Hunter Biden announces he is under federal investigation for “tax affairs.”

(Leaving his laptop full of incriminating child porn in a repair shop I never could find credible.   But tax evasion? yeah… that tracks)

The released a statement noting he used tax professionals. If thats correct I would think this fall on the CPA.

Dudes…Hunter is shady.  Nepotism at BEST.   The only question was whether “the big man” was involved.

Frankly, I hope Republicans drop all that nonsense.  The public is tired of this crap from both sides and I’d rather have Joe’s barely breathing body than Kamala.

If you look through your accountants ‘engagement letter’, they typically make clear that unless they file your taxes based on a complete audit of your books, they are not liable for your returns. They advise you, but in the end it is the taxpayer who bears the criminal liability from filing returns.

The CPA fills out your taxes.  Even if the payer has additional liabilities, I’m sure the CPA is going to face the ire of the IRS.

If it was a Trump kid Dan would be screaming for a special prosecutor and he would be claiming kid has all the responsibility. Funny this story was not even covered by left outlets along w big tech. The media that did cover it the left media, talking pundits, and big tech all scoffed at the story along w habitual liar Schiff and Chris Murphy were on TV claiming it was Russia.

I think you got that backwards. Since day one, you lefties have been going after Orange Mans kids with every conspiracy and concoction you can think of. Not to mention, the sexist and anti-sematic comments towards Ivana. Liberal Women! The next the declines of Razors and Dial Soap. You know…. Karma’s a bitch… and she’s got her mother with her. See ya in court, C-Span and a new Impeachment trial right after Eric Swalwell’s trial and imprisonment. Shameful… Disgraceful or just plane ignorant and stupid? He falsifies Trumps Kids on meeting a Russian Spy yet… he’s been banging a Chinese Spy. in the words of Homer Simpson.. “Doh” Bye Bye Eric.

You’ve had 4 years to go after Trumps Kids… and still couldn’t find anything or… even do anything. Bring it on. The better drama show is about to start.

I’m not sure what this even means.  There haven’t been any efforts to go after the Trump children.  The House never opened investigations into their activities. They weren’t called as witnesses.

And obviously the Trump DOJ didn’t go after them.

I suppose it could be accurate to use the present tense, “you have 4 years to go after Trump’s kids,” with the clock starting on Jan 20.  But I am highly doubtful that Biden will want his DOJ seeming politicized as it comes to the kids.  And I am equally doubtful that Pelosi will want to derail what limited Biden legislative agenda there is by holding hearings on what Eric was doing.

The state AGs and, maybe the independent FBI field offices, will run the lead on any criminal investigations of the Trump kids.

And hopefully, the field offices will also be allowed to remain independent as they look into Hunter Biden.

If someone can’t admit that what Hunter did during his dads vice-presidency was a series of corrupt transactions, I can’t take anything further they say about corruption seriously. While due to the configuration of international and domestic law and statute of limitations issues, there may not be a way to address them in a court, they are nevertheless corrupt.

I will grant you the “corrupt” if you also then acknowledge that such “corruption”  (trading on a family name and/or proximity to power in exchange for $$) is very common  to the point of near ubiquity.

Yes, Hunter’s Biden’s choice is particularly brash. And were he and not his father the politician it *should* be a political death sentence.

If Hunter Biden is found through an open and fair investigation to have undertake criminal conduct, then he should punished appropriately.  And the President should take no actions to shield him from either punishment or investigation.

As you asked regarding prosecuting Trump post Inauguration about exactly what laws did he break to be prosecuted for, the same question should be asked regarding the finding of guilt for Hunter based exactly on what laws were broken?

If trading on family names is worthy of legal prosecution and conviction, Trump’s children certainly belong in that deserve to be prosecuted group as well as untold hundreds or thousands of individuals just in USA alone, yes? Except, is it a law for which one can be prosecuted and convicted?

I don’t know what they found about Hunter.  It’s like a story when the Times dug into how Trump org undervalued real estate, and used shell companies to over bill his father real estate.  All I said was the press release made note that he used tax professionals.

Trump org on that other hand has a well documented history of abuse.

Daddy can give him pretty much anything. He appears to be real good at being a Subject Matter Expert on Jobs he has no skills at. Oh wait… Sex Crimes and Drug Trafficking. That will work. He’s good at that. Maybe??? Cyber Crimes division? Nope that won’t work.. he keeps forgetting about his laptops.

DOJ investigating lobbying company tied to Burisma

“four people familiar with the matter said officials are looking into Blue Star Strategies, which took on Burisma as a client when Hunter Biden still served on the board. ”

There is no information that ties Hunter Biden himself to the investigation, and Politico noted that Blue Star co-founder Karen Tramontano said that the presidents son did not direct any of the firms work for Burisma.
Politico reported that the Delaware U.S. Attorneys Office is involved in the probe into Blue Star, as are lawyers with the Justice Departments National Security Division. ”

An analysis for the FT by the media monitoring company Critical Mention shows Hunter Biden has been mentioned on Fox News nearly 9,000 times over the past two years. That is nearly double the number of mentions for Hillary Clinton, a previous focus of attack for the conservative news channel.

Federal agents see chargeable tax, gun-purchase case against Hunter Biden

Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, a Trump appointee, must decide whether to charge the son of the current president
Federal agents investigating President Bidens son Hunter have gathered what they believe is sufficient evidence to charge him with tax crimes and a false statement related to a gun purchase, according to people familiar with the case. The next step is for the U.S. Attorney in Delaware, a Trump administration holdover, to decide on whether to file such charges, these people said.

The [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/podcasts/post-reports/the-story-of-hunter-bidens-dealings-in-ukraine/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_10&itid=lk_inline_manual_4]investigation into Hunter Biden[/link] began in 2018, and became a central focus for then-president Donald Trump during his unsuccessful 2020 reelection effort. Initially, the investigation centered around Hunter Bidens finances related to [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/the-gas-tycoon-and-the-vice-presidents-son-the-story-of-hunter-bidens-foray-in-ukraine/2019/09/28/1aadff70-dfd9-11e9-8fd3-d943b4ed57e0_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_4]overseas business ties and consulting work[/link]. Over time, investigators with multiple agencies focused closely on whether he did not report all of his income, and whether he lied on gun purchase paperwork in 2018, according to the people familiar with the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing case.

Agents determined months ago they had assembled a viable criminal case against the younger Biden. But it is ultimately up to prosecutors at the Justice Department, not agents, to decide whether to file charges in cases where prosecutors believe the evidence is strong enough to lead to a likely conviction at trial.

Like anyone applying for a gun permit is going to admit to drug use

And how they can prove a lie to that questions I dont know

I am by no means an attorney, but I read the question on the gun purchase form. It doesnt read have you been convicted of xyz… It asks something different, and to prove guilt in that situation he likely would have had to undergo a positive drug test by the gun seller at the time of purchase.

David Frum-
Another Flop From GOP Productions
The coming House hearings on Hunter Biden will be a repeat dose of Whitewater delusion: a Republican circus act that wont impress voters.

The most urgent of those warning signs is Republicans urge to base their program for the next Congress on an investigation of President Joe Bidens son Hunter. On November 18, the next chair of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer of Kentucky, and his colleague due to chair the House Judiciary Committee, Jim Jordan of Ohio, [link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qK5U7iMY8os]held[/link] a press conference to offer their theory of what they would find: corrupt business dealings that implicate the president himself.

Why Republicans would want to believe this holds little mystery. From 2017 to 2021, Republicans supported and defended a strikingly corrupt president whose children disregarded nepotism rules to enrich themselves and their businesses. The administration [link=https://fortune.com/2016/12/05/ivanka-trump-donald-trump-japan-shinzo-abe/]opened[/link] with a special favor from the government of Japan to Donald Trumps daughter and [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/10/us/jared-kushner-saudi-investment-fund.html]closed[/link] with a $2 billion investment by the government of Saudi Arabia for the presidents son-in-lawdespite written warnings from the Saudi governments outside advisers about excessive fees, inexperienced management, and operations that were unsatisfactory in all aspects.
..

But Republicans are more and more isolated in their ideological information networks and seem even less connected to mainstream America today than they were a generation ago. They so passionately believe the stories they hear that they forget who confected those stories: themselves.

What Republicans want instead is an excuse for their enabling of Trump. They yearn to spread their fantasy narrative that Bidens attempts to be a supportive father to an errant son are the moral equivalent of the Trump familys looting of the U.S. government. Fantasies dont survive contact with reality, including the democratic reality of elections.

Unfortunately, fantasies can be generated faster than reality can puncture them. So off we go with a repeat of an old showwritten, directed, and performed by a production company oblivious that it is chasing box-office success by remaking a three-decade-old flop.

Yes. As discussed upthread, trading on family name is ubiquitous in American politics.    Getting paced on a board of directors because your father is a senator or being invited as a non-working partner in a firm getting big big $$ b/c your mother is Sec of the Interior business as usual.

Oh you must have missed it!

FBI had the Hunter Biden laptop in 19 & knew it was real. The FBI held weekly meetings with Big Tech about disinformation. Roth of Twitter said they mentioned H. Biden story and they were warned it was Russian disinformation. NY Posts Miranda Devine goes to publish. Story is censored with the help of twitter lawyer & former FBI lawyer Jim Baker.

So not only was the Biden campaign telling Twitter to censor stuff, but the FBI (who knew that the laptop was real) told Twitter and Facebook that there was Russian hacking information about Hunter Biden that was going to come out and should be censored.

A.k.a., the FBI knew the hunter Biden laptop story coming out right before the election would be damaging to their preferred presidential candidate, and so they lied and said it was fake Russian shit so that news organizations would censor it.

But you dont care because if its your team. You dont care if they interfere with our elections if its to your benefit.

Yeah. Taibbi got weird. During the financial crisis I though his reporting was good and I liked to read his stuff. Now I find it hard to believe hes not a Russian asset. He worked in Russia, and may have had an interesting history there. He seems to carry water for Putin just like Elon has. His whole Twitter files with Elon is a shambles.

Haha. Figured Id hear from DR. Its reality DR. Again, Im not saying there isnt something there. Just that there is so much corruption nobody cares on a political level. Its a waste of time to spend any energy looking into.

MAGA and MAGA adjacent may want to see the House investigate Hunter. The majority of the electorate does not, even if they know he is corrupt. Why? There are a lot more important things to do. Any wasted time will come back to haunt the Republicans just like it did in these midterms.

Now I’m pretty sure we can agree that if we get away from petty partisan antics like this, the Dems will lose on issues relating to the economy and crime, just like they did in very blue NY State. Much better approach because it moves us all to the middle.
Hunter Biden Adopts New Aggressive Legal Strategy, Asks for Probes Into Trump Allies
[link=https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/joe-biden/hunter-biden-asks-criminal-probe-trump-allies-laptop-rcna68703]NBC News[/link]

Lawyers for Hunter Biden sent letters Wednesday requesting investigations into allies of former President Donald Trump who they say trafficked in stolen information from his laptop a dramatic shift in strategy for the presidents son after years of GOP attacks.

Information from the laptop has raised questions about Bidens finances, which have been under investigation by federal prosecutors in Delaware since 2018. Theyve also been the source of several salacious stories from conservative media outlets, many focused on his drug use.
[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/02/01/hunter-biden-lawyers-urge-investigation-of-critics/]Washington Post[/link]: Hunter Bidens lawyers, in newly aggressive strategy, target his critics.

The string of letters, which included criminal referrals and cease-and-desist missives aimed at critics and detractors, marked the start of a new and far more hard-hitting phase for the presidents son just as House Republicans prepare their own investigations into him.

Abbe Lowell, a recently hired lawyer whom Biden enlisted about a month ago, sent lengthy letters to the Justice Department and Delawares attorney general requesting investigations into several key players who were involved in disseminating data from a laptop that Biden is said to have dropped off at a repair shop in Wilmington, Del.

Bryan M. Sullivan, another lawyer now representing Biden, sent a separate communication to Carlson and Fox News demanding that they correct falsehoods from his recent show or risk a possible defamation lawsuit.

And in another letter, Lowell wrote to the Internal Revenue Service challenging the nonprofit status of Marco Polo, a group that is run by conservative activist Garrett M. Ziegler. Lowell provided 36 pages as evidence that the group is engaging in political activity in violation of its nonprofit status.
Hunter Biden Resists First Records Request
Hunter Bidens legal team on Thursday defied a records request from House Republicans, calling their investigation into his business dealings an expansive and invasive quest to turn President Bidens son into a political weapon.

In a letter to the House Oversight Committee, Mr. Bidens lawyer Abbe Lowell questioned the legitimacy of the Republican-led inquiry into the president and his family, arguing that the investigation lacked a valid legislative purpose. Mr. Lowell repeatedly referred to the younger Mr. Biden as a private citizen and said the information sought by the House panel is precisely what is prohibited by the Supreme Court.’

Giving up on the pretense. James Comer gives away the game as his thoughts about investigating Trump family influence peddling “evolve”

Jan 15, 2023: [link=https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2023/01/15/comer-to-probe-trump.cnn]GOP Oversight Chair vows to probe Trump influence peddling  –

[/link]

The influence peddling with respect to the Trump administration will be a part of our overall investigation because both Democrats and Republicans have complained about this with the previous two administrations.
…..

Then, an NYT interview comes out a few days ago:

[link=https://news.yahoo.com/comer-republicans-investigative-chief-embraces-120120578.html]Comer, Republicans Investigative Chief, Embraces Role of Biden Antagonist

[/link]

Yet it is clear his main goal is to uncover wrongdoing by Biden and his family. He has subpoenaed the bank records of Hunter Bidens associates and recently obtained access to financial records about Biden family business transactions.

Mr. Comer indicated he had no interest in the former presidents finances. While it did not rule out looking at Mr. Kushners business dealings, at some point, when the reporter suggested it might be politically unsustainable for him to investigate Mr. Trumps son-in-law, he took a long pause and then replied, I dont disagree with what you said.

I think that were going to be able to trace the money back to the sources, the sources in China, the sources in Ukraine and the sources in Russia, and hopefully, we can get an answer for what did the Biden family do to receive this much money, Comer said.
[link=https://news.yahoo.com/comer-republicans-investigative-chief-embraces-120120578.html]

[/link]Legal Analyst Dan Abrams summarizes:
[link=https://www.newsnationnow.com/danabramslive/abrams-comer-almost-admits-hunter-biden-probe-is-pure-politics/]Comer *almost* admits Biden probe is pure politics[/link]
… if thats the purpose, theres actually more evidence today of influence peddling when it comes to very lucrative deals with foreign entities that benefited Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. Specifically, the Chinese government seems to have fast-tracked trademarks Ivanka applied for after Trump took office. She applied for about 17 of them and received them quickly in 2017.

{Laundry list of Trump and family peddling from Jared to Ivanka to Don to patents to investments to loans etc etc etc}

But now hes coming clean, and hes admitting theres no investigation of Trump or Kushner coming, which can only lead to the conclusion that this isnt really about rooting out and or exposing influence peddling at the highest levels.

Comer deserves credit for his candor. Its rare that someone in his position will admit that an investigation is politically driven. And now, its time for the rest of us to stop pretending, as well.

[link=https://thehill.com/homenews/house/3917317-hunter-biden-probes-put-gop-under-some-pressure/]Hunter Biden probes put GOP under some pressure[/link]

An NBC News poll in January showed that 55 percent of Americans including a majority of independents said they believe Republicans will spend too much time investigating President [link=https://thehill.com/people/joe-biden/]Joe Biden [/link]and not enough time on other priorities.

The same poll revealed that 63 percent of those surveyed say they had little to no confidence that Congress will conduct a fair and impartial investigation into Biden and his administration.
A Pew Research Center poll out that same month showed that 65 percent are concerned that Republican lawmakers will focus too much on Biden administration investigations, including four in 10 Republicans.

Republican strategist Doug Heye, who also served as a senior House aide, added that Republicans should be mindful of former President Trump and his family members while the investigations into Biden continue.

Theres an entire family named Trump that used the Trump White House to go cha-ching, Heye said. So, at best, this muddies waters politically.

However, I hope this “1st time” is not the only one there is enough evidence to go to trial. In the scheme of things people don’t care that much about Trump, $130K and a porn star. It would be a worse crime if this got played off as a political stunt just like the Hunter stuff. One has to be very careful with owners of great political capitol, even if one is right in the end.

Well you left some things out. The agent’s claim involves written documents including emails. He is asking for protection because of the work documents which hold some confidentiality. So this apparently is not just some verbal claim.

Second his claims are not known yet until he gets immunity. The initial report is that the person that he claims their sworn testimony was false has not been identified. The initial reports was that it was a senior high ranking political appointed official. Since then there are reports from sources it is Garland. Lastly, you do not know Garland so let it play out. It could very well be him.

Remember Garland is the guy that knew about the Biden papers and said nothing while he was appointing a special prosecutor on the Mar-a -lago fiasco. It only got out because CBS News had the story.

There’s a fascination with the Biden’s getting Ukrainian or Chinese money.  If there’s some wrong doing they should face the DoJ.  But so far it’s been farts in the wind.  Like where’s big bad Gymbo Jordan.  I thought he was going to uncover all the corruption.  When Trump’s taxes came out didn’t it say Trump had a bunch of foreign bank accounts including China.  Oddly that story seemed to go away quickly.
