  • Ron Desantis, GOP Governor of Florida, Potential Presidential Candidate

He deserves his own thread too ….

I hope this first post is a real trend (although it would not at all surprise if DeSantis came out of this trough and won the GOP nomination in 2024) …

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been untouchable for the past year as he commanded the Republican culture wars to become heir apparent to Donald Trump. The latest coronavirus surge is starting to change that.

Covid infection rates continue to climb as the state faces shortages of health care staff, morgue space and even oxygen for patients. About 16,000 people are hospitalized. Child infection rates have shot up. School districts even in Republican strongholds have rebelled against DeSantis anti-mask mandates. And cruise lines are resisting DeSantis vaccine passport ban. Even his recent poll numbers are slipping.

He pushed vaccines and got them to the wealthiest Floridians first. Ow for everyone else hes pushing the antibody treatment for after you get it. Nothing he does makes much sense to me and its not surprising hes losing his grip.

As someone that would like to see a moderate come out of both primaries (I know wishful thinking) I wonder what someone who is more to the poles thinks. With this trend, does it make you want him more or less as the Republican candidate? I know it was closer than comfort in 2020 but there was never a real chance that DJT would win IMO. The more RD takes on the Trump qualities the less those like me will want him as a candidate.

2020 was a coin flip election, like 2016.  2024 is very likely to also be a close election.  It’s just the nature of the current electoral college make-up.
[b]Any[/b] Republican that gets the nomination has decent chance of becoming President.

Trump pretty much shattered the idea that Americans wouldn’t vote for a racist, incompetent, a**hole with no qualifications.   So in no way am I going to hope for the worst GOP candidate in 2024.

The most important thing I would want to see is that *both* the Republican and the Democrat nominee are strongly pro-Democracy, actively looking to restore confidence in the peaceful transition of power.

Unfortunately, that’s pretty much the opposite of what GOP base voters want.  They want a trump fighter who is going to own the libs and scorn institutions.

I would like to see a Hogan, Kasich, Romney-type. Anti-Trump.

But unless the Republican party dynamic changes a lot over the next 2 years, we’re going to get someone Trumpy.  The only question is just how Trumpy they are.

You and I have the same goal then. I suppose the man difference is how to make it happen. I can say one thing for sure. The language of people like chiro, kpack, Fumi etc. make our goal less likely.

[b]Wealthy GOP Donors Flock to Ron DeSantis[/b][/h1]
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has cemented himself as the face of GOP opposition to anti-Covid-19 mandates a position that is winning over not only rank-and-file voters ahead of the 2024 presidential primaries but also some of the Republican Partys wealthiest donors, [link=https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/wealthy-gop-donors-flock-desantis-presidential-speculation-swirls-n1278172]NBC News[/link] reports.

How the race shapes up will first and foremost be determined by whether former President Donald Trump decides to run. But many donors are investing early in potential candidates like DeSantis, whom polling shows to be the leading Trump alternative in the prospective presidential field.

DCD. By everyone are you including both sides? I once said that one good thing to come
out of Trump would be to give courage to the real extremists to out themselves. It helps to know who your enemy is. We have seen a lot of that.

He also got them the vaccine doses first.  So I guess they’re paying back the favor.

Seems like a waste.  He’s got manatees starving to death in the Indian River because of run offs killing sea grass.   10% of the Florida manatees have died this year.  How about take that 100 million and do something about that.

Manatees don’t vote. People concerned with manatees are tree-huggers who likely do not vote Trump-Republican.

[h1][b]DeSantis Seeks to Remove Unauthorized Aliens[/b][/h1]
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis fight with the Biden administration over immigration has led to a $1.6 million state-funded border mission in Texas, a lawsuit against the federal government and an executive order enlisting the states law enforcement agency to collect information on potential illegal immigrants relocated to Florida by the federal government, the [link=https://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics-government/state-politics/article256483961.html]Miami Herald[/link] reports.

Now, the Republican governor wants $8 million to create a new program that would allow the state to contract with private companies to transport unauthorized aliens out of Florida.

[b]Ron DeSantis is following Trumps white supremacy playbook[/b]

The first rule of the MAGA movement: Never condemn white supremacists.

    [link=https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redirect-to/?redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Fopinions%2F2022%2F02%2F01%2Fdesantis-refuses-condemn-nazis-follows-trump-white-supremacy%2F]https://www.washingtonpost.com/opini…ite-supremacy/[/link]

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who apparently longs to inherit the mantle of MAGA leader, has paid attention. In his state, images of a Nazi flag-waving group shouting antisemitic slurs in Orlando flooded news coverage over the weekend. The governors press secretary [link=https://www.heraldtribune.com/story/news/politics/2022/01/31/gov-ron-desantis-and-press-secretary-christina-pushaw-over-nazi-rally-response/9293703002/]tweeted[/link] (and soon deleted) a bizarre suggestion: Do we even know theyre Nazis?

…DeSantis lashed out at those who called on him to condemn Nazi demonstrations that had taken place over the weekend near Orlando, accusing his political opponents of trying to smear me as if I had something to do with it. He insisted he would not be playing their game.

Anyone who thinks DeSantis would be an improvement over the unapologetically racist former president need only look at this episode to see why that is wrong. On its surface, refusing to condemn Nazis in a swing state such as Florida makes no sense. But in the twisted MAGA world of white supremacy, it makes perfect sense.

[b]DeSantis Wants to Lead the Culture Wars[/b][/h1]
[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/02/26/desantis-trump-cpac/]Washington Post[/link]: The Conservative Political Action Conference, an activist jamboree that has long been a hive of anti-political correctness, helped launch and sustain Donald Trumps political career. But another Republican took the CPAC stage this week to deliver indignation and defiance that left little doubt he sees himself as an heir to the former presidents role as the rights commander in Americas deepening cultural wars.

Addressing thousands at CPACs Orlando confab, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis blasted what he called the countrys biomedical security state for encouraging vaccine and face mask mandates. He slammed corporations and universities for being infected with a woke virus that is trying to tear at the fabric of society. And the governor called on Americans to put on the full armor of God to combat liberals.

[b]DeSantis Sees Big Re-election Win as Springboard to White House[/b][/h1]
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R( wont say whether hell run for president, but hes starting to acknowledge that his road to the White House might hinge on a big re-election win this year, [link=https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/elections/desantis-eyes-big-florida-win-november-white-house-springboard-rcna26714]NBC News[/link] reports.

For months, Florida Capitol insiders and Republicans familiar with the governors thinking have speculated that a resounding victory in November would strengthen his national bona fides as a top GOP presidential contender even if his political benefactor, former President Donald Trump, decides to run again.

Polling on it is mixed. Floridians generally support the “don’t say gay” legislation (76% of Republicans support while on 52% of Democrats oppose [link=https://news.yahoo.com/poll-only-52-of-democrats-oppose-floridas-dont-say-gay-policy-214144683.html)]https://news.yahoo.com/po…policy-214144683.html)[/link]

But, people [b]don’t[/b] like DeSantis going after “woke corporations” at all.

        [link=https://www.reuters.com/world/us/americans-do-not-support-politicians-punishing-firms-their-views-reutersipsos-2022-04-29/]https://www.reuters.com/w…utersipsos-2022-04-29/[/link]

62% are less likely to support a politician that goes after corporations.  If the Florida spat spirals out of hand to the point that taxpayers are actually on the hook, you can guarantee the number will be worse than that.

That said, the politics for DeSantis are different than the overall polling.   He is likely cruising to an easy re-elect in Florida. He needs to be considered the Trump heir apparent with the GOP base. So he is willing to take some positions that are overall unpopular in order to secure that position with Republican primary voters.

I think Floridians particular I-4 corridor Floridians definitely do not like the war with Disney because of desantis has his way there property taxes which are already high are going up 25%

No fng way that happens so desantis and his cronies will definitely have to cave at some point

As far as his re-election I think its very likely for the simple reason that the florida state Democratic Party is currently in dissarray

That being said I doubt he wins by a huge margin

He is widely viewed by many Floridians as not paying attention to pressing matters InThe state

          Those are
          1. Property taxes
          2. Insurance premiums both home and auto
          3. The red Tide issue on gulf coast

If democrats had a decent candidate he probably would not win

Unfortunately the democrats in florida have their heads up their butts

A spokeswoman for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) this week registered as a foreign agent of a former president of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, belatedly detailing work she performed for the politician between 2018 and 2020.

The spokeswoman, Christina Pushaw, made the disclosure following contact from the Justice Department, according to her attorney, Michael Sherwin. She began her work in 2018 as a volunteer in the post-Soviet country, Sherwin said, and was ultimately paid $25,000 over the course of two years. She received her first payment, of $10,000 in October 2018, in cash, according to her filing. She stayed for free for six weeks in an apartment owned by a Saakashvili associate.

Her efforts included writing op-eds, reaching out to supporters and officials, and advocating on his behalf in Georgia and in the United States, Sherwin said. The work ended in 2020. Ms. Pushaw was notified recently by the DOJ that her work on behalf of Mr. Saakashvilli likely required FARA registration. Ms. Pushaw filed for the registration retroactively as soon as she was made aware.

[h1]Ready for Ron means ready for Trump war[/h1]
New PAC supporting DeSantis co-opts the MAGA brand. It’s being led by Ed Rollins, the former campaign chair of Reagan’s 1984 re-elect

The America-First agenda MUST be revived. Governor Ron DeSantis is the next great American president like [link=https://thehill.com/people/ronald-reagan/]Ronald Reagan [/link]and Donald Trump who will turn our country around. This is followed [link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf4ql3-0npg]by a video[/link] that boldly and unabashedly brands DeSantis as the new freedom-fighting President Reagan.

Speaking of the former president, ultimately, Ready for Ron means the Don is Ready for Retirement. But how will Trump with his hyperactive email communications and president-titled Republican Party mailings be dethroned without a Game of Thrones-style blood bath?

The answer could be royal adoration, as illustrated in Rollinss quote from the Ready for Ron press release: The era of President Trump was wonderful, but now, since he isnt currently running, we must get ready for a new leader, we must be Ready For Ron. Combined with the previously mentioned statement, DeSantis would be a great American president like Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump, is the royal adoration translation: Hey Don, you got your GOP gold-plated legacy, now anoint your successor and go play golf.

Moving forward with the America First agenda while the MAGA founder is crazy-glued to the GOP throne means Ready for Ron and Gov. Ron are royally careening toward an uncivil Trump-style war.

However, the most potentially significant intervening variable in modern political history is if Attorney General Merrick Garland is ready to defend the rule of law and bring King Trump to justice for criminal actions relating to Jan. 6, 2021. And then, we all must be ready to expect the unexpected.

[h1]Is Ron DeSantis Less Dangerous Than Trump?[/h1]
    [link=https://www.thebulwark.com/if-ron-desantis-is-actually-less-dangerous-than-trump-maybe-he-should-say-so/]Tim Miller[/link]:

On one side of this debate you have the Trump-skeptical conservatives, ranging from [link=https://frenchpress.thedispatch.com/p/no-ron-desantis-isnt-worse-than-trump]good faith[/link] [link=https://twitter.com/RpsAgainstTrump/status/1542555480886808584]Never Trumpers[/link] trying to navigate this question, to [link=https://twitter.com/salnuzzo/status/1544689219897102337]not-so-good-faith[/link] [link=https://twitter.com/NRO/status/1546691595696742400]Trump[/link] [link=https://twitter.com/RichLowry/status/1546554298816929793]apologists[/link] who have spent seven years kicking and subtweetingbut who always seem to find their way back into Trumps ample embrace. They argue that Trump is clearly more dangerous than DeSantis; some demonstrate disdain over the notion that this is even a question. (In the case of the anti-anti-Trumpers it turns out that some of them are finally willing to admit that Trump was dangerousbut only as a way to own the libs by plumping for DeSantis.)

Honestly, I think a reasonable case could be made for either view. You can peruse the various links above if you want to decide for yourself. As for me, gun to my head, Id side with the people saying DeSantis would be less of an existential threat.

To be clearsaying someone is less of an existential threat to democracy than Donald Trump might be the faintest praise ever uttered in American politics. It doesnt carry with it any rejection of the many legitimate concerns that we small-l liberals have about a potential DeSantis administration. It merely acknowledges that Trumps psychopathy is so extreme as to put him in a category all of his own. And as such, anything that keeps him from darkening the halls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue again is almost certainly an improvement.[/QUOTE]

[/link]People who havent met him think hes a hot commodity. People who have met him arent so sure.

DeSantis works harder than Trump does, and is more disciplined and capable of adapting. He attended Yale and Harvard Law School and clearly took some classes in populism. He could conceivably grow more adept at carrying on conversations in diners and pretending to care about the pet issues of self-important state reps in the North Country.

But certain political skills are more innate, and require an ability to ad-lib that DeSantis lacks. He can appear needlessly snappish and reactive (earlier this year, [link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9syRGE51HE]he scolded a group of high-school students[/link] for wearing masks onstage behind him). One particular interlude during DeSantiss 2022 campaign bears revisiting. It occurred during a debate with his Democratic opponent, Charlie Crist, who attempted to pin down the governor on whether he would commit to serving out his four-year term if reelected. In other words, was DeSantis running for president in 2024 or not? Yes or no, Ron? Crist pressed him. DeSantis froze. Its a fair question and he wont tell you, Crist said, filling the silence.

DeSantis probably figuredrightlythat he was in no danger of losing to Crist and might as well suffer through the silence rather than complicate things when he decides to bolt from Florida to run for president. But a fluid politician could have better finessed that exchange. And Trump likely took note and filed this away. He knew and assessed the weaknesses of DeSantis on the debate stage and in the media space, Wilson wrote in [link=https://resolutesquare.com/articles/5TxumAQ2xQmuDiXNujcn6T/maga-trump-election-gop-desantis-younkin-mccarthy]his Resolute Square essay[/link], concluding that Trump will tear him to pieces. He smelled blood.

Republicans who want to save the party from Trump are investing great hope in a blank slate. The [i]New York Post[/i] has dubbed him [link=https://nypost.com/cover/november-9-2022/]DeFuture[/link]. I would dub that DeBatable.

      [h1]The Jeb Bush of 2024[/h1]
[link=https://resolutesquare.com/articles/5TxumAQ2xQmuDiXNujcn6T/maga-trump-election-gop-desantis-younkin-mccarthy]Rick Wilson[/link]: Ron DeSantis is a strange no-eye-contact oddball. Is he smart? At least academically, but smart and electable arent an overlapping Venn diagram. Is he a great candidate? Get the f*ck out of here. A conservative governor with infinite financial resources at his disposal running in a conservative state against a spent-force three-time loser hated by both his old party and his new party?

Winning Florida isnt the flex DeSantis and his stans think it is.

There was a key moment that ensured Donald Trump would re-enter the 2024 race, and it came courtesy of Charlie Crist. There was a moment in the one debate between DeSantis and Crist where Charlie knocked Ron back hard. DeSantis stood there for a noticeably long pause before he could respond. Trump saw that. He processed that. He knew and assessed the weaknesses of DeSantis on the debate stage and in the media space, where he is the unquestionable master. He smelled blood. DeSantis of 2024 is the Jeb Bush of 2016; inevitable, beloved of the money people and the conservative intellectual classuntil hes not.

Win against Trump in the Republican primary? Remains to be seen. Win against Biden? The Dems must be pretty worried about that if they are spending so much time trying to knock him down now.

Theyre going to have to start making up lies about DeSantis. Because these truth bombs trying to paint him in a negative light are weak AF.

              I agree

He has to beat trump first

Trump will frame the argument and the democrats will watch and pour gas on the fire

              Its called politics

Anybody see Kanye West today? Went full bat feces crazy on Alex Jones show. (I dont watch that show, it was all over Twitter).

                Heres a taste:

                [link=https://twitter.com/realsaavedra/status/1598416479112032256?s=46&t=Gm5MOsmnY2Wmv-XFgFDfEA]https://twitter.com/reals…Gm5MOsmnY2Wmv-XFgFDfEA[/link]

Hopefully Trump calling Kanye a friend a week ago and having him over for dinner will be the nail in the coffin of Trumps political career.

Not at all. In fact I already anticipated the question and have observed “both sides” attacking DeSantis. That usually happens when people are afraid. Fine with me because he’s not a candidate I would vote for. I just think any attack from the Dems shows how fearful they are of putting up Biden against anyone. I don’t think they have to worry about Trump….

              Agree

I do however think a lot of this initial stuff is from the trump side

Trump knows desantis better than most

And of course the democrats will just fuel the fire

T[link=https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/27/books/review/ron-desantis-book.html]he New York Times[/link] has, not surprisingly, given Ron DeSantis’ memoir a less-than-positive review:
[blockquote] [i]As governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis has been casting himself as a Trump-like pugilist. But the overall sense you get from reading his new memoir is that of the mechanical try-hard someone who has expended a lot of effort studying which way the wind is blowing in the Republican Party and is learning how to comport himself accordingly.[/i]
                [i]
                [/i]
[i]Not that he admits any of this, peppering The Courage to Be Free with frequent eruptions about the legacy media and runaway wokeness. But all the culture war Mad Libs cant distract from the dull coldness at this books core.[/i]

                [i]
                [/i]
[i]For the most part, The Courage to Be Free is courageously free of anything that resembles charisma, or a discernible sense of humor. While his first book was weird and esoteric enough to have obviously been written by a human, this one reads like a politicians memoir churned out by ChatGPT.[/i]
                [/blockquote]

DeSantis and any Republican need the “grievance vote.”

Funny, helping Americans used to be cast as enslaving Americans and making them lazy, as in “getting free stuff,” now helping and even neutral policies for some Americans is being “woke.” The grievances being someone is getting more than they or they have to place nice with LGBTQ people.

    Maybe “DeSanctimonious” didn’t brand well.

Roger Stone trying out “Lil’ Ron”

Which is funny because I wouldn’t guess Roger Stone is much taller.  Also it’s pretty lame because everyone knows it’s already little Marco Rubio.
