Democrats Liberals… Not Lefties, who you got for 2020?
Posted by 19462008 on September 6, 2018 at 6:04 pmI’m really curious to know on this forum who my Democratic / Liberal friends think may be the running mates against Trump. I’m been perplexed in knowing that within your own party if you support a full Leftist (socialist) candidate as well or… would you feel better if it be a: Liberal/Lefty or Lefty/Liberal combo.

Mitt Romney rides in on Rafalca swinging a sword.

I’m serious. I’d like to get the demeanor of this forum which is heavily Liberal / Democrat. Lord knows the majority of you all have comments and opinions.

Right now Trump would make me vote for Richard Nixon over him.
The whole Republican Party has gone off the rails. The real question is who in their right minds supports such corrupt mean-spirited people & President & why. There are no positive goals, its all negativity & hate.

Biden/Romney (on trusty dancing steed Rafalca)
Avenatti/Oprah in some order
Sanders/Warren-
We have midterms to get done. I like Biden but 2020 is 2 years away & a lot can happen. Id like to see Democrats get more involved & decisive, both those running & the voters. & no purity tests and circular firing squads about who is too old or uninspiring. This is grown up stuff. Fulfilled fantasies are great but I want sane reality with a platform to address & solve problems.

1. has no political baggage and is from outside the beltway
2. no hidden skeletons in the closet
3. can appeal to a broad range of voters – especially working class whites in the rust belt
So….I’ll vote in the primaries for the candidate closest to the above profile in 2020 -

I certainly understand Dergon wanting Biden — He could win. He’s an attractive candidate for Dems. What I don’t understand is WHY BOOKER/HARRIS?? They seem like such clowns? Booker with his “spartacus moment” and Harris dismissing the constitution as “that book you carry” during the Kavanagh hearings.
I dont keep track of all the dems running, but Booker and Harris seem like tools, and neither has accomplished anything.
I hope Booker or Harris win the nomination. Biden… not so much. Like I said he could win.

I’ve been voting Democrat for 50 years, and I’m at a loss to identify anybody that could beat Trump in 2020. Biden has the best chance as a centrist, but good lord, he’s older than I am. Everybody else skews way too far left. There needs to be somebody that can scrape some of Trump’s base away. Kasich is probably as close as you could come to having a decent chance, even if he’s a Republican, but haven’t heard anything about a possible candidacy for him. It’s all just so sad and discouraging.

I am curious to know what skews “way far left?”
Is it gun control?
Is it social issues like LGBQT and bathrooms for instance?
Is it “religious freedom” relating to not serving LGBQT people or prayer in schools or not providing medical coverage in health insurance for women’s healthcare and sexual issues?
Is it voting rights & attacking voting suppression?
Is it getting voters to participate? Being against gerrymandering? In voting, in government and civic responsibilities?
Is it making government more responsible to citizens?
Is it expanding the ACA making it more available and affordable to everyone because good affordable healthcare is a right?
Is it about consumer rights and having government regulations to improve health and safety and finance, etc?
Is it better healthcare, meaning outcomes in general across the country?
Is it public education better avialble to everyone? Affordable undergrad studies?
Is it teacher pay?
Is it living wages?
Is it improved wages and living standards?
Is it better a economy that actually lifts all boats, especially the rowboats at the bottom of the economic scale?
Is it about infrastructure and roads and better and more available and affordable public transportation?
Is it about bringing down the deficit and national debt?
Is it about equality, economic and under the law for everyone?
Is it about improving privacy from government and corporate intrusion? And not being only something to market for corporations?
Improving the 9th Amendment for citizen benefits over corporate and government intrusion and control?
Is it about immigration that addresses the country’s needs and individual rights?
Is it about public sercive and seeing government as an asset not “the problem” for hte country?
Is it about trade and open markets?
Is it about keeping your allies close and showing our enemies – like Russia – that we will fight back and they can’t interfere in our elections or like in england murder people at will?
It it about fighting terrorism whereever it appears and helping countries fight back against terrorism?
Is it about helping refugees around the world who are refugees because of terrorism whether non-government terrorists or governments themselves who terrorize their citizens? Syria comes to mind and other areas in the Middle East. As does Burma/Myanmar.
I don’t think I forgot too much in this list. These are my left-wing concerns. How are they too far out there, please explain because i seriously don’t understand how they are extreme ideas and goals.
Seriously, I am not being facetious. What is extreme left in the above?
-
Oh, I forgot addressing carbon pollution and burning fossil fuels and global warming due to CO2 and methane, etc.
And renewable resources need to be further advanced and developed.
Are these also far-lefty positions?-
I would vote for Warren, Harris, Booker and anyone that they want to run with who can string a few sentences together without sounding like Sarah Palin. Any of those three would be excellent competition for President Pence in 2020. Biden and Bernie are too old.

Booker and Harris mobilize the Obama coalition … charasmatic, young persons of color. Booker has some Wall Street baggage, but not too bad. Harris is a clean slate.
Biden wins back back enough of the Obama/Trump white working class voters to take the industrial midwest. Booker/Harris keep the base energized.-

David Leonhardt also calls out the Republican meme that Democrats are extreme leftists.
[link=https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/16/opinion/columnists/democrats-midterms-progressive-left-trump.html]https://www.nytimes.com/2…essive-left-trump.html[/link]
Conventional wisdom says that the middle is disappearing from American politics: The Republicans have moved far to the right, the Democrats far to the left, and woe to any moderate voters looking for politicians to represent their views.
You keep hearing this story partly because Republicans have an obvious interest in promoting it and partly because large parts of the news media find it irresistible. Its a both side do it angle that allows us journalists to appear tough, knowing and above the partisan scrum. We love that image. But the facts dont support the story in this case.
For starters, look at [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/paloma/daily-202/2018/09/14/daily-202-new-york-primary-results-challenge-the-crystallizing-2018-narrative/5b9b14491b326b47ec9595d4/?utm_term=.cb9af0bc1c1f]this years primaries[/link], which finished last week. Across the country, a grand total of two Democratic incumbents in the House lost a primary. Zero Senate candidates did. In conservative states with moderate Democratic senators like Indiana, North Dakota, and West Virginia not one of those moderates even faced a serious primary challenge.
As Lawrence Summers, the former Treasury secretary (and no lefty revolutionary), likes to say, the last 15 years should have nudged open-minded people to the political left: [b]The free market isnt delivering healthy increases in living standards for most Americans. In response, Democrats are focusing[/b] less on Bill Clintons old themes, like personal and fiscal responsibility, and [b]more on using the government to help people.[/b]
For the most part, though, the Democratic agenda remains decidedly center-left: Raise taxes on the rich, and use the money to help the middle class and poor. Protect civil rights. Expand educational access. Regulate Wall Street, and fight climate change. Expand health insurance using the current system. And compromise with Republicans when necessary. The radical agenda is the Republican agenda: Make climate change worse, unlike almost every other conservative party in the world. Aggravate inequality. [link=https://twitter.com/DLeonhardt/status/1040571592080875520]Sabotage health-insurance markets.[/link] Run up the deficit. Steal a Supreme Court seat. Keep dark-skinned citizens from voting. Protect Trumps lawlessness.
If you consider yourself a moderate whether you lean slightly right or slightly left your choice in this years midterms is clear.
And if you consider yourself a leftist, I understand you are probably frustrated that the Democrats wont go further.-

I actually thought a more people were posting in here. The news cycle is like kicking a dead horse. Trump’s gonna Trump day in and day out. So at a certain point if you’ve seen one car crash you’ve seen them all. or maybe we’re in a calm before the storm of midterms.
-
I think the appeal of Harris>Booker>Warren is that we’ve seen them on TV in hearings really turning the screws. Biden is the same way but says some nutty things and is a bit unpredictable. The dems will need a strong leader who is not going to take any bullshit. Politics can be a very dirty sport and the dems needs an athlete. I would very much like a return to boring politics from ’20-24 and just want a leader with a normal moral compass and as little drama as possible.

Ross Douthat worrying about the dilemma of Republicans pushing through a Kavanaugh confirmation as an anti-woman action. They might win the war on choice and abortion and lose a large number of voters as a result.
Ross Douthat is a very conservative Catholic.
[link=https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/19/opinion/christine-blasey-ford-kavanaugh-senate-hearing.html]https://www.nytimes.com/2…gh-senate-hearing.html[/link]
While on the surface it is the embryos fate that seems to be at stake, the sociologist Kristin Luker wrote in 1984, the abortion debate is actually about the meaning of womens lives.
in reality abortion restriction is a means to a different end: The restraint of womens choices, the restriction of their sexual freedom, their subordination to the rule of fathers and husbands and patriarchy writ large.
In its targets the #MeToo movement has made no partisan distinctions; if anything, it has probably ended the careers of more prominent liberal pigs than right-wing men. But for reasons of political expedience, conservatives have been more likely to make excuses for their predators, and indeed have elevated one of the more prominent examples to the White House. That elevation, and the Trumpification of the right it has required, has accelerated the [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/17/opinion/trump-women-race.html]political polarization of the sexes[/link], so that what was once a milder gender gap is now an extraordinary gulf.
And having that long-awaited victory accomplished by a male judicial appointee confirmed under a cloud of #MeToo suspicion seems like a good way to cement a perception thats fatal to the pro-life movements larger purposes the perception that you cant be pro-woman and pro-life.-
Again, meaningless terms like “pro woman”. All political action garbage and lies.
You really mean, pro-women acting like men. Those are the women no men want to be around, usually = old and ugly, and with an attitude to boot.
Cooperation and harmony is what biology teaches, and sane people know, about men and women. That’s not what the left teaches. Which is why we see what we see in this decaying society right now.-

Welcome to Merca, Land of Fear, home of the really scared. The Cultural War on steroids with fear and loathing as the primary tool.
From David Brooks:
Donald Trump and the other populists around the world have transformed politics in three gigantic ways. First, they told a different narrative. Their central story is that the good, decent people of the heartland are being threatened by immigrants, foreigners and other outsiders while corrupt elites do nothing.
Second, Trump and the other populists have overturned the traditional moral standards for how leaders are supposed to behave. Hes challenged basic norms of honesty, decency, compassion and moral conduct. He unabashedly exploits rifts in American society.
Third, they have ushered in a new conversation. In the 20th century the big debate was big government versus small government. Now, as many have noticed, the core debate is open versus closed. Do you favor basic openness, diversity and pluralism, or do you favor closed ethnic nationalism?
Along the way Trump has challenged Americas basic identity as a nation of immigrants. Hes challenged the American-led postwar international order.
It has now become evident that Republicans are better at politicizing cultural issues and Democrats are better at offering economic benefits to those who are struggling.
These days, culture is more important than economics.

Discovery of the devices came just after a big success for the pro-Trump Internet. Ever since Trumps inauguration, Trumps online base has amplified and [link=https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2017/06/14/on-the-trump-internet-an-incident-like-the-baseball-practice-shooting-has-long-been-a-forgone-conclusion/?utm_term=.2e521cf76d48]fed a meme claiming[/link] that violent leftist mobs present a major, immediate threat to the safety of the president and all of his supporters. During the confirmation process for Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, that meme became the mainstream conservative reaction to protesters who opposed Kavanaughs elevation to the Supreme Court. False-flag theories have probably always been popular among conspiracy theorists, who can attempt to discredit literally any event that proves inconvenient to their worldview.

It’s like maybe it was supposed to look like mail. I don’t pretend to know what goes on in the head of the #MAGABomber. -
No one knows who is responsible for the “pseudo bombs” this week. Just like no one knows who sent all the Ricin to many republicans homes. Huh… minimal coverage or concerns from the left media. But now… the sky is falling. However, I believe FBI will find both perpetrators. It is so difficult to hide or not leave a trail. It’s a sick individual or a few sick people in a group on both ends. Why the Wasserman return address? I don’t get that. Maybe one of her friends that got burnt by her, did it. It should be investigated. We better get an answer from both issues.
The 7k plus coming to the border? Curious to see how Mexico will handle the rush from their ports or entry/return. There are a ton of males I see in the coverage from all Media stations. I see water cannons and/or detention camps being set up in the future. These costs should come out of the Democratic PACs budget. If they want them… pay for them. Step up and put your money where your mouth is. It does question how so many people were organized in such a short time and yet our media did not know about it until it was in progress. Very fishy to me.
-
Sure looks like Johnny Kasich is posturing like he’s gonna get in the primary.
-
The problem of all these refugees coming to the border can be handled without all the fanfare. The applicants can be processed at the border and denied passage or granted depending.
But the problem is that these refugees are always described as a large band of raving criminals coming at the border to invade America in order to enjoy free government handouts and to steal our homes out form under us or to murder our family members.
There is a better way to handle refugees other than spreading outright fear about them, criminalizing them and stripping their children from them to disappear so that some might never be reunited. That is unforgivable no matter the excuse.
These are people fleeing everything they own for their own countries because many of them live in fear and threats of murder. Our government policy helped create these issues. If we want less refugees maybe we should have a war on corruption and poverty and criminal governments in Central and South America. -

Can anyone tell me what policies Republicans are running on this election? Besides “Trumpism now and forever?” Let’s see, Trump promised a 10% tax cut before the election that’s not going to happen. Healthcare? Yes, after trying to repeal the ban on pre-existing conditions, now they are all in for pre-existing conditions protection. Even though many Republicans’ names are still on the lawsuit trying to repeal pre-existing conditions ban.
What else are they for? Tax cuts? Oh, I mentioned that already. What else?
Cue game show music for waiting forever. Time for some distractions in twits. What were we talking about again??? Oh, yeah, Trump. -

Suspected arrested. Not much known right now, but he is a registered Republican.
Mr. Sayoc, a registered Republican, has a lengthy criminal history in Florida dating back to 1991 that includes felony theft, drug and fraud charges, as well as being arrested and accused of threatening to use a bomb, public records show.
On Friday morning, the authorities surrounded a white van with pro-Trump stickers on it, and television news later showed images of the authorities hauling the van away on a truck underneath a tarp. But it remained unclear if the van belonged to Mr. Sayoc.
And I worked a sh*t-ton of internal moonlighting last week. It’s gonna be a big paycheck you owe me.

Oh, oh. Pence got intel that the caravan is funded by Leftist radicals. Must be George Soros.
Vice President Mike Pence descended on the southwest as part of a midterm rallying blitz, bringing with him a warning that the migrant caravan is being funded by outside, leftist groups, citing intel said to be provided by foreign partners and a phone call with a Central American leader.
“What the president of Honduras told me is that the caravan was organized by leftist organizations, political activists within Honduras, and he said it was being funded by outside groups, and even from Venezuela,” Pence told Fox News in an interview late Friday in Yuma, Arizona. “So the American people, I think, see through this – they understand this is not a spontaneous caravan of vulnerable people.”
The Honduran President said it so it must be true. Honduras has a very long history of humanitarian leaders, concerned about its most vulnerable citizens after all. Lefties taking advantage of the permanently unhappy poor.

There are more. -
A lot of generality. I’m talking specific policy. You can’t just say foreign policy. Thats laughable.
That’s like somebody saying you’re not doing a good job at work and you ask why and they respond with “your reads.”

Constantly lying and establishing conspiracy theories as viable replacement of fact based based reality

Basically he is a total price of Sheet
A bad person American and bad human being
-
so the guy is president and the only thing you can find fault with is his character? you can’t name any specific policies, that’s pretty weak.
Like I said I don’t think he’s the greatest thing ever but if your criticisms are super broad and generic it’s hard to take them seriously.
you didn’t even say he’s a bad president you just said he’s a bad person. -
Quote from hey
Hes human excrement.
Thanks for the concise explanation of the policy decisions you disagree with.
-
I disagree with pretty much all of them. But that wasnt what I was posting about. Ive disagreeed with other republican presidents before on policy. But there never been this much of an embarrassment. He carries himself like human excrement. Everything he says is meant to provoke his base, incite the worst elements of society, and promote chaos. Hes trash.
-
typo. Theyve never been this much of an embarrassment..
-
OK but the fact that you can’t come up with discrete policy decisions shows you’re likely participating in group think of “hes a bad guy” versus understanding policies he’s pushing for and disagreeing with them.
It’s like when you see interviews of people and they ask why don’t you like president trump. They can’t tell you specific policies, they just list generalities like this. It just shows you don’t know enough about the issues to even say if you think they’re doing a good job or not and just parroting what someone else has told you. Which is extremely dangerous.
I mean we’ve had 3 posters now who have failed to bring up any specific elements of policy and had stayed broad or talked about his character.

World affairs
Im against his distancing us from our allies particularly NATO and his collusion with Putin to try to further divide the European Union
It seems likes trumps foreign policy goals are more aligned with Russia than the USA
Domestically he is a divider but I guess that goes towards his character but the constant barrage of lies and conspiracies will have a negative on everyone
His rhetoric emboldens the fringe of his followers and the past few days has showed us what can happen as a white nationalist open fires on a synagogue and an ardent trump supporter attempts to eliminate the democratic establishment with pipe bombs
These fringe lunatics are not supported by trump or the republicans but his rhetoric emboldens them to do crazy things
As far as his economic policies I believe at this time are still up in the air
The economy is very good but it was also very good and aging steam under Obama last 3 years so to give trump all the credit after 2 years is too soon but I am open to at least seeing if his hard stance on trade works
Thats about all I will give him as of 2 years into this
-
There’s something I can work with!
I agree with a lot of your points. I however do think Europe has been pretty poor with assisting us globally. The UN overall is basically everyone watching as the US does something and then complaining about it.
I definitely agree about the economy and time will tell about that. I will also say we’ve had a bull market for a quite a while and have been due for a correction which if it occurs I wouldn’t attribute to trump but more normal cyclical nature.
Agree about rhetoric. I also don’t understand his point yesterday about armed guards. Every public institution cannot have armed guards. I think an unfortunate reality is that the freedom we have makes it possible to commit atrocities. It is horrible but not sure what you can do to stop it. Get rid of guns and other wackos will try to use other means, as we saw this week.
-
I think media could do a much better job not giving people who commit atrocities attention. You can cover the tragedy without going into a week long back story about the monsters life and give them the attention they were seeking.

What kind of country are the Republicans trying to create for us? It begins in fear and ends in fear. Fear is the business plan. This is the playbook of the president.
[link=https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/27/opinion/sunday/donald-trump-fear.html]https://www.nytimes.com/2…donald-trump-fear.html[/link]
As long as Ive covered politics, Republicans have been trying to scare me.
Sometimes, it has been about gays and transgender people and uppity women looming, but usually it has been about people with darker skin looming.
Theyre coming, always coming, to take things and change things and hurt people.
Donald Trump cuts out the middleman. He handles the dirty work himself and revels in it. In the old days, presidents let their hatchet men stir up the racist skulduggery behind the scenes. So when Republican lawmakers complain about Trumps white nationalist rhetoric, what they are really saying is that they prefer a more subtle racism.
When I covered the 88 race, I watched Lee Atwater and Roger Ailes concoct the scheme to bring down Michael Dukakis by making Willie Horton his running mate, as Atwater put it. The ads made by the Bush campaign and outside groups centered on Horton, a black criminal who broke into a Maryland house, raped a white woman and stabbed her husband while on a weekend furlough from a Massachusetts prison.
The only question is whether we depict Willie Horton with a knife in his hand or without it, Ailes told Time magazine.
One Fox producer under Ailes said they called it riling up the crazies.
In the documentary, those around Ailes marveled at his relentless talent for pouring gas on a fire, for stoking the paranoia and fear that would keep viewers on the hook.

The answer to the thread question is simple. “Nobody” or maybe “Another loser.”
-
I did specify “bullet points.” I thought paragraphs of policy points would be a tl;dr with this crowd.
Let’s see, performance with Putin in Helsinki showing our obsequious President next to his real leader.
Pulled out of Paris accord because Climate Change is a Chinese hoax and conspiracy to make America weak.
His bomb throwing regarding NATO. OK, so he didn’t pull out so nothing has changed? But talking about what countries owe us as if he’s running an American protection racket in Europe? [size=”0″]Everything has changed, Europe knows America is not the leader here.[/size]
[size=”0″]His whole tariff thing. “Re-negotiating” NAFTA essentially changing nothing but the name only?[/size]
Hepulled out of the JCPOA & reimposed sanctions on Iran without justification.
We are supporting the Hodeidah offensive in Yemen.
He seems to have committed fully to an open-ended mission in Syria with no end game or strategy.
He is indulging the Israeli government as it guns down unarmed protesters week after week.
He’s relocated the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem,
He has pulled out of providing Palestinian civilians of essential aid.
He’s joined in an effort to cover for the Saudi governments brutal and vicious murder or a journalist.
Let’s not forget the UN Assembly outright laughed at him collectively and in unison. America the leader.
His blustering with Kim scaring Americans about a nuclear attack? OK, so everyone’s still alive but Kim still has a nuclear program & now has more international prestige.
I see no significant improvement in Afghanistan or Iraq due to his antics.
He’s a narcissist, not a leader.
That is not an exhaustive list of his destructive behavior, but it gives us a picture of how much worse things have become in the last ten months. This does not even scratch the surface of his lack of any viable policy.
Unless you think his Twits are good Policy.

Quote from Dr. ****er
When you constantly lie and defame me (not you so much, DICOM), what do you expect? I have made more lifetime predictions on this board than anyone can dream of, and at huge odds they’ve come through.
I’ve been willing to have a real conversation for a LONG TIME here too. MSK tried with that thread. Cuda has tried. But the brainless leftists ruin it every time. You can go cry again when Trump wins, yet again, and again and again
I stopped counting he won so many times and the hysteria continued on the board, instead of honest discussion and admission that the hacks know nothing.
To be defamed implies you are of good character. Are you sure you can write things like “retards” and still maintain good character?

Sherrod Brown is a great VP pick … especially if the Pres Dem candidate is female or non-white.
He’s Ohio with a good relationship with labor/ working class. He won’t upstage the candidate.
And, if he he wins in 2018 and Cordray takes the Governor’s House for Dems then him being the VP nominee into 2020 wouldn’t cost dems a seat.-
My worry is about the fickle snowflake no-show voters as much as candidates who should represent values. I frankly dont care about the age of the candidates so long as their compass points in the correct direction & they believe in something other than just money or pretend positions. That includes the rare as dodo a Republican stands for something.
Stand up for something good. Stand up for all Americans. If the voters stand up the politicians will follow.

I have issues with bumper sticker frenzy. It’s a warning in my eyes when people do this. Should they be profiled and targeted because of the right to express? It makes you wonder. The Bomber guy seems to actually hates the left. He needs to go away for a long time for what he did. So should the Utah guy who did the Ricin a few months ago to the Republicans. Arrested Oct 3rd… Huh… not much news about that. Wonder why?-

Huh? He was just indicted on 7 counts 2 weeks ago & his trial is set for Dec 26. Took me 5 seconds to find stories.

How fast do you think these things go? You think Democrats and Liberals are slow-walking his indictment and trial?
Likely he’s going to be found guilty & sent away for some years, as he deserves.
