DeSantis wants to get in on the action in this Musk v Cook game …

[h3][link=https://www.politicususa.com/2022/11/30/ron-desantis-wants-congress-to-investigate-apple-if-kick-twitter-off-the-app-store.html]Ron DeSantis Wants Congress To Investigate Apple If It Removes Twitter from iPhone[/link][/h3]
[i]Hes providing free speech, and so if Apple responds to that by nuking them from the App Store, you know, I think that would be a huge, huge mistake.
And it would be a really raw exercise of monopolistic power that I think would merit a response from the United States Congress.

[link=https://www.investors.com/news/technology/tesla-stock-burned-as-musk-goes-ballistic-on-twitter/] Tesla Stock Burned As Musk Goes Ballistic on Twitter

[/link]Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jones weighed in on the matter this week. He said Musk’s spiteful comments have inflated a negative sentiment about Tesla and could drive some degree of damage to the electric-vehicle maker’s fundamentals.

“Our investor survey reinforces our views that Elon Musk’s recent involvement with Twitter has contributed to negative sentiment momentum in Tesla shares and could drive some degree of adverse downside skew to Tesla fundamentals,” Jonas said in a note to clients.

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, in a report to clients last week, said the “Twitter circus show” is an overhang on Tesla stock that is not abating.

The Twitter overhang is comprised of three main factors, Ives wrote. One is the fear of Musk selling more Tesla stock to fund Twitter’s red ink. There’s also brand deterioration of Tesla, and Musk’s attention focused on Twitter instead of Tesla.

“In what has been a dark comedy show with Twitter, Musk has essentially tarnished the Tesla story/stock and is starting to potentially impact the Tesla brand with this ongoing Twitter train-wreck disaster,” Ives said.

[h2][link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/11/30/apple-musk-tim-cook/]Elon Musk says hes launching a war against Apple. Its probably a losing battle.[/link][/h2]

If theres one company for him not to pick a fight with in the world, its Apple, and he just poked the bear, said Dan Ives, a financial analyst with Wedbush Securities. Its just another head-scratching battle that Musk has waged since his ownership of Twitter.

Musk joins a long line of other app-makers and regulators that have, so far, unsuccessfully sought to significantly rein in the power Apple wields over social media platforms. Facebook has launched a similar unsuccessful[b] [/b]public relations campaign against Apples privacy rules, which cost Facebook billions in lost ad sales. Lawmakers to date have been unable to pass legislation that would give users the ability to download apps outside of Apple and Googles app stores. And courts in the United States have so far not compelled Apple to significantly change the fees it collects on app sales.

Lawmakers so far have taken little action to curb Apples power. [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/08/11/apple-google-senators-app-store-conflict/?itid=lk_inline_manual_10&itid=lk_inline_manual_40]Legislation [/link]that would force Apple and Google to allow people to download apps outside of their stores and allow them to install alternative stores has gone nowhere, and the bills are viewed as unlikely to pass under Republican leadership in the House.
Without regulatory action that forces Apples hand, Musk probably faces an uphill battle attempting to shame Apple into adopting more favorable rules, experts say.

[b]Twitter certainly needed Apple much more than Apple needed Twitter,[/b] Paskalis said.

Looks like the usual switcheroo, Musk complains of Apples control & pricing over apps plus Apples threat to reduce if not eliminate advertising on Twit, so Musk declares war, meets with Tim Cook who essentially says nothing except Apple will do what Apple will do, so Musk declares success for the issue never at issue, Apple not throwing Twit off the Apple Store.

Thats how geniuses work, switch the subject & declare success.

Now the other genius, DeSantis & his call for Congress to clip Apples wings over Apple being against free speech because of Musks complaints.

But the EU might show DeSantis & Musk as paper tigers.

    That’s pretty much it.

And Tim Cook rightly sees no upside in a war… so he quietly lets the issue die and goes back to doing what Apple is gonna do.. which is charge people for having their apps on his phones and fighting tooth and knife to protect the platform from anything he thinks could weaken their dominance in the long run … including twitter

**number of nazis quickly increases even more**
          __________

If you’re interested, the big story is a Matt Taibbi thread on how the laptop story was kept off of twitter.

          [link=https://twitter.com/mtaibbi/status/1598822959866683394]https://twitter.com/mtaib…us/1598822959866683394[/link]

There was political pressure on Twitter both from the Trump White House and from the Democratic campaigns on a number of subjects. They were both working the refs.  Right away the big “bombshell” is that…twitter offered political campaigns on both sides the ability to flag content for review. The trump team didn’t bother using the tools as much as the Biden team.  Taibbi shares some internal emails …I think it actually shows just how much of a thoughtful review of process and reasoning occurred.  The allegation is that b/c of personal politics of Twitter employees, Dem complaints landed on more sympathetic ears.   It’s a real story … but not much of one.  It’s a “front page of Newsmax, back pages on Fox” level event…

…a bunch of incels and bots hanging out and waiting for the “revelations” clearly hoping to see something suggesting that there was some backroom deal between Joe Biden or top Democratic lawmakers. All they got was some implications that Twitter leans more liberal and then a lot of confusion on whether to continue to block the distribution of the laptop-story.

[b]Hate Speechs Rise on Twitter Is Unprecedented, Researchers Find[/b]

[b]Problematic content and formerly barred accounts have increased sharply in the short time since Elon Musk took over, researchers said.[/b]

Slurs against gay men appeared on Twitter 2,506 times a day on average before Mr. Musk took over. Afterward, their use rose to 3,964 times a day.

And antisemitic posts referring to Jews or Judaism soared more than 61 percent in the two weeks after Mr. Musk acquired the site.

These findings from the Center for Countering Digital Hate, the Anti-Defamation League and other groups that study online platforms provide the most comprehensive picture to date of how conversations on Twitter have changed since [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/11/technology/elon-musk-twitter-takeover.html]Mr. Musk completed[/link] his $44 billion deal for the company in late October. While the numbers are relatively small, researchers said the increases were atypically high.

The shift in speech is just the tip of a set of changes on the service under Mr. Musk. Accounts that Twitter used to regularly remove such as those that identify as part of the Islamic State, which were banned after the U.S. government classified ISIS as a terror group  [link=https://gnet-research.org/2022/11/18/islamic-state-supporters-on-twitter-how-is-new-twitter-handling-an-old-problem/?utm_campaign=wp_the_technology_202&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&wpisrc=nl_technology202]have come roaring back[/link]. Accounts associated with QAnon, a vast far-right conspiracy theory, have [link=https://www.mediamatters.org/twitter/qanon-influencers-are-trying-use-twitters-new-subscription-service-regain-foothold-platform]paid for and received [/link]verified status on Twitter, giving them a sheen of legitimacy.

These changes are alarming, researchers said, adding that they had never seen such a sharp increase in hate speech, problematic content and formerly banned accounts in such a short period on a mainstream social media platform.

                    Of note:

Instead of chasing child sex predators or terrorists, the FBI has agents lots of them analyzing and mass-flagging social media posts. Not as part of any criminal investigation, but as a permanent, end-in-itself surveillance operation. People should not be okay with this.

Twitter must comply with EU rules, Macron tells Musk

Musk confirmed Twitter to follow the Christchurch Call on fighting spread of terrorist material, French president says.

Twitter’s policy changes are “a big issue,” Macron said on Thursday in an [link=https://twitter.com/GMA/status/1598309552050425856]interview[/link] on Good Morning America, adding: “What I push very much for is exactly the opposite: more regulation.”

“Free speech and democracy is based on respect and public order. You can demonstrate, you can have free speech, you can write what you want, but there are responsibilities and limits,” he argued.

Musk told Macron that Twitter would follow the [link=https://www.politico.eu/?p=2291933]Christchurch Call[/link], which is aimed at restricting the spread of terrorist material on the internet, and would cooperate to improve child protection online, the French president said following their meeting.

Musk going out in SanFran is  going to be like Trump going to a Yankees game.

Guess Elon will have to learn to avoid urban places if he wants to delude himself that he’s loved by the public.

[link=https://gizmodo.com/elon-musk-booed-stadium-crowd-dave-chappelle-sf-boo-1849881192]Elon Musk Gets Viciously Booed by San Francisco Crowd at Dave Chappelle Show

    [/link]

The crowd erupted into a mixture of cheers and boos, before the boos clearly won out, according to footage posted on [link=https://twitter.com/CleoPat48937885/status/1602214514232938497]Twitter[/link]. The booing got louder as Musk wandered around onstage with a microphone in hand. Musk started pacing and waving, clearly unsure what to do about such a negative reaction.

Maybe the crowd was made up of the thousands of people Musk laid off from Twitter, as Chappelle joked. That certainly seems like a very real possibility, given the response. But honestly, Musk has been such an asshole for so many different reasons lately, its tough to narrow it down. Musk has also been directing his hostility at former employees, some of whom elected to stay on with the company after Musks initial purge, like [link=https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-12-11/elon-musk-steps-up-attacks-on-twitter-s-former-safety-head]Yoel Roth[/link], the former head of Trust and Safety at Twitter.

The comedian then lashed out at the audience again.
“Do you hear that sound Elon? That’s the sound of pending civil unrest. I can’t wait to see what story you decimate next motherf*****,” Chappelle said.
“You shut the f*** up with your boos. There’s something better you can do. Booing is not the best thing you can do. I wish everybody in this audience peace.”

[h1]Elon Musk uses QAnon tactic in criticizing former Twitter safety chief[/h1]

      Quote:
Musk told more than 30,000 listeners in a live Twitter Spaces audio session Friday night that he recently discovered that child sex abuse material was a severe problem on Twitter and that fighting it would be his top priority.

In [link=https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redirect-to/?redirect=https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Felonmusk%2Fstatus%2F1601660414743687169%3Fs%3D20%26t%3DkowTn21iTfkpoUFC7414lg]follow-up tweets[/link] Saturday, he misrepresented a section of a graduate thesis from recently departed safety chief Yoel Roth. Looks like Yoel is arguing in favor of children being able to access adult Internet services in his PhD thesis, he wrote.

The attached snippet instead showed Roth suggesting that since teenagers were accessing apps and websites that they were not supposed to use, as they always have, those services should consider offering toned-down content alongside adult fare.

Hes putting Yoels life in danger and he knows it, tweeted Alejandra Caraballo, an instructor at Harvard Law School. Roth did not respond to a request for comment.

[b]Twitters chief executive has stolen the ex-presidents media mojo by becoming the ubiquitous troll-in-chief who always owns the libs.[/b]

For years, Donald Trump has survived scandal, scorn and defeat and still managed to keep his warlord grip on the Republican Party. Even this months epic string of disasters, from his candidates losses in the midterms and his dinner with white supremacist Nick Fuentes and [link=https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#m_-459754724400606452_]professed Hitler-fan[/link] Ye (Kanye West) to the tax fraud [link=https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#m_-459754724400606452_]convictions[/link] of two of his companies, might not derail him.

But irrelevance might. In the critical weeks since his Nov. 16 campaign launch, the person who has dominated the right-wing attention economy isnt Trump. Its Elon Musk. …

    [h1]WSJ: Twitters Advertising Truth Hurts[/h1]
[h2][b]Elon Musk is leading with narrative at Twitter. Dont lose sight of the dollars and sense.[/b][/h2]

Earlier this month the New York Times reported that as of October, Twitters roster of advertisers had fallen nearly 42% since May. Similarwebs data paint an even worse picture: Activity on Twitters ad manager, a subdomain of Twitters ad platform sites that specifically[b] [/b]hosts[b] [/b]those creating or monitoring ad campaigns, declined nearly 74% in October from a year earlier, according to the firms data. In November, visits fell 85% on the same basisthe largest ad traffic decline since Twitters change of hands.

Worryingly, even Twitters aggressive incentives might not be helping. Similarwebs latest data show that for the first few days of December, the platforms ad manager domain traffic trends have continued to decline with traffic volume now so low it doesnt even meet the firms threshold necessary to track and measure it. A Twitter representative couldnt be reached for comment.

Mr. Musks show may be entertaining, but someone still has to pay for the production.

Good thing he cut so much deadweight from the payroll. People that were actually harming the service rather than improving the service.

Is this place fun at all without someone to check the others, such as acpce1 or myself? I come on real quick and I see “dergon” as last commenter on nearly all the threads in this section. If it’s not him, it’s some other socialist.

Exactly the point & goal it seems, right-wingnut support making Twit into a right-wing disinformation machine.

So if Republicans have suddenly become moderates believing not in alternate facts but in actual facts, Elon did not get the memo.

           [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/12/12/musk-fauci-right-wing-information-warfare-how-to-respond/]https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/12/12/musk-fauci-right-wing-information-warfare-how-to-respond/[/link]

Its understandable that Musks critics are trying shaming and outrage, in that this could further drive advertisers away from Twitter. But, paradoxically, it might also help Musk. The DealBook newsletter [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/12/business/musk-twitter-fauci.html]suggests[/link] that hes trying to boost conservative engagement and help Twitters business by winning over right-leaning users and conservative politicians.

If so, the coin of the realm is the Triggering. A massive backlash from liberals and Democrats creates the impression of controversy, which draws news media attention. It also persuades the right-leaning constituencies Musk hopes to engage that he is drawing blood.

In much of the right-wing info-ecosystem, liberal outrage is a sign of an attacks effectiveness. It can be only confirmation that the Libs Were Owned.

[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/12/14/qanon-musk-revival-twitter/]QAnon finds new life in Musk’s Twitter ownership

            [/link]

Logan Strain, a conspiracy theory researcher who uses the name [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/04/01/qanon-travis-view-logan-strain/?itid=lk_inline_manual_12]Travis View on the podcast QAnon Anonymous,[/link] said Musks conspiracist dog whistles have galvanized a group that was fractured after 2020, when major social networks including Twitter started banning QAnon accounts and Trump lost the White House.
Hes responding to and validating a rogues gallery of right-wing conspiracists [and] going through a checklist of far-right grievances in a way that has certainly energized them, Strain said. For QAnon believers, what they view as a major battlefield in the information war just opened up again.

{I}n QAnon circles, Musks ambiguity and plausible deniability have been seen as a strategic way for him to subtly push their dogma into the mainstream. A QAnon-boosting account with 165,000 followers on [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/10/15/truth-social-trump-animosity-whistleblower/?itid=lk_inline_manual_19]Truth Social[/link], Trumps social network, wrote Monday: At this rate, Elon is on pace to start posting Q drops to millions of normies and theres nothing anyone can do to stop him.
