[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/05/19/chris-christie-2024-trump-revenge/]Aaron Blake[/link]: Christie seems prepared to be the one to test the theory, common in Trump-critic circles, that Republicans need to actually go at Trump if theyre to have any chance of defeating him. The problem with that, similar to the GOPs approach to Trump for years, is that nobody wants to be the one to leap and make that case. Better to let someone else torpedo themselves in the process. And then nobody does.
Notably, Christies probably best situated to do it. While Never Trumpers love Liz Cheney, and Asa Hutchinson and Chris Sununu appear ready to make such a case, Christie actually has a track record here that suggests it could matter. -

Christie will make the announcement at a town hall at Saint Anselm College at 6:30pm ET on Tuesday.

I warned that Trump is an asymmetrical fighter, so its hard to know how to go at him. Clinton tried to rise above him, and Marco Rubio imitated his crude style.
You just brought up two of the most unskilled politicians Ive ever met, Christie said, noting about Trump: I dont think hes ever gone up against somebody who knows how to do what he does. Hes never run against somebody from New Jersey who understands what the New York thing is and what hes all about. For people like me, whove grown up here and lived my whole life in this atmosphere, hes just one of a lot of people I know who have that personality. He knows I know what his game is.

I have to tell you the truth, I cant completely answer that until I know what he was charged with and convicted of, Christie said. Im not going to dodge the answer. [b]But I will tell you as a prosecutor, if I believe someone has gotten a full and fair trial in front of a jury of their peers, and especially someone in public life, who committed those crimes when they held a public trust, I cant imagine pardoning him.[/b]

Said Christie: Come on. Guy is 78-years-old. Id kick his ass.
He added that he would fight Donald Trump anywhere he wants in any arena he wants. Whether its on a debate stage, or in the octagon.
