Democrats Press Pelosi for Vote Increasing Police Funding
In an effort to address rising crime rates, 19 mostly moderate House Democrats are urging Speaker Nancy Pelosi to hold a vote soon on bipartisan legislation that would increase funding for police departments across the country, [link=https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/-not-defund-democrats-press-pelosi-vote-police-funding-rcna27587]NBC News[/link] reports.

The [link=https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/21888184-axne-gottheimer-letter-to-leadership-to-bring-invest-to-protect-to-the-floor-final-5622]letter[/link] is the latest sign that Democrats, fighting to preserve their fragile majority this fall, are concerned about rising crime and the defund the police messaging from progressives that contributed to the partys loss of 13 House seats in the 2020 election.

If only increasing police funding could stem crime rates.  Sometimes money doesn’t fix the root cause of the problem.

True. Still, taking money away can make it worse.

Move to downtown Chicago or LA and tell me how you like reduced police presence. Easy to spout nonsense from your mostly white community in the suburbs. Enjoy LA with all the open drug scenes or as they are euphemistically called – homeless encampments. Even in more socially liberal Europe they call it what it is- open drug scenes. The most insidious racism is white people thinking they know whats best for the minority community. The minority community if anything wants more police presence not less. Should bad cops also be held accountable? Or course but that is common sense.

Policing doesnt cure the root of the problem. Whats making people go to crime? Id bet its more of a socio-economic problem. Bad parenting, lack of parents. Bad schooling. No good jobs around.

Why is there less crime where I live in the suburbs? Most of the houses here are two parent households. The schools are good. Graduation rates are good. Kids move onto to higher education.

Of course its a socio-economic problem. And of course that should be fixed. But meanwhile have to police the streets. Cant let flash mobs rob every store in the city.

How do you a police a flash mob?  Are there going to be 50 police officers who are happenstance in the place being robbed?  The idea is they smash, grab, and run I believe.

But look at where that’s happening.  My understanding is San Francisco is one of if not the top place for retail theft.  Also happens to be a place where making $100k a year is the poverty level.

                  Social problems are rampant.

This is a capitalist country that dergon makes 95/RVU while his colleagues make 30/RVU.

His statement about police is correct to some extent. I don’t understand why you call him a troll.
House Democrats Reach Deal on Policing Bills
House Democrats have reached a long-elusive agreement on a package of police and community safety bills, according to several of the top stakeholders, with plans for the lower chamber to vote Thursday to send the legislation to the Senate, [link=https://thehill.com/homenews/house/3654245-dems-reach-deal-on-policing-bills-vote-planned-for-thursday/?email=066c0990fa413d52c3842f29a42abb22ffa00eae&emaila=02c3337a6605235631b8cab2e023d54e&emailb=e0d37ab6f97ed06914f0e75a1ebed673001a81f7f84978ff9209f3e23f7ba5d3&utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=policing&utm_term=News%20Alerts]The Hill[/link] reports.

The deal arrives after months of tense talks between moderate Democrats, who have been pushing for a vote on the pro-police package ahead of the midterm elections, and liberals leery of showering new funds on law enforcers without new safeguards for curbing police abuse.

    ___

Tim Scott, the lead Republican negotiator in the Senate, took a dump on the earlier bipartisan package and went back to Democrats are trying to “defund the police” … so I’ll believe it when I see it.

But for House Dems who want to campaign on the fact that they “voted for police support” I suppose it’s good news.

Police Reform Back on the Senate Agenda
Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) plans to reintroduce a version of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act as early as this week and negotiations between him and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) on police reform could resume thereafter, [link=https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redirect-to/?redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.politico.com%2Fnewsletters%2Fplaybook%2F2023%2F01%2F30%2Fwashington-confronts-the-tyre-nichols-tragedy-00080122%3Fnname%3Dplaybook%26nid%3D0000014f-1646-d88f-a1cf-5f46b7bd0000%26nrid%3D0000015a-0e6e-dc8c-ab7a-7e7fb2270000%26nlid%3D630318]Politico[/link] reports.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) [link=https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redirect-to/?redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fabcnews.go.com%2FThisWeek%2Fvideo%2F1-1-sen-dick-durbin-ill-96747994]told ABC News[/link] the bipartisan group that tried and failed to negotiate a bill last year should try again, calling their effort the right starting point.

[link=https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/3836754-scott-says-democrats-are-to-blame-for-the-failure-of-police-reform-legislation/]Scott says Democrats are to blame for the failure of police reform legislation[/link]
starting off second round of negotiations on the good foot I see …

Yesterday on ABCs This Week, Sen. Durbin asked Sen. Booker and I to come back to the table and start talking about policing in America. I never left the table, Scott declared on the Senate floor.
But it was Sen. Durbin who filibustered my JUSTICE Act. It was Sen. Durbin who called the effort to make de-escalation training more available a token piece of legislation, Scott said.

One of the biggest sticking points between the two parties on police reform is the issue of qualified immunity, which shields law enforcement from liability in most civil lawsuits. Democrats have insisted that qualified immunity get the ax in reform legislation, but Republicans have dug in to defend it.
but perhaps some potential compromise ….
Graham floats potential compromise on qualified immunity
Qualified immunity is the rule that shields law enforcement from liability in civil lawsuits unless accusers can prove that the allegations amount to a violation of constitutional rights and those rights are clearly established. It is a hurdle that a number of activists and some lawmakers say is unclear in many police misconduct cases.

Graham floated on social media that while he doesnt believe individual officers should have civil lawsuits filed against them, he does believe that police departments should face liability for the actions of their officers.

Qualified immunity seems like a handout to insurers, and to cops.  Get rid of that and when departments lose insurance coverage I’ll bet we see some change.

Yeah. There’s a good argument to make police officers carry *individual* liability insurance.

The department could pay for it as a benefit … but you bet your a** that the insurer would start dropping coverage from problem officers in order to limit their own liability.

Trump brags to Bret Baier about granting Alice Johnson clemency.

Baier informs him that she would be killed under his proposed policy proposal of executing drug dealers.

Trump is caught off guard: “No, no. No. Under my pl. Under that? UHHHHHHHHHHH…”
