  • Exporting anonymized images

Posted by daynaoshannessy_98 on November 2, 2020 at 2:09 pm

Good afternoon, we are an academic institution that has a need to be able to quickly export anonymized images out of our production PACS environment to be used for teaching and publication purposes. We have a teaching file repository with McKesson Study Share as one option but are interested in what other academic institutions are offering as solutions for their radiologists.
    Options for consideration:
Do you have a teaching file solution?
Do you allow export to encrypted drive?
Do you block/prohibit exporting of studies/images from production PACS?
Do you route all requests to a file room to ensure auditable procedures have been followed?
Do you have an alternate solution for exporting studies/images from production PACS?
Finally what is your yearly volume for radiology (# of studies per year)?

This is definitely not a trivial issue,  academic institutions are wrestling with how to reliably de-identify images for many years and it is still a problem as institutions and vendors seem to hide PHI in the most unexpected places. Anyway, you might want to look at MIRC and the related RSNA CTP (clinical trial processor) which is used by quite a few institutions.

Importing encrypted CD’s is the worst!
