Yeah, “they’ve” been fighting for 200 years but ISIS was only born due to our invasion of Iraq. We now have President Pontius Pilate in our Pottery Barn mess.

“I broke it but it’s your job to clean up the mess I made.”

The Kurds biggest mistake is they didn’t send a flattering love letter as Kim Jung-un did telling Trump he’s wonderful & would he please build a Trump tower or two in their land. Had they done that we’d still be there.

You think we will be immune now? By running away ISIS will leave us alone? Like the other times we ran away & the terrorists then left us alone? Like they did at both attacks on the World Trade Center?

I think you’re projecting your own taste for American soldiers’ blood. Not dissimilar to Wallace’s willingness to risk the lives of dozens of American soldiers as a “tripwire.”

No

I think you are afraid of the fact that trump represents a disruption of NATO and other institutions

And in that context you are supporting a transfer of influence and leadership from the USA to Russia

That is whats happening and its trump and his supporters that own this

This is what disruption means

How is this a something you are pointing to the left on?  Congress (nearly everyone else except for Turkey, Russia, Syria, Iran) has this dead nuts pegged as a bad idea.  The Kurds fought ISIS and captured ISIS for/with the US.

I watched the Chris Wallace thing and I think the overall point is would Turkey go after those US forces or try and come into a US not fly zone?  I’m not the POTUS and I think that’s a hard question to deal with.  On the ground in theory the 24 guys vs 15000 get killed.  We have complete air superiority and can do so with drones let alone fighter pilots.  I think it would be pretty nuts for Erdogan to attack the US military.

I think one step is removal of Turkey from NATO.  They are no partner.

Uh, no. That was the Right-wing’s excuse for starting the Iraq War under false pretenses. Remember, Iraq never attacked us in 2001, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan did. And thanks to your adventurism you created ISIS, an organization that had not existed before your invasion.

Unfortunately, since you guys broke all the china in the Pottery Barn in Iraq, that leaves us to clean up your messes. You can’t walk away just because you don’t want to clean up your mess.

Nonsense. I didn’t vote for Bush and neither did a great deal of the people who voted for Trump. I voted in large part for the platform of withdrawal from the ME. Trump’s been saying for about two decades that entry into that hellpit was a disastrous mistake.

If people want us to rain missiles and bombs on certain forces, I’m skeptical bit willing to hear them out and have my mind changed. But no more American lives should be spent there.

The question is were you of age to have voted for Bush in the 1st place.

2nd, you have no data to show those who voted for TRump had not voted for Bush and supported the Iraq War.

Where was the vote for withdrawl in the Mideast. TRump spoke out of both sides of his mouth when it came to the Mideast. He supported Bush and his invasion of Iraq. Or didn’t you know that?

No one is proposing that we “rain” missiles and bombs on anyone there although there were a lot of careless commentary on right-wing media in the past about making certain areas of the Middle East into glass.

OMFG! Even the Editorial Board on WSJ is criticizing Trumps turntail!

Snow in July!

[link=https://www.wsj.com/articles/trumps-syria-mess-11571095091?mod=hp_opin_pos_1]https://www.wsj.com/articles/trumps-syria-mess-11571095091[/link]

What a fiasco. Foreign-policy blunders often take months or years to reveal their damaging consequences, but the harm from President Trumps abrupt withdrawal of U.S. forces from northern Syria is playing out almost in real time.

Wouldnt it have been easier simply to tell Mr. Erdogan, on that famous phone call two Sundays ago, that the U.S. wouldnt tolerate a Turkish invasion against the Kurds and would use air power to stop it? Mr. Erdogan would have had to back down and continue negotiating a Syrian safe zone with the Kurds and the U.S.

Mr. Trump is also making matters worse with his unserious justifications. After defeating 100% of the ISIS Caliphate, I largely moved our troops out of Syria. Let Syria and Assad protect the Kurds and fight Turkey for their own land, he tweeted Monday. Anyone who wants to assist Syria in protecting the Kurds is good with me, whether it is Russia, China, or Napoleon Bonaparte. I hope they all do great, we are 7,000 miles away!

We suppose the Napoleon line was a joke, but the world is laughing at an American President. Mr. Trump was able to project an image of strength in his early days as he prosecuted the war against ISIS and used force to impose a cost on Mr. Assad for using chemical weapons. But that image has faded as he has indulged his inner Rand Paul and claims at every opportunity that the main goal of his foreign policy is to put an end to endless wars.
This is simple-minded isolationism, and its a message to the worlds rogues that a U.S. President has little interest in engaging on behalf of American allies or interests. Friends like Israel and Saudi Arabia are quietly dismayed, while Iran, Russia and Hezbollah cant believe Mr. Trump has so glibly abandoned U.S. commitments and military partners.

Trump Caves Completely to Erdogan
The cease-fire agreement reached with Turkey by Vice President Mike Pence amounts to a near-total victory for Turkeys president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who gains territory, pays little in penalties and appears to have outmaneuvered President Trump, the [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/17/world/middleeast/trump-pence-syria-turkey-ceasefire.html]New York Times[/link] reports.

The best that can be said for the agreement is that it may stop the killing in the Kurdish enclave in northern Syria. But the cost for Kurds, longtime American allies in the fight against the Islamic State, is severe: Even Pentagon officials were mystified about where tens of thousands of displaced Kurds would go, as they moved south from the Turkey-Syria border as required by the deal if they agree to go at all.

And the cost to American influence, while hard to quantify, could be frightfully high.

“My reaction is that those kinds of phrases have the darkest rhymes in world history.

We don’t talk about cleaning out people, especially when there is an ethnic minority that has faced atrocities and appears to be facing crimes against humanity and atrocities, perhaps beginning right now.

Look, the security concerns of Turkey can be taken seriously without green-lighting the kind of thing that this president has allowed.

But the real consequence of this isn’t just what’s happening to Kurds or what’s happening in Syria. It’s what’s happening to the United States of America, because when American presidents — when an American president talks like that, when an American president pulls the rug out from under people who trusted us with their lives, that’s going to have implications for American interests all over the world.

Any place in the world where we need someone to trust us, to go out on a limb, to fight alongside our troops, it’s going to be harder. And that could last for decades and will make America less safe.

~Pete Buttigieg responding to President Trump’s suggestion that Turkey is finding the “ultimate solution” by gettings the Kurds “cleaned out.”

Will Trump Get a Baghdadi Bounce?
[link=https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2019-10-28/can-donald-trump-capitalize-on-the-baghdadi-raid]Jonathan Bernstein[/link]: Trumps extended remarks on Sunday may well have precluded that possibility. By comparing himself to previous presidents in a partisan way, Trump made it more likely that viewers would react along party lines, and that Democrats who might otherwise have praised him will now be less likely to do so. Whats more, Trump as usual got the facts wrong. Especially when what he gets wrong is self-praise no, Trump didnt call for killing Osama bin Laden in a 2000 book the media is going to track it down and report it, thereby weakening the presidents intended message. It cant help either that he revealed more about the raid than professionals think was wise, or that his own policy may have made the mission more difficult.

That said, Trumps approval rating has recently fallen to the lower end of his average range over the past 18 months, which suggests that some voters who tend to support him have recently turned against him. It wouldnt be surprising if they flipped back after this.

Pompeo Stirs Furor Over Turkey Trip  Snubbing Erdogan
Secretary of State Michael Pompeo wont meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan or other government leaders when he visits Turkey, a highly unusual situation that U.S. officials chalked up to scheduling conflicts and Turkish officials considered an insult, [link=https://www.bloombergquint.com/politics/pompeo-won-t-meet-erdogan-or-other-officials-on-istanbul-visit]Bloomberg[/link] reports.

[link=https://news.yahoo.com/pompeo-turkey-fraught-visit-no-100444366.html]AFP[/link] reports a group of 20 to 30 Turks shouted Yankee go home! as the evangelical Christian Pompeo headed in for a meeting with the Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople the spiritual leader of the Greek Orthodox world to express his strong position on religious freedoms.

It only took until 40 days before the end of the Trump administration but …

The US is sanctioning Turkey over the S-400s (Russian military system)

Biden Preparing to Declare That Atrocities Against Armenia Were Genocide

The designation for the World War I-era killings would further fray U.S. relations with Turkey, but it is a risk the president appears willing to take to further human rights, officials said.

[link=http://rss.cnn.com/~r/rss/cnn_allpolitics/~3/G_5C3V9_OqI/index.html]President Biden calls  Erdogan about his plan to recognize Armenian genocide[/link]

Biden spoke by telephone with Erdoğan on Friday, his first conversation with the Turkish leader since taking office. The long period without communication had been interpreted as a sign Biden is placing less importance on the US relationship with Turkey going forward.
In a readout of the call, the White House said Biden “convey[ed] his interest in a constructive bilateral relationship with expanded areas of cooperation and effective management of disagreements.”

“I’ve spent a lot of time with him. He is an autocrat,” he told[link=https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/01/17/opinion/joe-biden-nytimes-interview.html] the New York Times editorial board in 2020[/link]. “He’s the president of Turkey and a lot more. What I think we should be doing is taking a very different approach to him now, making it clear that we support opposition leadership.”

… Turkey’s foreign minister said, “If the United States wants to worsen ties, the decision is theirs.”

Turkey Headed for a Runoff?
Recep Tayyip Erdogans share of votes in Turkeys presidential election fell to 49.9% with more than 92.7% of the ballot boxes opened, [link=https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-05-14/turkey-latest-erdogan-s-future-at-stake-in-a-sharply-split-election?srnd=politics-vp&sref=nXmOg68r&utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email]Bloomberg[/link] reports.

Incumbent Erdogans main challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu had 44.3% of the vote and Sinan Ogan, the third candidate in Sundays race, got 5.3%, Anadolu said. If results hold and no candidate wins more than half of the total ballots, Turkey will be headed for a runoff election. The top two contestants would face each other in the second round on May 28.

Sure would be nice for the US if Erdogan was off the scene and a slihtly more pro-western leaders too over.

is the other guy better than Erdogan?  Also i’m assuming Erdogan is the kind of guy who can just go find those 11000 votes because he’s owed them.

[/link]

Speaking [link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_xL26SMdFw]at a virtual event[/link], Blinken singled out Turkey as it undergoes talks with Russia for a second purchase of the S-400 anti-aircraft weapons system, saying it could be penalized under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).

“It’s also very important going forward that Turkey, and for that matter all U.S. allies and partners, avoid future purchases of Russian weaponry, including additional S-400s,” Blinken said.

“Any significant transactions with Russian defense entities, again, could be subject to the law, to CAATSA, and that’s separate from and in addition to the sanctions that have already been imposed,” he added.

[link=https://www.cbsnews.com/video/erdogan-defiant-about-acquiring-russian-missile-defense-system/]Erdoğan defiant about acquiring Russian missile defense system

[/link]
President Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey still intended to buy a second batch of S-400 missile defense systems from Russia, a move that could deepen a rift with NATO ally Washington and trigger fresh U.S. sanctions.

“In the future, nobody will be able to interfere in terms of what kind of defense systems we acquire, from which country at what level,” Erdogan said in an interview aired on Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan at CBS News on Sunday.

“Nobody can interfere with that. We are the only ones to make such decisions.”

T[link=https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-59023465]urkey moves to throw out US and nine other envoys[/link]
Addressing a crowd in Eskisehir on Saturday, Mr Erdogan said the ambassadors “cannot dare to come to the Turkish foreign ministry and give orders”.

He said: “I gave the necessary order to our foreign minister and said what must be done. These 10 ambassadors must be declared persona non grata at once. You will sort it out immediately.”

However, what will happen now remains unclear.

Kabas used traditional Turkish proverbs to make references to Erdogan without actually giving the presidents name.

A crowned head gets wiser, but we see that it is not true, she said in reference to Erdogans nearly 20 years in power since becoming prime minister and then president.

She then said: When a cattle enters a palace, he will not be a king, but that palace becomes a barn. Kabas later posted her comments on Twitter to her 900,000 followers.

that’s fine but block them from routing via Turkey to anywhere else.  Frankly block them long term from vacationing anywhere.

The Turkish leader explained his opposition by citing Sweden and other Scandinavian countries alleged support for Kurdish militants and others whom Turkey considers to be terrorists.

He said he also did not want to repeat Turkey’s past mistake from when it agreed to readmit Greece into NATO’s military wing in 1980. He claimed the action had allowed Greece to take an attitude against Turkey by taking NATO behind it.”

Erdogan did not say outright that he would block any accession attempt the two Nordic nations might make, but NATO takes all its decisions by consensus, meaning that each of the 30 member countries has a potential veto over who can join.
