Neuro Discussion Fellowship Year 2021-2021
Posted by dradipooja_876 on September 5, 2019 at 11:08 amThoughts from coresident who interviewed and matched for Neuroradiology Fellowships in June 2019
This year was 201 Applicants with 270 spots
Typically 80 percent of applicants match to top 2 choices in neuroradiology
Many top programs go unfilled each year
Usually you interview with 3 to 7 other people on each date. There are multiple dates.
Most people applied only for one year programs
Most programs do not allow moonlighting.
Salaries are pretty similar 60k to 90k.
Most programs offer optional cerebral angiogram, almost none have mandatory home neuro IR call, average program makes you work a Saturday and Sunday every 3 to 4 weeks. Less than half offer therapeutic spine interventions. A few programs have PET/MRI. Most programs offer about one month of electives. There is a wide range in daily work hours.

Is there a day of the week that neuro fellowships tend to interview on?

Bump.
Now that ERAS has released applications can people begin posting interview invites as they are sent out?
-
MIR
Mayo
Northwestern
UChicago
Cleveland Clinic
Stanford
UPenn -
Indiana and Louisville are out too.
You all have just sent the basic ERAS application, correct? Ive seen multiple sites with their personal applications on them, and assumed that was from the pre-ERAS days, but now I’m second guessing myself and wondering if I should have filled those out too -
I just sent out the eras application. I think thats all we need to do.
-
Only one day they sent out right? Unfortunately cant make that day
-
UChicago had interviews last Thursday and today. I dont know if theyre doing batch invites and rounds of interviews or how its structured.
-
MGH and Stanford have also both released interviews.
For MGH, ERAS did not email me, however I noticed a message when I logged into ERAS. Be sure to check there, as well! -

University of Michigan and Penn went out this week too

Do programs normally broadcast how many spots they have? Some I’ve noticed don’t list it on their website (Hopkins, BWH)
-
I assume they will in the interview. But if a website doesnt say it, I look at the list of neurorads fellowships on FREIDA and the number is listed there for most places. For your examples it shows Brigham has 7 spots and JH has 11.
-
Is it safe to say programs send all invites out at once and if we haven’t heard from a program on this list we won’t be getting an interview?
-
It would probably depend on the program – so no, not safe to say.
-
has anyone heard from the University of Minnesota or Loyola?
-
I didn’t apply to Minnesota or Loyola but haven’t heard anything about them through the grapevine. Another round of Cleveland Clinic went out. Also Beaumont and Pitt are out.
-
Ok thank you for your response.
I’ve heard from most of the other midwest programs I applied to, but not those yet. -
does anyone know of programs that are filling positions with internal candidates?
-
Also out and not mentioned: Emory, UAB, UT Southwestern, UT Houston, UTMB, Baylor and Arizona.
-
has anyone received a rejection for an interview? I’m still waiting to hear back from a handful of programs, but none of them have rejected me yet.
I’ve sent an email to the program coordinator of a program I was interested in, but no response. -

I applied to 20, have 10 interviews, and have been rejected by 2. Of the remaining 8, 4 of them have been listed on this forum as having extended invites, so I’m just assuming I’m out. Of the remaining 4, I have real interest in 2 but haven’t contacted them yet. Also, to answer your previous question; 2 of the programs I have interviewed with thus far are filling 1 spot each internally.
-
Thanks for responding. I applied to 15 programs (due to specific geography requirements). I have heard back from 11.
2 of the programs I haven’t heard back from are reach programs. -
I am wondering if I should start to send out emails to programs I haven’t heard from.
-
Worst that can happen is they say no. I did that for residency and got at least one extra interview out of it.
But if you’ve got 11 interviews you’ll almost certainly match somewhere. I wouldn’t sweat it too much, especially if you’ve got a solid top 3 already – according to the most recent data from the NRMP (2020 appointment year, so current fellows), neurorads applicants respectively matched into their 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices 76.3%, 12.8% and 3.3% of the time. Those numbers are probably more favorable if your top 3 are some of the 50%+ of programs who don’t typically fill all their spots.
-
I’ve applied to 18, got 11, but know 6 out of the other 7 have gone out for sure. Got one outright rejection (Hopkins) which I guess was a reach anyways. The other 5 who knows. I hate when programs ghost, just send rejections.

Anyone have any insight into the TX programs, specifically Houston and Dallas. Would ultimately like to end up in one of these cities, probably Houston (or Austin). Obviously UTSW has the “best” name, but if Houston is the goal would it make more sense to go to UTH or Baylor. Also, it’s hard to distinguish big differences between the two Houston programs – which is generally better regarded for training/chiller/etc. Thanks in advance if anyone has any insight.
-
I’ve interviewed at 2/3 of those programs – I can let you know more once I’ve completed the third.
Also, anybody on here still getting interview invites? I thought I might be done a couple weeks back but I got one last Wednesday.
-
I havent gotten anything else since early January ish.
-
Would anyone be interested in discussing some thoughts/reviews of programs as we approach the end of the month? I feel like its tough to gauge an interview day just on 1 short online visit, and perhaps having others share their thoughts may help.
Just a thought. -

Thanks that’d be great. Always nice to hear someone else perspective. The last one i got was in the middle of January.
-
Everyone almost done with interviews? Any places you guys really liked or didnt like? Would anyone be interested in sharing some PMs about programs?
-
Pretty much done with interviews; I ended up declining a few and only went on four total (which obviously will comprise my rank list lol). I interviewed with Washu/Brigham/Barrow/Utah, would be happy to discuss in a PM tho
-
We did it! How did everyone do?
Felt lucky to match at a place I wanted!
-
Now that the match is over, any thoughts on competitiveness for neuro? Most people seem to match into their top 1-2 in the past, I assume it is similar but would like to hear any thoughts. Also if anyone has thoughts on any of the following programs it would be much appreciated – Penn, Duke, Hopkins, Brigham, Emory. Feel free to PM as well.

I will be interested to see the NRMP data on this for our appointment year. Last year, 67.1% of people got their top choice. The year before, it was 76.3%. I suspect a bounceback since 240/244 people matched overall.
I got my top possible choice though (overall, not just of the places I interviewed), so I’m good. -
NRMP data is available on their website. After logging in to the R3 system, go to option/report.
2021 Match (2022 appointment) for Neuroradiology info:
Programs: 84
Filled programs: 48/84 (57.8%)
Positions: 292
Filled positions: 241/292 (82.5%)
Total applicants: 244
Applicants who didn’t match: 4 -
Overall my impression is that it was more competitive this year. I am not coming from a particularly competitive program, and my step 1 scores are not super competitive. I matched my second choice. However, I got multiple rejections from more competitive programs (if I received interviews to all of the places I applied to, the place I wound up matching at would have been my 4th or 5th overall choice).
