Are you going to pay for Twitter if he makes it a subscription site?

No. But I’m not the kind of Twitter user that Musk needs to keep on board. I’m not verified, don’t have a lot of followers, and don’t tweet particularly often.

What Musk needs is to keep that core of “heavy users” who account for less than 10 percent of monthly overall users but generate 90 percent of all tweets and half of global revenue.  Reuters [link=https://www.reuters.com/technology/exclusive-where-did-tweeters-go-twitter-is-losing-its-most-active-users-internal-2022-10-25/]reported[/link] last week that Twitter is already struggling to keep those folks on board and advertisers are [link=https://www.vice.com/en/article/qjkxym/twitter-is-already-a-graveyard-leaked-report-suggests]bearish on the website[/link] because of it.

So it’s a tough needle to thread.  Can you get these people to pay for a subscription without losing a significant percentage.  Do you lose more $ through the loss of content/engagement than you get from the $8/month/blue check? Hard to tell.

The chaos continues. Twitter now attempting to rehire a bunch of employees who are just terminated earlier in the week. Some were fired by mistake. Some work on project teams that musk now realizes he wants to keep.

[h3][link=https://thehill.com/policy/technology/3722212-cybersecurity-expert-paid-twitter-verification-going-to-create-a-very-chaotic-environment/]Cybersecurity expert Chris Krebs: Paid Twitter verification ‘going to create a very chaotic environment'[/link][/h3]

Former top cybersecurity official [link=https://thehill.com/people/chris-krebs/]Chris Krebs [/link]on Sunday said the paid subscription plan for a verification mark on Twitter will create a very chaotic environment because it would open the information space to foreign actors, election deniers and other potentially malign influencers.

Krebs told moderator [link=https://thehill.com/people/margaret-brennan/]Margaret Brennan [/link]on CBSs Face the Nation that being able to buy the blue tick for $8 a month goes against a long-standing policy of verifying authentic accounts.

To have such a dramatic shift in that marker of trust [and] now you can buy it, Krebs said. It opens the information space to a broader community of influencers, clout chasers, election denialists and [foreign actors]. Weve seen reports lately that Russia, China and Iran are back at their old tricks, and it is going to create a very chaotic environment.

Krebs served as the first director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency from November 2018 to November 2020, when he was fired by former President Trump after contesting his false claims about the 2020 election.

    [/QUOTE]

Ben Collins, NBC: “The worry about $8 verification for everybody isnt that somebody is going to impersonate Joe Biden. Its that theyre going to impersonate a no-name in a position of power an election official, a CDC worker, a local news reporter and cause chaos. Much less solvable problem.”

The low barrier to entry for verification makes it ripe for hostile actors to engage in disinformation and harassment.

On the reasoning behind Musk’s Twitter purchase –

The explanation most generous to Musk is that hes a visionary. He sees things we cant. He does things we cant. And while Twitter as currently constructed seems like a very bad use of his capital, this is the guy who created Space X. He created [link=https://fortune.com/company/tesla]Tesla[/link]. Neuralink. Odds are, no one reading this column has ever launched anyone into space or moved the entire auto industry into electric vehicles. Maybe we should just give him the benefit of the doubt and withhold judgment for a few years.

The least generous explanation is that Musk is essentially no different from Donald Trump or Kayne West. He needs attention ahead of anything and everything else. Bad attention is much better than no attention at all, no matter what it requires him to say or do.

Or maybe its more obvious than we realize. No one in the worldperhaps no one in historyhas benefited more from hype and pixie dust than Elon Musk. Teslas market cap is around $700 billion. General Motors’ market cap is approximately $55 billion. [link=https://fortune.com/company/toyota-tsusho]Toyota[/link] has a market cap of around $220 billion. Toyotas annual revenue exceeds Teslas by a margin of almost four to one [link=https://www.google.com/search?q=tesla+market+cap&rlz=1C5GCEM_enGB1000GB1001&oq=tesla+&aqs=chrome.0.35i39i285j69i59j0i67i131i433l2j0i67j69i60l3.3544j1j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#wptab=s:H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgVuLSz9U3SM7OKMypeMRoyi3w8sc9YSmdSWtOXmNU4-IKzsgvd80rySypFJLgYoOy-KR4uJC08exi4nPLzEvMS051zs8tSCxKXcQqnJdYnJJYaFVSnJOokAwRBQDD-7AQbQAAAA]($275 billion to $75 billion)[/link]. Even if you decide somehow that Tesla is as valuable as Toyota, theres still a half-a-trillion-dollar gap. That comes from retail investor enthusiasm. It comes from the constant hype machine of Twitter, Reddit, StockTwits, and every other platform.

Maybe owning Twitter ultimately makes his other companies worth hundreds of billions more. Maybe owning Twitter scares off potential critics. Maybe he just sees something we dont. But most likely, Musk fell prey to the same temptation as many rich and powerful people throughout history: he wanted attention, he figured he knew better about everything than everyone else, and he couldnt keep his mouth shut. Now hes getting exactly what he asked for.

If that actually caused Lilly stock to dive then our financial markets have some serious problems.

Can day traders just short General Motors, Tweet “cars are now free!” from an account named “GM CEO” and cause the stock to drop?

Musk continues that smooth transition… goes after yet another Senator who has FINRA and the SEC on speed dial.

[link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/11/13/elon-musk-markey-twitter-tesla/]Senator Edward Markey and Musk exchange barbs[/link]
Markey has a parody account made (under conset to prove a point about how easy it was to fake verification) … and it went off the rails from there

      Markey –
Safeguards such as Twitters blue checkmark once allowed users to be smart, critical consumers of news and information in Twitters global town square, he said. But your Twitter takeover, rapid and haphazard imposition of platform changes, removal of safeguards against disinformation, and firing of large numbers of Twitter employees have accelerated Twitters descent into the Wild West of social media.

Markey said he would like a response explaining the process by Nov. 25.

Im asking for answers from Elon Musk, who is putting profits over people and his debt over stopping disinformation.

Musk’s mature reply – “Perhaps it is because your real account sounds like a parody?

Markey – “One of your companies is under an FTC consent decree. Auto safety watchdog NHTSA is investigating another for killing people. And youre spending your time picking fights online. Fix your companies. Or Congress will.”

60 cents on the dollar for those Twitter bounds sounding waaaaayy high.  Hell, now one of the main reasons I want Dems to win the GA sWarnock seat is so that Markey and Warren can subpoena Musk and haul his a** up to DC Senate hearing.

Elon Musk said he has too much work as the chief executive of both Twitter and [link=https://www.barrons.com/market-data/stocks/tsla]Tesla TSLA 2.56% [/link] as he undertakes mass layoffs and grapples with an advertising backlash at the social-media company.

I am really working the absolute most amount that I can work from morning to night, seven days a week, Musk said. He said it was with great difficulty that he was running [link=https://www.barrons.com/market-data/stocks/tsla]Tesla [/link](ticker: TSLA) and its global operations as well as Twitter, after acquiring the latter for $44 billion last month.

Employees were told they had to a sign a pledge to stay on with the company. If you are sure that you want to be part of the new Twitter, please click yes on the link below, read the email to all staff, which linked to an online form.

Anyone who did not sign the pledge by 5 p.m. Eastern time Thursday was told they would receive three months of severance pay, the message said.
In the midnight email, which was shared with The Washington Post, Musk said Twitter will need to be extremely hardcore going forward. This will mean working long hours at high intensity, he said. Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.

The pledge email, paired with a [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/11/10/twitter-security-resignations/]new policy mandating a return to the office[/link], is expected to lead to even more attrition at a company whose staff Musk had already reduced by half. Musk said Twitter would be more of an engineer-driven operation going forward and while the design and product-management areas would still be important and report to him, he said, those writing great code will constitute the majority of our team and have the greatest sway.

Reportedly dozens of people stuck in the parking garage after the badge deactivation debacle …. had to cut them out of the lot with a sawzall.

    Mass departures continue.

Musk’s ultimatum had people being mandated to sign the “hardcore” pledge by Thursday 5pm. He was having a large conference call … at 5pm many people just hung up on him.
