President Trump said some time ago that he believes his personal finances should be off limits to investigators. In an interview with the Times in July, 2017, he asserted that if Robert Mueller, the special counsel, sought to investigate the Trump familys business dealings he would be crossing a red line. When, later that year, several news reports suggested that Mueller had subpoenaed Deutsche Bank for records relating to Trumps businesses, the President reportedly told members of his staff that he wanted to fire Mueller in response.
It was never confirmed whether Mueller had actually subpoenaed Deutsche Bank, but the Presidents aversion to the scrutiny of his business interests caught the attention of Representative Adam Schiff, who will become the chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence next year. On a recent weekend, at a busy restaurant in downtown Burbank, in the heart of his congressional district, Schiff talked about his plans for conducting an investigation that will be parallel to Muellers, probing Trumps connections to Russia, Saudi Arabia, and other places around the world.
As Schiff described his approach, it became clear that he wasnt just planning to cross Trumps red linehe intended to obliterate it.

There is very little room for any legislation passing in the congress. Maybe a little something on prescription drugs, maybe something on infrastructure (but doubtful b/c of arguments over how to pay for it).
The House could pass medicare for all. The House could pass a $15 minimum wage. The House could fix DACA easily. The House could pass climate legislation. … none of that is going anywhere. Mitch will block it. Trump won’t sign it.
The one thing the House can do independently of Trump and the GOP Senate is undertake its necessary role in oversight. This is the most corrupt administration since Grant… from the top down.
Showing the American people that instead of draining it Trump has made the “swamp” an ATM for him and his cronies is an important job to do.-
Ya those darn checks and balances. So evil!
I don’t disagree about the corruption although I’m sure the media isn’t helping. If Obama did these same things it would not be covered the same way. Again not condoning just stating.
-
I am all in favor of those checks and balances. You’re the one who suggested that House Dems should pass legislation instead of investigating Trump.
I am just laying out the reality of the situation.-

Double that, Obama was in 8 years and did nothing like Trump’s corruption. The argument “had Obama done” is an empty argument without meaning. But had Obama done what Trump has been and is doing, the Republicans would have been howling bloody blue murder. They were frustrated in not finding anything on Obama, something impeachable would have been eagerly taken.

If I was Pelosi I would lead on two fronts.
Full speed ahead on investigating the Trump administration on every front, with an emphasis on corruption.
Pass the following legislation (and give Mitch the choice of doing nothing)
1) Protect the Mueller probe
2) Fix the ACA by restoring the individual mandate and re-empahsising protection for pre-existing conditions and shoring up the exchanges (couple this to prescription drug fix just to turn up the heat a bit more)
3) Pass an infrastructure bill that funds itself by negating the entirety of the GOP tax bill
4) Pass a stand-alone DACA fix.

So IR27, give examples of your left wing bias vs the neutral reading of the facts.
Lets say about Trumps threatened shutdown. Or the truth re Russian interference & who in the Administration never met with any Russians for anti-Clinton help. Or these past mid-terms. Or DACA. Or infrastructure spending. Or deficits and taxes. Or healthcare insurance & the ACA.
How would your preferred sites, say Breitbart or Fox spin the same stories vs a neutral truer viewpoint?

My bet is that none of the right-leaning posters will be able to make a cogent argument showing evidence of their POV and therefore will make no attempt other than repeating, “But CNN and MSNBC…” and “echo chamber.” It is typical of Right wing complaints, to raise the complaint without data or facts as if there was some sort of equivalency.

Cummings sends 51 letters to White House requesting compliance with document requests[/h1]
ep. [link=https://thehill.com/people/elijah-cummings-0]Elijah Cummings[/link] (D-Md.) on Tuesday issued 51 letters to the heads of various government agencies and White House and Trump Organization officials seeking documents on a series of congressional investigations.
The likely chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee made clear he intends to continue investigations into the Trump administration’s response to Hurricane Maria and handling of its family separation policy at the southern border, misconduct by top government officials and payments to the Trump Organization from foreign governments.
“These are documents that even the Republicans on the Oversight Committee at least at some point in time believed we needed to conduct effective oversight, but when the Trump Administration refused to comply fully, the Republicans would not issue a single subpoena,” Cummings [link=https://democrats-oversight.house.gov/news/press-releases/cummings-sends-51-letters-to-white-house-and-others-insisting-on-full-compliance]said in a statement[/link].
“As Democrats prepare to take the reins in Congress, we are insisting as a basic first step that the Trump Administration and others comply with these Republican requests,” he added.
The letters are not subpoenas, but provide an indication of the aggressive oversight Cummings plans to pursue when Democrats officially take the House majority in January.

In a letter to Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), Trump Organization attorney Alan Futerfas said the committees decision to hire Barry Berke as a legal consultant violates ethics rules because Berkes firm has long represented the Trump Organization. In the strongly worded letter, Futerfas demanded that Nadler fire Berke and that the chairman turn over Berkes communications with the Judiciary panel.
Your Special Oversight Counsel and long-time Kramer Levin partner and litigation co-Chair, Barry H. Berke, is ethically conflicted from representing or advising the Committee, the letter states, and demands “that the committee cease and desist from all probes.
Nadler did not respond for a request for comment.

[b]House Intel to publicly question Trump associate Felix Sater in March[/b]
The House Intelligence Committee plans to question Felix Sater, the longtime business associate of [link=https://thehill.com/people/donald-trump]President Trump[/link] involved in efforts to build a Trump property in Moscow, in a public hearing in March, committee Chairman [link=https://thehill.com/people/adam-schiff]Adam Schiff[/link] (D-Calif.) told reporters Thursday.
Schiff said the open hearing with Sater is scheduled for March 14 and would focus on the Trump Moscow discussions.
Sater, a Russian-born businessman who served as managing director for the New York-based real estate firm the Bayrock Group, worked with former Trump attorney Michael Cohen to move the real estate project forward, though it never came to fruition.
Schiff announced the hearing after a daylong closed-door testimony from Cohen, which was widely expected to focus on the Trump Moscow discussions. In November, Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to the House and Senate Intelligence committees about the extent to which the Moscow project was discussed within the Trump Organization. His testimony was part of a deal to cooperate in special counsel [link=https://thehill.com/people/robert-mueller]Robert Mueller[/link]s investigation.

[b]Democrats Start Broad Corruption Inquiry [/b]
[b][/b]
The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee delivered a flurry of document demands to the executive branch and the broader Trump world on Monday that detailed the breadth of the Democrats investigation into possible obstruction of justice, corruption and abuse of power by President Trump and his administration the [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/04/us/politics/obstruction-of-justice-jerrold-nadler-trump.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage]New York Times[/link] reports
In the two months since they took control of the House, Democrats have begun probing members of the presidents cabinet, his businesses, his campaign, his inaugural committee and his ties to key foreign powers, including Russia and its attempts to disrupt the 2016 presidential election. But Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York, the Judiciary Committee chairman, made clear on Monday that the new majority intends to train its attention on actions at the heart of Mr. Trumps norm-bending presidency actions that could conceivably form the basis of a future impeachment proceeding.

More interesting is what they’re looking for. It appears they’re publishing some or all of the request for info. It seems to be looking for documents relating to emoluments/presents/loans to the Trumpian sphere and mentions Russia, UAE, ,Qatar, Saudi Arabia.

Democrats are using their new control of congressional committees to investigate every aspect of President Trumps personal finances, businesses, and even his family, the filing by Trump claims. Instead of working with the President to pass bipartisan legislation that would actually benefit Americans, House Democrats are singularly obsessed with finding something they can use to damage the President politically.
The filing, in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, further escalates a clash between the White House and the Democratic-controlled House over congressional oversight.

From Tom Malinowski of NJ:
The Mueller Report is not just a story about what happened in 2016. Its a warning about what could happen again, and thus a call to action to protect our democracy. The report tells us Trump wasnt working for Russia (thankfully), but also that he wasnt, and isnt, working for America. Hes interested only in protecting himself, as DHS Secretary Nielsen found out when she urged action to secure the 2020 election.
its illegal for political candidates to share things like polling data and campaign strategy with independent political action groups (IEs) in the US. Yet apparently its perfectly legal to share that info with Russian spies to help them target our voters. The rules that prohibit coordination between political candidates and IEs should also apply to coordination with a foreign government or agent of a foreign government.
political candidates should have an affirmative legal duty to report to law enforcement any offer of help coming from a foreign government or that might be illegal, like offers of hacked emails. Just as banks are required to report suspicious transactions.
We should consider how to define more clearly that actions by presidents to influence or shut down investigations in which they have a personal interest as Trump repeatedly and blatantly tried to do are illegal and prosecutable.
But will not happen, Trump is all they have.
Where are the honorable Republicans?
Extinct species.

House Dems eye contempt charges for Trump officials to compel testimony[/h1]I promise we will do everything in our power to enforce our subpoena. I refuse to be in a situation where were unable to use every tool that we have in our toolbox to do that, Rep. [link=https://thehill.com/people/elijah-cummings-0]Elijah Cummings[/link] (D-Md.), chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, told reporters in the Capitol. Invoking a little-used process known as inherent contempt, Cummings said, is one of those options.
We will look at all those tools from a very practical standpoint, he said. It may be that we want to just deal with fines, I dont know. But its either fines and/or prison.
Separately, Reps. [link=https://thehill.com/people/jerrold-nadler]Jerrold Nadler[/link] (D-N.Y.), head of the Judiciary Committee, and [link=https://thehill.com/people/adam-schiff]Adam Schiff[/link] (D-Calif.), head of the Intelligence Committee, met with members of the New Democrat Coalition Tuesday morning, where they also endorsed the possibility of tapping contempt as a strategy for compelling testimony from uncooperative administration officials.
I think we need to explore any mechanism that we have to insist on the administration complying with the law, Schiff told The Hill. And that obviously includes litigating it, it includes fencing funding, it may involve resurrection of the power of inherent contempt.
Under inherent contempt, both the House and the Senate have the authority to detain and imprison an individual who refuses to comply with congressional demands, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. But such an approach has not been used for nearly a century, and employing the House sergeant at arms to go after Trump officials would be a highly unusual move.

[h1]House Democrats Mull Holding Barr In Contempt[/h1]
Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee are discussing holding Attorney General William Barr in contempt of Congress, the [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/powerpost/house-democrats-consider-holding-barr-in-contempt-of-congress/2019/05/01/a291313a-6c22-11e9-a66d-a82d3f3d96d5_story.html?utm_term=.07fc130f5e70]Washington Post[/link] reports.
During a pair of closed-door meetings Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, the committee decided that it would probably make a push for a Barr contempt citation if he skips a scheduled Thursday hearing or ignores their subpoena for the full report by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Given that Democrats are more or less a party of traitors, this news is underwhelming.

I guess I have to ask the same thing about the Democrats after OIG and Barr find out about the scam to get the FISA Warrants and Obama spying. Of course, we’ll do the same thing if… if…. there is no evidence found. “We’ll just keep saying there is, keep pushing the narrative, push to get warrants, arrest people and send them to prison”. You know… the Lefts game.

Sure I will keep pushing the narrative, but Jesus won’t care about this when he returns. Why would he?

Jesus doesn’t care about personal morality? That’s in the New Testament?
That’s a new one on me for Christians telling me they are most moral. Based on what if Jesus doesn’t care about morality.

Sorry, maybe I should have used Comey’s description “Investigating” as he so stated the FBI does not Spy. So they Investigated with Electronic Surveillance I guess? We’ll see. Watching Nadler and Kentucky Fried Cohen on TV right now. “Dems… Spending money like it not theirs” Classic. Lets see… what have that got done since 2016? Absolutely… nothing.

House Judiciary Sets Date for Mueller Testimony[/h1]

Attorney General William Barr has said he does not oppose allowing Mueller to testify, but Nadler told reporters that the committee is still negotiating with the Justice Department.[/h1]

[h1]Mueller Agrees to Testify[/h1]
The House Judiciary Committee and a representative for special counsel Robert Mueller have agreed to a tentative date of May 15 for Mueller to testify about his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

I’ve been out of the loop for a few days on a trip. Should be interesting. I kind of saw some things Barr represented to the Senate about Mueller writing him a letter. I’d like to hear Mueller’s take on that. I find it hard to buy Barr’s statement about a Mueller staffer writing him. I’d assume a letter would be addressed to Barr and signed by someone.
