We aren’t even talking about the same thing.  I’m not even trying to refute it.  That’s why I keep repeating myself.

There’s no reason at all to think that the covid outcome would have been any different with Biden as President given 1. the nature of the disease 2. the nature of Americans and 3. the precedent of the Swine Flu response that Biden was a part of.

This is independent of Trump. NY and NJ were the failures anyway.  It’s Trump’s fault they failed but would have been Trump’s fault if he tried to intervene too.

The police presence around the area today was very high.  I saw a control booth being setup by the museum of contemporary art.

Dr. Feelgood  to the rescue (of Trump’s unsubstantiated claim about Biden and drugs)

[link=https://twitter.com/justinbaragona/status/1310752152071987201]https://twitter.com/justi…us/1310752152071987201[/link]

Sean Hannity brings on Dr. Ronny Jackson, former White House physician turned Trumpy congressional candidate, specifically to accuse Biden of using PEDs: “But I think its reasonable to ask if hes taking medications to help him with his alertness and his memory.”

I guess team Trump is all-in on lowering the bar for Biden:
Giuliani Claims Biden Has Dementia
Rudy Giuliani told [link=https://twitter.com/revrrlewis/status/1310904556574986240]Fox & Friends[/link] that Joe Biden has dementia. Theres no doubt about it. Ive talked to doctors.
He added: The presidents quite right to say maybe hes taken adderall.
Trump Is a Better Debater Than You Remember
[link=https://www.politico.com/news/2020/09/29/trump-debate-performance-2016-422838]Ryan Lizza[/link]: After watching hours of Trumps debates from 2015 and 2016, what comes across in hindsight is that he had an under-appreciated style, strategy, and message. He was not the Donald Trump of Twitter, where he launches his crudest attacks. He was not the Donald Trump of MAGA rallies, where he feeds off the crowd and plays a role that is a mix of demagogue, right-wing pundit, and entertainer.

The matchup with Biden will be much different. Trump is an unpopular incumbent with a record to defend. He no longer has as clear a message as he did in 2016. Biden has the benefit of four extra years to study Trump.

But the conventional wisdom about Trump arriving in Cleveland Tuesday as a manic and extremely, well, Trumpy, debater could be wrong. Trump won the Republican nomination partly on the strength of his debate appearances. And while post-debate polls were generally favorable to Hillary in 2016, Trumps three general election debates were crucial to his victory.

Well, these aren’t actually debates in the traditional sense so neither of them are good debaters.  But, Trump is good at gotcha moments, picking up on weaknesses of the other candidates, and making them feel uncomfortable/look bad.  It would be cool if we had actual debates rather than these weird Q and A showmanship things.

The earpiece, “drugs”, and “maybe he got the questions in advance” are all obviously insane disinformation, but also useful to view their objective: preparing trump’s base to disbelieve their own eyes if Biden does well, and angst from Trump’s media machine that Trump will do badly and need that excuse.

Rush Limbaugh told his listeners today he is still convinced Biden won’t debate tonight, saying he is “gearing up to cancel.” Limbaugh cited the earpiece conspiracy being pushed by Trump camp, calling it “overwhelmingly stunning” Biden won’t submit to his ears being inspected. Also says the tax story is a dud.

Alternate universe.

Interesting sort of jab at Cleveland Clinic from Bloomberg. CCF massive profits but leaving its surrounding community behind.

Wouldve been nice if they mentioned the UH facility that was put there and new Daves market which also had a genesis in the neighbors at UH.

I’ sure it’s fine for his base, but I can’t see any undecded or soft Biden voter flipping based on this performance.

Biden scripted and slightly confused.

Trump childlike, angry, and off topic

Wallace very biased with questioning and lack of Biden follow up. Each question framed to attack trump in some way.

Trump won the economy and law and order stuff. Biden won covid and healthcare stuff. Climate change was a draw.

Overall 60/40 Biden. Probably doesn’t change much but trump needed it to change things so Biden likely to win in November

I dont think Trump won any of it. You couldve just put a repeater up there with the greatest hits. LAW AND ORDER. Hunter Biden getting 3 million from the mayor of Moscow is a new one.

Biggest loser Chris Wallace. That was some weak performance. Although Trump probably needs a muzzle to keep things on track.

My main fear was that Biden would do something embarrassing or stupid and give the few undecideds a reason to vote for Trump.

I came away satisfied, as he was mostly fine with a few good jabs. Many other democrats could have done better, but that’s not really the point.

Trump was exactly as expected. A lying deranged monster, a total embarrassment to our country. Hard to imagine this moves the needle in his direction. Telling Proud Boys to “stand by” was a particularly gruesome moment for American politics.

A bit off-topic, but I have discussed this numerous times in the past.

I can say that there is a positive correlation between my work-hours AM posting rate and my clinical productivity.

I use web browsing and posting as a way to take a “break” without getting up from the workstation.

Great question. I open up the forums page  and will see the last 6 or 7 threads that were responded to are often the same poster dergon sometime frumi.  I open the site today and last night there were people posting in real time as debate was going. Many times what dergon posts is often in the end not true e.g the three years copy paste on collusion delusion. Their behavior is obsessive  and consuming. Perhaps should be in counseling. Really 17479 posts by dergon and approaching almost 20,000 posts by furious on an anonymous website that perhaps gets read by several hundred people if that. Weekend holidays doesn’t matter. Many of their posts (off topic politics)  change nothing in anyone’s life but theirs because it is their release valve to promote their political views and treatment for their TDS. Others are following along with the number of posts.

Here is another way to look at it. Since dergon cuts paste he needs time to read the article, copy only the points he wants, post it on AM and perhaps add a comment. Let’s say the average time for all his posts was 7 minutes. Its probably longer on some shorter on others.

7min x 17479 posts = 122,353 minutes / 60min/hr = 2039.21 hours / 24hrs/day = 84.96 days of his life spent posting on anonymous board many of it copy paste politics.  Furious is worse. He has probably spent closer to 5 months of his life.

It is absolutely NUTS! Sorry but there are better things to do in one’s life than give up 85 days and growing by the minute posting on an anonymous forum that means nothing.

Biden is virtually a corpse, wishing he could be in the nursing home playing bingo instead

1st debate I can recall where challenger calls the president a liar & racist white supremicist & no one, I mean no one at all is shocked & calling shame because its all more than true.

Trump had no retort because it is all true.

& could not even disavow his racist white supremacist supporters & their violence even after Wallace gave him multiple opportunities.

Egg all over Trumps angry face. Posing to be the tough guy goes only so far when you are an empty person.

Of the three headlines I chose earlier yesterday pre-debate it was by closest to #2  “clash in fiery debate”

That means it’s a nothing overall.  If you adhere to the conventional wisdom that Trump is currently behind in the race and needs to do something to change the dynamic, then a sh*tshow draw is good for Biden overall ….. no change.

____________

Headlines:

ABC:  “First Presidential Debate Spirals into Chaotic Clash” (lower headline is Trump’s refusal to denounce White Supremacy)
CBS: “Stand Back and Stand By” Trump doesn’t Condemn White Supremacists.   (Second headline: “Debate Watchers say Biden Won First Debate”)

NBC:Debate Turns into Melee as Trump Stearolls Rules, Biden Fires Back    (Second Headline: “Proud Boys say they are “Standing By” after Trump Call-out)
Politico: Why Trump resorted to torching the debate Unlike in 2016, he lacks a clear message or line of attack against his opponent. What remained was bullying, interruptions and ad hominem provocations.
WaPo: Trump plunges debate into fiery squabbling
NYT: Trump’s Mockery and Deceptions add Chaos to First Debate
WSJ: A Depressing Debate Spectacle
Bloomberg:  Trumps Bare-Knuckle Night With Biden Risks Repelling Key Voters

From the Right:

Fox News: Trump, Biden, in fiery debate, trade barbs on taxes, pandemic and plain old schoolyard name-calling (Lower Headline – DAVID BOSSIE: Trump clearly defeats Biden in first presidential debate)

From the Left:

MSNBC –  Trump destroys another U.S. institution with debate display (Second Headline – Far-right group shares Trump’s words online after he tells them to ‘stand by’

_______

Some locals from swing states:
The Philadelphia Inquirer- Bad things happen in Philadelphia, Trump says at debate, renewing false claim about poll watchers

Miami Herald – Chaotic first debate: Taunts overpower Trump, Biden visions

The Columbus Dispatch – ‘Would you shut up, man?’ Trump, Biden debate devolves into chaos for much of the night

The Arizona Republic – Trump, Biden bicker in first presidential debate full of personal insults

Miwuakee Journal Sentinel – Trump-Biden debate; court rules on election deadline

____
My overall: This first debate will simply add to and blend in with the general public dysphoria with our politics. It will have no significant impact on the race.

Also, Biden gave no significant moment to suggest he lacks mental faculties. That’s a Biden win.

No, the choice is more chaos & incompetency of an egomaniac whose skills are nothing more than the lies and vitriol seen last night over a candidate who actually wants to improve the country & standards for all in the country, not just the minority who support him for his vitriol & tax cuts.

Agree.

Trump’s bullying/interrupting/badgering wasn’t just Trump being Trump. It was clearly tactical.

He wanted to get Biden flustered and force him into a moment of confusion or anger that could be used as a negative viral moment by the campaign to reinforce the cognitive decline narrative.  That didn’t happen.

The strategy was, however, effective at preventing Biden from ever clearly and cogently laying out his vision to the American public (and preventing headlines from the press focusing on the same.)

Another take away –

Biden was able to clearly stake a middle ground in Democratic (and American) politics.  Trump tried to bait Biden into claiming the far left movements and Biden wouln’t bite … he didn’t even nibble.

Biden team must feel they clearly have the far left locked down because it was an obvious tack to the middle.

To be honest, I was hoping Biden would be able to explain his positions more and I hope that he will be pressed more as we go.  He hasn’t had to really “stand” for anything.  I was really disappointed in Wallace.  Really disappointed.  Not only for the clear bias but just not even trying to press Biden on anything.  Heck, he even laid out Biden’s own energy plan for him.

A mic cutoff is the only thing that would work to shut up Trumps angry chaos tactic, he would never pay attention to lights showing his time expiring/expired. Just remember Trump trying to step all over Bidens statements to change the subject during the 2 minutes of uninterrupted talk.

Although I do have to say that watching Trumps clenched teeth, jutting chin & just making faces was entertaining.

Ah, the most important numbers from last night.

27 million viewers.

1st debate in 2016: 84 million.

A lot more people have already made up their minds.

Thats what I thought too. Some streaming but nowhere near 50 million.

The impression I had was that people were more politically engaged these days. That may be wrong. This is the equivalent of saying people are more engaged in the NFL but then seeing a 60% drop in the playoffs.

Something is off.

I think it’s the same reaction most people had to the debate last night…annoyance.  Everyone is annoyed with government and politics between covid, BLM riots, etc.  I can’t say I blame them.  I was a solid Republican for years and now am a “lean right” independent.  I’m not voting for Biden but I might not vote for Trump either – despite what Frumi and Chiro think.

I will say this.  I firmly believe that if a person cut out 1. politics and 2. social media from his/her life, they would be significantly happier on a daily basis

A prediction (and likely another error by Trump) —   I guess that he made this first debate so ugly that the subsequent audiences will be much smaller.   He needs lots of eyes watching when/if he lands a solid punch on Biden or forces him into a major gaffe.

There may be increased interest and scrutiny on the VP debate as well since Harris has a higher than normal chance of becoming President or at least running seriously in 4 years.

[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/09/30/debate-was-nightmare-fitting-summation-trumps-presidency/]Karen Tumulty[/link]: The nightmare that played out Tuesday evening on a debate stage in Cleveland served at least one useful purpose. It encapsulated, in a single 98-minute span, the entire presidency of Donald J. Trump.

All of the impulses that drive Trump were unleashed: The lying. The rage. The bluster. The incoherence.

It is hard to imagine that anyone but the most obdurate of partisans could have watched the spectacle and thought, Gee, wouldnt it be great to have four more years of this?

All politicians lie all the time.  Some (Trump) are just more obvious about it.  Bush and Obama lied all the time.  Clinton literally was impeached for lying.

No incentive to “hire” good people to lead us.  No incentive for them to be honest.  No incentive for them to even do a good job.  Just bad all around.

No incentive to “hire” good people to lead us.  No incentive for them to be honest.  No incentive for them to even do a good job.  Just bad all around.

zero equivalence between Trump and any of the people you mention.

I absolutely agree Trump is a terrible President. Go back through my few posts and you will not see a post that I have supported him. In fact the last couple of times I posted indicated my frustration that the country is screwed because he and Biden are awful corrupt individuals. You will see early on in the primary I indicated support for Mayor Pete. And if anyone on here is angry Chiro aka KPack it has been you over the years.

Well, Biden is no ones 1st choice except compared to Trump. But Biden is the candidate & thousands of times better than Trump in every way.

Mayor Pete isnt bad except he needs to grow more experience, not to mention Evangelicals inability to deal with his sexuality. Whats harder, religious fundamentalists hate of homosexuals or some white people hate of non white people?

Oh man, I hate Trump.  He’s a terrible person.  It’s just as you said…I feel like the Left wing/socialist movement is (borrowing a phrase from the left wing media) an existential crisis.  Am I mad that our country is Clinton v Trump and Biden v Trump instead of millions of more qualified people?  Yep.

Pete ran 20 years too early and blew his chance.

The funny thing is that you mention Evangelicals not wanting to deal with his sexuality but his sexuality is also the reason he got as far as he did.

No.  What I’m saying is that the reason he got as far as he did in the Dem primary was in part because he is gay.  If he was a hetero white guy from South Bend, IN, no one would have taken a second look.  He had a “hook” from the Left’s point of view.  I think he has an impressive resume so it shouldn’t matter, but that’s the truth.

Bring back Ross Perot and Admiral Halsey…I mean Admiral Stockdale.  Now THAT would be a Presidental and VP debate worth tuning in to…

“The budget should be balanced, the treasury should be refilled, the public debt should be reduced and the arrogance of public officials should be controlled.”
“We’ve shipped millions of jobs overseas and we have a strange situation because we have a process in Washington where after you’ve served for a while you cash in and become a foreign lobbyist, make $30,000 a month; then take a leave, work on Presidential campaigns, make sure you got good contacts, and then go back out”
“If someone is blessed as I am is not willing to clean out the barn, who will?
If you see a snake, just kill it – don’t appoint a committee on snakes.

…and who can forget Admiral Halsey-
“Who am I? Why am I here?”

What!! Ross Perot is dead? So is Stockdale? Damn….There goes the country…

“We need to give Brazil $50 billion to prevent wildfires in California” – Joe Biden

“White supremacists – stand by” – Donald Trump

My opinion of the debate was it was a tie.

The polls are nearly universally in favor of Biden, and will likely be pegged as such throughout.

One rarely makes any money betting with the squares.

When I look at other indicators, the Democrats have shifted from emphasizing mail in voting to voting in person. This indicates that they were receiving data on early voting that contradicts how their modeling thought it would go.

As noted, ratings dropped precipitously this time as compared to 2016. So voters have likely made up their minds.

This is likely a bad thing for Biden. Everyone has made up their mind about Trump. Biden however has been in a bunker for 6 months after a 4 year hiatus from public view. This was peoples first real chance to see if he really was demented or not. This was their first chance to make up their mind about Biden.

Relatively few people cared enough to bother.

Thats my contrarian opinion.

Someone told me there used to be great predictors on the board who thought similarly and made big money, much to the chagrin of the lefties on here. I think Cubsfan sent me a link, it was super funny how they got facialized.
