new audio out of a radio interview that Kevin McCarthy gave soon after 1/6. In it, he says he spoke to Trump after the Capitol riot and Trump admitted that he did bear some responsibility. In the same interview, McCarthy states very strongly that there should be a bipartisan commission set up to investigate what happened and find out exactly who bears responsibility.

What happens on the tape: McCarthy essentially conspires with Rep. LIZ CHENEY (R-Wyo.) about how to get Trump to step down as president after the Jan. 6 insurrection. On the call, Cheney now Trumps Enemy No. 1, but at the time, the House GOPs No. 3 leader asks McCarthy if Trump is going to resign. McCarthy responds: I mean, you guys all know him, too do you think hed ever back away? But what I think Im going to do is Im going to call him The only discussion I would have with him is that I think this [impeachment resolution] will pass and it would be my recommendation you should resign.

An audio recording shows that House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) feared in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack that several far-right members of Congress would incite violence against other lawmakers, identifying several by name as security risks in private conversations with party leaders, the New York Times reports.
Mr. McCarthy talked to other congressional Republicans about wanting to rein in multiple hard-liners who were deeply involved in Donald Trumps efforts to contest the 2020 election and undermine the peaceful transfer of power.
McCarthy referred chiefly to two representatives, Matt Gaetz of Florida and Mo Brooks of Alabama, as endangering the security of other lawmakers and the Capitol complex.

Forgive me. Im not as well versed in civics as many here. Is there anything binding McCarthy to these concessions hes making? Is it just his word? The one that bothers me the most is no debt raising the debt ceiling without spending decreases. What does that even mean? What power would the wounded speaker have to keep a few moderate Republicans to vote with the Dems just like they did recently?
The other stuff will just make the Republicans look stupid and cause the crazies to cost more seats in the next election. I have no problem with that. Leaning in.

Some is binding, other things not. Some of it will be adopted in the House rules package… which would then be binding unless changed.
Some is just his word and he could go back on it.
BUT … it sounds like he is going to allow any single member to make a motion to vacate the chair … so if they get angry and don’t think he’s holding up his end of the deal, they go to the floor, move to vacate, and we’re right back here where we started again.

The Speaker of the House holds the ability to decide whether or not to bring legislation to the floor. He can block it regardless of whether or not there is majority support.-
So if there is bipartisan support for something like a debt ceiling raise there is nothing stopping him from bringing it the floor even if he promised not to?

Trump’s attack on McCarthy (and ask for ‘equal time’) are very under-covered stories because they show that Trump is bothered by what he is seeing. This is Trump’s turf. He knows television and he knows that McCarthy’s decisions have handed the Democrats dozens of hours of primetime friendly broadcasting… and there is no organized Republican defense or response.
