  • Child of academic radiologist applying for residency in the department

Posted by beatlesfandan_539 on August 3, 2023 at 11:07 am

I am in an academic radiology department. Just a lowly worker bee, no administrative role whatsoever. Good reputation in that regard.
My son is in medical school and will be applying for residency next year. I am strongly encouraging him to pursue radiology and apply to my department. I am wondering how my being here could affect his application? Could it help it because I am appreciated here and they would hope he would be like me? Or, could it hurt it, to avoid suspicions of nepotism? Anybody has seen a similar situation recently?
    Thank you for your input.

As long as he isn’t grossly underqualified I would expect him to get a spot. I would be super mad if my son had a decent application and didn’t get a spot at my program.

One of the residents at my program had a parent as faculty. I do not think she would have gotten in without the parental help. She did fine and passed the boards like all of us.
