  • Family physician aspiring to get into radiology residency

Posted by max_261 on September 29, 2020 at 10:03 am

    Hi
I am a family physician in practice for a few years and will be applying for radiology residency next year. Have any radiology residents on this forum been in a similar situation? What advice would you give this unconventional applicant to strengthen his application?
    Thank you.

Don’t do it. You won’t have ACGME funding for the entire training, which puts you at a serious disadvantage. Also, it’s a LONG residency bc fellowship is essentially required. Why do you want to leave a relatively cush 300k gig to be a slave for 6 years making 60k, to potentially make 1-200k more (if that) – it makes no sense.

Need to know more about your situation, and programs are likely to ask questions like these:

What’s the reason for the switch? How much exposure to radiology have you had? Do you want more DR or IR? What type of practice do you see yourself in the future? How good are you at taking tests?

Doing a rads residency coming from another specialty isn’t unheard of, but it’s definitely more uncommon given the duration of training. I’d say you can probably do it, but you have to have a very strong reason why.

My friend from high school also dropped out of college and now make a million. So tell your kids to leave college instead of going for higher education.
