[h1][b]Elon Musk’s ad problems[/b][/h1]
In one email, McDonalds chief marketing and customer experience officer Tariq Hassan described Musks acquisition as a situation post-acquisition that objectively can only be characterized as ranging from chaos to moments of irresponsibility. He also said that for many communities, his willingness to leverage success and personal financial resources to further an agenda under the guise of freedom of speech is perpetuating racism resulting [in] direct threats to their communities and a potential for brand safety compromise we should all be concerned about.
He wasnt alone: Colgate-Palmolives vice president and general manager of consumer experience and growth said in an email to the group that she was both excited for the success of the conference while also mindful of the harmful and often racist rhetoric of Elon Musk.
…Musks outspoken conservative political views and occasional direct attacks on his customers have deeply damaged that ad business. The new Twitter owner himself has acknowledged that many top advertisers have paused advertising since he took over, resulting in a [link=https://finance.yahoo.com/news/twitters-revenue-drops-advertisers-voice-232344915.html]steep decline[/link] in revenue.

Twitter is all sorts of wonky. I follow a lot things that I don’t see much if anything in my timeline anymore. Like Cleveland Guardians, some guitar manufacturers and things. But I get served ads left and right for stupid chinese made tchotchkes. Like buy some fans to stick on your dashboard from @bossoshop. Just all really stupid garbage.

[h3][link=https://www.thebulwark.com/so-much-for-elon-musk-free-speech-warrior/]So Much for ‘Elon Musk, Free Speech Warrior'[/link][/h3]
The Twitter-Substack clash has caused even some hardcore Musk supporters to jump ship. This was no Twitter glitch: The functions were deliberately disabled after Substack announced a new feature called Notes, a service for short posts which could be a potential Twitter alternative. These actions were taken with no official announcement from Twitter or Musk. (Disclosure: [i]The Bulwark[/i] extensively uses both Substack and Twitter.)
…
This dumpster fire of an episode is a gloriously stupid finale to the Elon Musk, Free Speech Warrior show that Brett Weinstein and some other Musk allies imagine is still limping along.
…
It wasnt long after the Tesla founder took over Twitter that the limits of his commitment to free speech became apparent. Long before Taibbis revoltjust two weeks after the Twitter Files first dropped in DecemberWeiss, who also played a major role in their publication, criticized Musk for [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/16/business/media/elon-musk-twitter-journalist-suspension.html]booting[/link] journalists from the platform during a spat over an account that [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/14/technology/twitter-private-jet-accounts-suspended.html]tracked[/link] the location of his private jet. (Musk said the account was publishing assassination coordinates for him. In fact, the tracker showed only the origin and destination of the flights some time after takeoff and landing; whats more, not all the suspended journalists had even linked to the tracking account, and some had merely criticized Musk or tweeted links to other social media platforms.)
…
And that doesnt even get into all of the other drama that has plagued Musks Twitter leadership: the many petty fights over the Twitter accounts of mainstream media outlets such as the [i]New York Times[/i] and NPR; the boosting of conspiracy theories; the botched paid service plan and the utter fiasco of dismantling the old system of verification checkmarks. One could debate the reasonspersonality flaws, bad management, or the toxic pull of the right-wing anti-woke counterculture that has turned Musk into its standard-bearer, or most likely all of the above. But the results are clear: even onetime Musk supporters are jumping ship.

He wants privacy rights-for himself and no one else.
He wants money and powerall for him.
What a pillar of humanity-
people make money of platforms. Substack, Twitter, YouTube, Patreon, and the list goes on. That’s why Bobo and Marge are really concerned about Twitter.

[b]Forbes: Elon Musk Made The Twitter Checkmark A Digital Dunce Cap
[/b]On Forbes:
Twitter CEO Elon Musk has been handing out free checkmarks like candy in recent days, after the billionaire swore to remove the legacy checkmarks people acquired before he bought the company in October 2022. But even though Musk is handing them out for nothing, that doesnt mean the celebrities actually want them. Perhaps surprisingly, the checkmark has become a mark of shame for many on the social media platform.
Friends told me my blue verified check was restored. Dont know why. I’ve paid nothing. I gave no number. @StephenKing reported same, Seinfeld actor Jason Alexander tweeted on Saturday.
Alexander went on to explain that the only reason his account is still active on Twitter is so that someone doesnt steal his name and try to impersonate him.
My account remains so no one steals the account name. And I can tell you this madness hasn’t happened on Insta or Spoutible, Alexander continued, referring to competing social media platforms.

[link=https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/12xolhn/verified_becomes_a_badge_of_dishonor/]https://www.reddit.com/r/…s_a_badge_of_dishonor/[/link]
perfect explanation:
There are really two main issues that make the new Twitter verification system a complete nightmare.
The first is the userbase. Very few normal users are willing to pay for a free social media site. Moreover, the main “selling point” of the service is to boost post visibility. The service inherently appeals only to people who both a) care extremely deeply about their posts being seen, and b) make posts that inherently are unappealing to other Twitter users (since people with appealing/interesting/funny/not-weird posts would be able to naturally grow an audience on the platform if they want to). So pretty much every single blue check is a hyper-online weirdo who is deeply bad at posting, despite being obsessed with twitter metrics.
The second is that verified replies get promoted to the top of every post. You have to scroll through all the blue check replies to get to even the most popular non-blue check replies. This is true even for blue check replies that have zero engagement, are completely off-topic, or are just straight up spam or scams.
As a result, if you’re looking for relevant discussion on a popular tweet, you have to first scroll past the thoughts of some of the most terminally online, inherently unlikeable people on the planet. So normal users are constantly exposed to the most off-putting segments of the userbase.
[b]It’s like if Reddit incentivized every antisocial weirdo to post as much as possible to get their money’s worth, and then forced every user to sort by controversial. It’s a horrible structure that makes the product practically unusable for non-weirdos. Which is just how Elon likes it I guess.[/b]

[h1]Elon Musk threatens to reassign @NPR on Twitter to ‘another company'[/h1]
In an unprompted Tuesday email, Musk wrote: “So is NPR going to start posting on Twitter again, or should we reassign @NPR to another company?”
…The threat of retaliation is the latest volley in a months-long conflict between Musk and established media organizations since the billionaire purchased Twitter in October.
…
His remark on Tuesday that he may transfer NPR’s primary Twitter account with nearly 9 million followers to another entity is typical of how Musk has run the social media site.
As is often the case with Musk, it is not clear whether he will follow through on the threat.

The fraudulent “absolutist in free speech” helps governments shut down public dissent.
Money talks. Musk is willing to help shut down free speech if it brings in mammon.
[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/05/02/musk-twitter-censorship-government/]https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/05/02/musk-twitter-censorship-government/[/link]So much for free-speech absolutism. Elon Musk proclaimed his devotion to expression above all else when he took over as Twitter CEO but his tenure has seen the platform become, in many ways, more restrictive. A recent report on global government-ordered takedowns is the latest example.
Rest of World, a nonprofit publication that covers global technology, [link=https://restofworld.org/2023/elon-musk-twitter-government-orders/]examined self-reported data[/link] on companies compliance with requests from authorities to take down users posts or hand over their data. It found that Twitter hasnt refused a single demand since Mr. Musk took over. Those demands, meanwhile, have only mounted surging from 550 in the six months before the sites sale to more than 970 in the six months after. Twitters records show that it fully complied in 808 requests and partially complied in 154. What they dont show is a single case in which it did not acquiesce. The numbers come from the Lumen database maintained by Harvards Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society.
Hes right that platforms face difficult choices in the era of so-called hostage-taking laws, when countries are forcing foreign firms to put employees on the ground as bullying leverage. But social media sites shouldnt simply accept that a repressive countrys interpretation of its laws is the correct interpretation much less that those laws are consistent with international human rights laws. Twitter used to know how to stand up for itself and its users: [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/07/05/india-twitter-content-takedown-censorship/?itid=lk_inline_manual_11]suing the Indian government[/link]over arbitrary and disproportionate removals, and [link=https://www.wired.com/story/elon-musk-free-speech-twitter-global-censorship/]refusing to censor protest content[/link] in support of opposition politician Alexei Navalny in Russia, where the service is now banned.
Today in India, Twitter is [link=https://restofworld.org/2023/twitter-blocked-access-punjab-amritpal-singh-sandhu/]blithely agreeing[/link] to block journalists, authors, politicians and even poets. The only parties able to express themselves as they desire, it appears, are those with the power to shut down dissident voices. In Mr. Musk, the data suggests, they have found a willing ally.
-
He has said his goal with Twitter is to be free-speech absolutist within the bounds of the laws of the nation the Tweet is coming from.
Not quite the scandal you are trying to make it out to be.
-
I guess he should sue to bring free-speech to China. Otherwise he is not in favor of real free speech.

So I was just reading about how Elon is letting blue checks upload 2GB videos. So people are buying the check and uploading a bunch of videos. 100s or more. So its actually blowing past what the storage costs. Tell me again how hes some sort of genius business man.

The article answers that – if you read it that is.

Musk is so delusional that he thinks what he’s done with Twitter is a *good* thing.
[link=https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redirect-to/?redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wsj.com%2Farticles%2Felon-musk-urges-more-companies-to-shrink-like-twitter-9e54708a]https://www.wsj.com/articles/elon-mu…itter-9e54708a[/link]
Elon Musk said more companies should consider running lean like Twitter.
The billionaire Tesla chief executive, speaking virtually at The Wall Street Journals CEO Council Summit in London on Tuesday, said plenty of staffers arent adding value to U.S. companies and that employers might do better with fewer people. Twitter has shrunk from about 8,000 employees to roughly 1,500 since Musk acquired the social-media company last year.
Theres a potential for significant cuts, I think, out of companies without affecting their productivity, Musk said
Twitter is worth LESS than $20B, by his own admission. That’s even less than the market valuation before Musk paid too much for it.
-
-
he may or may not be destroying Twitter (although to this point news of its death has been greatly exaggerated, and mostly what he’s done is piss off everyone on the US political left who are now rooting for everything he does to fail, including Tesla), but pretty sure there’s truth to the statement that a lot of tech companies over hired and got bloated (hence the recent job cuts).
plenty of articles where tech people have talked about how they got hired and literally did no work, like Hooli in HBO’s Silicon Valley.-
Reading about the layoffs a lot are in the content moderation type of work where the pay is not great and they’re exposed to some truly wicked stuff. Like people killing/torturing animals or worse. IMO that should be stepped way the F up and should have direct lines to law enforcement to find the sickos.

yeah, pretty sure there’s a consensus around things like that. Not much of a “let’s promote torturing animals” constituency.
Here’s one of the articles about people being hired and doing no work:
[i]Until last year, Madelyn Machado, 33 years old, worked for Meta. Except she says she didnt really work at all. [/i]
[i]Ms. Machado, who held a position as a recruiter, says that after joining the company in September 2021, she spent much of her time in meetings that didnt accomplish anything, and that the parent of Facebook and Instagram had too many recruiters and not enough work for them to do. [/i]
BTW, her starting salary was $190,000. Does that sound like a well-run company?
[i]Lately, though, he says he has heard from tech executives who have done layoffs and have been startled to realize the cuts didnt have a big effect on productivity.[/i]
[i]Theyre saying, I think Im going to do another, because the first worked out so well, he says. We didnt realize how inefficient we were. [/i]

that sounds like a problem with meetings. I feel that way here sometimes. We have people who solely are here doing meetings all day every day. Don’t even try and fine space on their calendar. That doesn’t mean the person isn’t doing important work either. the $190k sounds like a lot in Cleveland, but in Palo Alto or Mountain View that might not be.
Look at something like Zillow. I just did a quick look. A craptastic looking ranch house is $2 million. That kind of money would buy a hell of lot around CLE. Also the California taxes are high. -

Twitter is now worth just one-third of what Elon Musk paid for the social-media platform, according to Fidelity, which recently marked down the value of its stake in the company.
Fidelity first reduced the value of its Twitter stake in November, to 44% of the purchase price. That was followed by further markdowns in December and February.

TWIT and Musk, perfect together.
What’s next from the billionaire buffoon?
“That man with the swastika tattoos who murdered those people is not a White supremacist. It’s a George Soros and Bellingcat propaganda psyops.”
[link=https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/16/23726310/elon-musk-defends-texas-shooter-bellingcat]https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/16/23726310/elon-musk-defends-texas-shooter-bellingcat[/link]On May 9th, open-source intelligence research group Bellingcat posted a story with [link=https://www.bellingcat.com/news/2023/05/09/tracing-the-odnoklassniki-profile-of-the-texas-mall-shooter/]details about the shooter[/link] that indicated he held white supremacist and neo-Nazi views. Bellingcats story included social media posts from the Russian social network Odnoklassniki that traced back to the shooter, including photos featuring a large swastika tattoo and body armor with a RWDS (Right-Wing Death Squad, [link=https://www.adl.org/glossary/rwdsright-wing-death-squad]a far-right slogan[/link]) patch. The Texas Department of Public Safety [link=https://www.fox4news.com/news/allen-outlets-shooting-livestream-fbi-dps]has also said[/link] that the shooter showed indications of holding neo-Nazi ideology, with an official saying that He had patches. He had tattoos.
But on Twitter on May 9th, Musk replied to a crude meme questioning details about the shooter, [link=https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1655977617583898637]claiming that[/link] Bellingcat literally specializes in psychological operations and saying that this is either the weirdest story ever or a very bad psyop!
CNBCs David Faber asked him about that tweet in an interview Tuesday evening. I think it was incorrectly ascribed to be a white supremacist action, Musk said. And the evidence for that was some obscure Russian website that no ones ever heard of that had no followers. And the company that found this was Bellingcat. And do you know what Bellingcat is? Psyops. In its story, Bellingcat notes that it did not in fact discover the profile; its existence was first [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/08/us/texas-mall-shooting-mauricio-garcia.html]reported by [i]The New York Times[/i][/link][i].[/i]
[i][i]Musks comments about the shooting were part of an escalating series of messages that echo right-wing talking points. In the interview he similarly defended [link=https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/16/business/elon-musk-george-soros/index.html]comments claiming[/link] billionaire philanthropist George Soros, a frequent target of antisemitic conspiracy theories, hates humanity.[/i]

[h1][b]Twitters Ad Sales Plunge[/b][/h1]
Twitters U.S. advertising revenue for the five weeks from April 1 to the first week of May was $88 million, down 59 percent from a year earlier, the [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/05/technology/twitter-ad-sales-musk.html]New York Times[/link] reports.
Twitters ad sales staff is concerned that advertisers may be spooked by a rise in hate speech and pornography on the social network, as well as more ads featuring online gambling and marijuana products._________
Honestly, at this point I think Musk’s best bet to get his $ back is to take Twitter public. Let his fanbois, despite the lack of revenue or a logical business plan, bid the share price back up again.
-
I don’t think getting his money back is his main priority. However, I think he has co-investors who may feel otherwise. Also the employees will want their stock options to be valuable.
But, he just hired a new ad-focused CEO. Since it’s a private company she will be given time to right the ship. My guess is she has a year to show progress. Assuming she wants to stay that long.
Also, with Tesla stock soaring he’s currently worth > $200 billion again. So I doubt current Twitter value is a big deal to him.-

[h1]Twitter looks to reassure anxious advertisers at Cannes[/h1]
Twitter plans to bring on new ad tech partners that can help the company deliver brand-safe campaigns to advertisers, one of its top advertising execs said Tuesday.
The firm, which just hired NBCUniversal advertising vet Linda Yaccarino as its new CEO, needs to build new programs and processes that will help advertisers navigate Twitter’s ever-changing content policies under Elon Musk’s ownership.
[link=https://www.axios.com/2023/06/13/musk-tweets-twitter-ceo-advertisers]As Axios’ Ina Fried wrote last week[/link], “Yaccarino’s job is to rescue Twitter’s business, but Musk shows no interest in moderating behavior and positions that have helped drive many of the platform’s advertisers away.”
[/QUOTE]Whenever I see something about twitter and ad revenue, I keep coming back to this analysis [link=https://www.theverge.com/2022/10/28/23428132/elon-musk-twitter-acquisition-problems-speech-moderation]by Nilay Patel:[/link]
You cannot reasonably expect to collect any meaningful advertising revenue if you do not promise those advertisers brand safety. That means you have to ban racism, sexism, transphobia, and all kinds of other speech that is totally legal in the United States but reveals people to be total assholes. So you can make all the promises about free speech you want, but the dull reality is that you still have to ban a bunch of legal speech if you want to make money.

The article below is quite interesting and gives some insight into how Big Tech has made billions off of selling your personal data. I find it interesting that its mostly the blue states that somewhat limit sale and seem more interesting in protecting consumer privacy information. I wonder why more states dont get on board with this. I suspect theres a long money or political trail.

[b]Twitter isnt letting users view the site without logging in [/b]
Internet users began noticing the change late this week, and on Friday, multiple CNN reporters were unable to access Twitter without logging in.
It was not immediately clear whether the change was an intentional policy update or a [link=https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/12/tech/twitter-breaking/index.html]glitch[/link], both of which have been common at Twitter since Musk took over the platform. Twitter did not respond to a request for comment.
The change comes as billionaire owner Elon Musk attempts to revamp Twitters business following months of challenges since his takeover late last year now with the help of [link=https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/05/tech/linda-yaccarino-twitter-ceo-elon-musk/index.html]new CEO Linda Yaccarino[/link].
The restriction on public access to Twitter could be an effort to grow the platforms user base, which has always been significantly smaller than social media rivals like Facebook and Instagram.
-
It is a strange decision. I think I signed up for Twitter a long time ago but never use it directly. I do click on a lot of links that bring me there. If I were to have to login to view the tweet and the advertising I would merely walk away. Not unlike the paywalls on some of the magazine articles. I thought the currency for these mega Social media platforms was eyeballs?
