Andrew Yang: It’s time for physicians to pass on the torch to NP + AutomationWhat does everyone think of Andrew Yang’s audiobook, particular the section on healthcare..
The war on normal people: [link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZ0f4GlbSUw]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZ0f4GlbSUw[/link] (5 hours 57 minutes)
Key points
1. He cites his work in adopting EMR systems in the early-2000s, stating that the physicians he worked, particular surgeons, were more interested in getting on the golf course rather than doing the best for patients and adopting new technology
2. He says being a physician should no longer be a way to become wealthy. You should have a comfortable life, but it should not be the path to the riches
3. He says physicians are to blame regarding rising healthcare costs, ordering unnecessary tests to cover themselves
4. He says that most of the work that a PCP can and should be done by automation + NP
5. He says it’s the fault of the AAMC for artificially reducing medical school spots to keep salaries up. He sites that he new very bright people that couldn’t do well in organic chemistry were rejected from med school, all over a course that most medical students should use
Overall, the point Yang makes is that we should thank physicians for their work up to this point, but recognize they should no longer call the shots in one’s healthcare, and instead they should pass on the touch and accept lower compensation.I brought the thread here to hear what the AuntMinnie community has to say about Andrew Yang’s ideas.
