  • Away rotations in area to which I have no ties?

Posted by jvduf on February 10, 2021 at 12:46 pm

Hey all! I am a DO student on the west coast hoping to go into a DR program in the North East. My ideal programs, due to location and available activities, are those that are further north like Maine, Vermont, Dartmouth, etc. I have zero ties to the area and have no real idea how to show that I really do desire to live and possibly practice in the region in the future. Would it be wise to try and do an away rotation there? Would it be better to simply try and elucidate my reasoning on paper?

If you’re able to do an away, I would highly recommend it. Programs have a limited number of interview slots, and they mostly tend to invite people they think they have a good chance of matching. Most east cost programs (especially in less desirable places like Maine, Vermont, and Dartmouth) will find it hard to believe someone from the west coast would rank them high.

I am the opposite (east cost applicant looking to move west), and I only got one west coast interview despite getting interviews at top east cost programs.

I would also send letters of interest once you submit your ERAS application to the northeast programs you’re interested in and briefly explain your interest.

I am also an east coast applicant looking to move west!! Did you do an away? Did you end up matching to a west coast program, if you don’t mind my asking? Any advice? Mostly I’m just wondering if I would even make it both into a prelim and rads program on the west coast with no ties.

No, I ended up matching to an East Coast program. I ranked my one west coast program #1, but it wasn’t meant to be.

I didn’t do an away since I was an M4 when COVID was still new. I would think aways are the only way to show programs that you’re interested.

        Good luck with the applications!

See if you can make the jump for fellowship. Consider investing in a california license. It’s a pain to get and having it helps to show that you are committed to the cause.
