Ron DeSantis bets big on his Disney feud
Interviews with voters, along with three polls, show strong GOP support for DeSantis over Disney in their fight, despite skepticism from some donors and strategists.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has heard [link=https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/ron-desantis-donors-allies-shakeup-presidential-campaign-2024-rcna81624]plenty of warnings[/link] from donors, supporters and consultants that he’s foolish for going up against Disney. People love Disney World. Waging this public fight is bad for Florida’s economy. Its even worse politics, they say.
But Republicans who would make up the voter base in a presidential primary may see it differently. NBC News interviewed nearly three dozen potential voters, strategists and pollsters, finding a picture of a primary electorate that is skeptical of Disney and supportive of DeSantis calling out the corporate behemoth.…
while there is the potential for GOP support, donor dissatisfaction exposes a real political risk to the governor should donors turn off the spigot in a heated primary battle.…
A [link=https://www.unf.edu/coas/porl/_files/polls/statewide/certified.rf.UNF-Mar-Statewide-2023.pdf]University of Northern Florida[/link] poll in March showed both Ron DeSantis and Disney held overall favorability at 50% and 52%, respectively, among all respondents. Among Republicans, however, DeSantis favorability shot up to 87% and Disneys dropped to 27%.
An [link=https://www.ipsos.com/en-us/reutersipsos-poll-americans-say-desantis-punishing-disney-free-speech]Ipsos/Reuters poll [/link]in late April found that 64% of those surveyed believed DeSantis was punishing Disney for free speech. But again, the responses split along party lines, with independents and Democrats siding with Disney. Among Republicans polled, 64% said DeSantis was rightfully rolling back special treatment for the company.

[link=https://thehill.com/opinion/campaign/3995672-desantis-won-the-first-round-against-disney-he-should-have-walked-away/]DeSantis won the first round against Disney: He should have walked away[/link]
When Disney had its return of the king moment, a smart leader would have taken the opportunity to invite [link=https://thehill.com/people/bob-iger/]Bob Iger [/link]to the governors mansion, reiterate the point about parental rights and then extend a hand and start fresh. Instead, DeSantis made an enemy of one of the all-time greats.
While the court battles are just beginning, DeSantis has, in many ways, already lost. He appears unhinged, nasty and vindictive just as the presidential race is coming into focus, leading many Republicans to wonder: How is this guy different from Trump? Not surprisingly, his primary rivals are seizing on the moment to [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/19/us/politics/desantis-disney-gop.html]attack him[/link] as a loser.
Ultimately, however, the real losers are the people of Florida. DeSantiss battle against the Mouse has damaged our reputation as a pro-business state, distracted from more important issues and could come with steep economic costs.
A year from now, if the fallout continues, we will all find ourselves wishing that DeSantis had taken Elsas advice.
During an earnings call, the Disney CEO discussed Gov. Ron DeSantis’ ongoing battle against Walt Disney Word’s special district….…I want to set the record straight on that too. There are about 2,000 special districts in Florida. Most are established to foster investor development, where we were one of them….
…the Daytona Speedway, it has one. So do the Villages, which is a permanent retirement community, and there are countless others…
….But in fact we are the largest taxpayer in Central Florida. We pay more taxes, specifically more real estate taxes, as a result of that special district…
…Im going to finish what is obviously kind of a long answer by asking one question: does the state want us to invest more, employ more people, and pay more taxesor not?
-
agree completely with the last two posts on this, especially “… he should have walked away”. DeSantis has handled this terribly. And that’s really concerning for a potential president, b/c it shows a complete lack of the temperament and skillset (wisdom, restraint) needed for a good president.
And I’m certain the pro-business wing of the Republican Party sees it the same way. So basically he’s fighting with Trump over the MAGA wing. Good luck with that.
DeSantis needs to find a way out of the fight with Disney and reinvent himself as a moderate pro-business Republican, which simply may not be who he is. Or IMO he is done and will fade out over the rest of 2023.-
a corollary of this: there’s been a lot of angst about DeSantis being a threat to Biden, esp a few months ago when he was polling better. Were I a Biden campaign staffer I’d probably be worrying less about DeSantis at this point and trying to figure out where a real threat might come from.
-
At this point the only real threat to Biden is his ability to seem awake and in control of his faculties. I dont the Republicans can find anyone to beat Trump in a primary
Ive been discussing this with a lot of people who hate Trump and are worried that something bad will happen to Biden before the general election. They would rest a lot easier knowing a younger opponent was at least around as a backup.
One thing he could do is choose a new running mate. Kamala could lose to Trump Im afraid.

Anyone see Disneys Strange World? Did it really disturb you? Did you feel indoctrinated by the mixed race & LGBTQ of the character.
Only in Florida is a mixed race LGBTQ cartoon character considered indoctrination.
Florida Man becomes Florida Mom on school board. Wonder what disturbed mom more, the mixed race or the LGBTQ of the character.
Florida, where hate comes to live.

Disney scraps plans for campus development & requirement that California employees move to Florida due to ongoing feud from DeSantis.

Disney will no longer be moving forward with the construction of its Lake Nona, Florida, employee campus.
The company will also no longer be requiring California-based employees to relocate.
The announcement comes amid a bitter feud between the company and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis centered in part around the companys special district and development plans.
Disney
has abandoned plans to open up a new employee campus in Lake Nona, Florida, amid rising tensions with the states governor.Citing changing business conditions and the return of CEO Bob Iger, Josh DAmaro, chairman of Disneys parks, experiences and products division, penned a memo to employees Thursday, announcing that the company will not move forward with construction of the campus and will no longer be asking more than 2,000 California-based employees to relocate to Florida.

I don’t care where you fall on the political spectrum—-this is not a good look for Ron—going after one of the biggest businesses in his state and causing them to pull out of a billion dollar investment in YOUR state. There is no way to spin this positively. I don’t like my politicians going after businesses unless they have a really really good reason. A tweet about a difference in opinion is not a good reason. This particular decision by Ron is costing the state a lot of money and jobs.
-
Like the hostage taking re the debt, the question is whether the conservatives will hold DeSantis & Republicans responsible for any negative fallout. As in the past, Im betting no. Unless Florida actually raises taxes on their supporters, they will be cheered on.
-
The moderates and independents will, including some moderate republicans. Great opportunity for moderates everywhere.

Disney didnt mince words.
This case presents the fundamental question whether the Governor and the State can escape accountability for their open defiance of our Nations most cherished liberties, Disney said Wednesday in its opposition to state defendants motion to dismiss ([link=https://deadline.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/disney-desantis-dismissal-opp-july-26.pdf]read it here[/link]).
The Governor seeks to evade responsibility for his actions on a narrower ground, asserting that a governor cannot be held officially liable for implementing, administering, and enforcing state laws that punish residents for political statements violating a state-prescribed speech code. ”
The motion seeks dismissal on Article III standing, sovereign-immunity, and legislative-immunity grounds, but those principles have no application here.

Last Call host Brian Sullivan asked DeSantis why he doesnt just pick up the phone and call Disney CEO [link=https://deadline.com/tag/bob-iger/]Bob Iger[/link] to resolve the dispute. Weve basically moved on, DeSantis said. They are suing the state of Florida. They are going to lose that lawsuit. So what I would say is, Drop the lawsuit. You have the state that even CNBC ranks as number one of all 50 states for economy.
…
DeSantis told CNBC that the special district was a case of giving extraordinary privileges to one special company at the exclusion of everyone else. But Disneys lawsuits includes numerous examples where the governor engineered efforts to target the company specifically, including legislation aimed at regulating its monorail system, while boasting that the company has been silent on social issues.
…
A Disney spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on DeSantis latest statements.
