As a piece of good news, the hospitals I am on staff at are very proactive in getting ready for an expected influx of patients.  The state approved them for additional beds, they rustled up vents and supplies and have made contingency plans in terms of staffing so they can stand up additional ventilator beds on what are currently regular floors. Now, the military saying goes ‘no battle plan survives the first contact with the enemy’*, but so far I am optimistic that we are not going to get caught by complete suprise if ‘the wave’ gets to us (if it ever does). Also, if history is any guide, hospitals in the US are pretty good in accepting patients from other facilities, so if it comes to the point that individual (or regional) systems get strained, I expect patients and resources to be redistributed.

Unanticipated positive outcome: No one cares about the Democratic primaries at all now.

In other news, COVID has eliminated 2 of the major problems of modern times.

First: climate change.

The carbon emissions levels fell off a cliff. Greta Thunberg has achieved her goal and can finally go back to finishing high school (online, of course). Pollution maps show massively decreased levels over China, which will prevent many premature deaths in the long term. The canals in Venice are running clear, full of fish, just like in the Stone Age.

Second: terrorism.

There is no reason left whatsoever for any terror attack. People are holed up in their homes, going out only to fight for toilet paper at the supermarket. Travel is nonexistent, unemployment is soaring, the economy is tanking. Soldiers are patrolling the streets in France and Italy, hard borders are resurrected all across Europe. This goes beyond the wildest dreams of any terrorist. In his corner of hell, bin Laden can finally unfurl the “Mission Accomplished” banner.

I don’t want to derail the positivity of this thread.  But I think #2 is *very* wishful thinking.  I am positive that our enemies, terrorist and other, are using this time to plan, recruit, stockpile, etc… and if they have the opportunity to attack a military field hospital they will.

A happy Saturday to everyone.

Hot off the presses, a game-changer. The FDA approves a test that can detect COVID in 45 minutes. Test is made by a private company.

Shipping next week. No word yet on quantity immediately available.

That changes everything. That gets people out of quarantine and back to work. That directs therapy and resources. That brings the nation and the world roaring back to life.

South Korea also has a fast diagnostic kit. 10 minutes according to reports, planning to export up to 300,000 kits a week.

US mortality rates have fallen from 4% in early March to 1.5% as of yesterday.

My friends in the ICU are trying chloraquine and its variants wherever possible. Countries like Belgium are also doing widespread clinical trials. In days we are going to have a tremendous amount of new information.

Google has made their COVID website. Its a fairly simple portal. A great thing it does is curate a lot of useful items about the virus and how to deal with it in a reliable way. Theres quite a bit of misinformation out there, and its immensely helpful to have a reliable source.

I am not a rah-rah patriotic type of person typically, but I fundamentally believe if all  of America, with its brain power, ingenuity and resources, comes together with single-minded determination – will defeat the virus sooner rather than later.  I think we are seeing that happen.

Or it continues to increase the number of “cases” that people report and are so frantic about, I honestly am living in a nightmare of non critical thinking; some guys I think are intelligent have absolutely not wisdom it’s all irrational and unbelievably irresponsible reporting at this point.

The number of cases means NOTHING in and of itself. We can test for anything and it may, or may not, matter in the big picture. Certainly not to shut a world economy down and destroy a majority of people’s lives and livelihoods. Why is this basic idea so hard for morons to understand?

That part is what concerned me. It’s been 1.5% for about a week now. It went from 3.6% to 1.5 and its stayed there since

That despite more testing,

By which I mean we accerated testing but death rate kept up.
So it too was accelerating! Meaning, the spread accelerated 1-2 weeks ago!!!!!

Keeping a close eye on it

We can win instantly if we stop fearmongering. This is a nothing burger, big picture.
