant dilute the panels findings in advance of a final report thats expected in September.
…
McCarthy seemed to believe he was punishing House Democrats last year when he refused to participate in the process he previously supported. If hed only thought ahead a bit more, the would-be House Speaker wouldve realized he was doing far more harm to his own interests.

Listening to an interview with [i]Bulwark[/i] founder Charlie Sykes this morning
{paraphrase}
McCarthy has committed an act of political malpractice. Trump’s attack on McCarthy (and ask for ‘equal time’) are very under-covered stories because they show that Trump is bothered by what he is seeing. This is Trump’s turf. He knows television and he knows that McCarthy’s decisions have handed the Democrats dozens of hours of primetime friendly broadcasting… and there is no organized Republican defense or response.

Ill search for that interview. Trump/McCarthy screw ups are pleasing to my ear.

[h1][b]Kevin McCarthy, Have You No Sense of Decency?[/b][/h1] [link=https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/06/january-6-hearings-liz-cheney-trump-cover-up/661421/]David Frum[/link]: The Republicans do not have to be the cover-up party. Thats a choice. In fact, the story of the hearings has been the courage and integrity of many individual Republicans, culminating most spectacularly with the heroic testimony of the former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson. But as an institution, the party has to date made a pro-Trump cover-up its policy.
This policy of protecting the ex-president involves excusing the worst political crime in the history of the presidencywhat looks more and more like a fully planned attempt to hold on to the highest office in the land, first by fraud, then by force. A coup détat.
Is there any of that last flicker of decency and independence alive in the Republican who may soon lead the House majority? Or is McCarthy a worm through and through?
Well know soon, when voters mark their ballots. The future of American democracy may turn on the answer.

I mean, look, I dont trust a thing Kevin McCarthy says. Ill be honest with you. Sometime about a year or two ago, he made the decision that his only goal was to become Speaker of the House. And hell do whatever he has to do, and he thinks that siding with the insurrectionists is the way to get there. Maybe it will make him speaker.
Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), on [link=https://www.mediaite.com/tv/i-dont-trust-a-thing-kevin-mccarthy-says-kinzinger-rips-his-partys-leader-for-claiming-he-doesnt-recall-jan-6-conversation/]CNN[/link]. -

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) [link=https://twitter.com/GOPLeader/status/1556807790433271809]warned[/link] Attorney General Merrick Garland of payback for the search of Trumps property.
McCarthy, who has refused a subpoena from the House Jan. 6 committee, said the Justice Department had reached an intolerable state of weaponized politicization and pledged to investigate if Republicans retook the House in the 2022 midterm elections.
