2021 IR Independent University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) has an unexpected opening for the independent IR residency for the year 2021-2022. The IR training at UIHC provides a strong emphasis on clinical care and procedural training at a leading academic institution that will prepare the trainee for practice in either private or academic settings. The University of Iowa is approved by the ACGME for the Independent IR residency, IR Integrated residency and Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR). UIHC is a leading busy tertiary care hospital and level-1 trauma center, an American Cancer Society Center of Excellence, and a major transplantation center. Trainees will thus be exposed to broad spectrum of cases in interventional oncology, vascular disease, GI, GU, womens health and pediatric interventions. The trainee will be expected to perform over 1000 VIR procedures during the year. The program has a very active clinical service, several outpatient clinics, and an inpatient service with active participation by all IR trainees, physician assistants, and nurse coordinators. The program focus is to combine imaging expertise with not only technical skills, but also clinical skills. Our trainees are involved in all aspects of patient care including image interpretation, evaluation of new patients, procedures, inpatient and outpatient care, and patient follow-up. In addition, there are many opportunities to be involved in research and participate in multidisciplinary boards (such as tumor boards).

A unique feature of our program is the close rapport between IR and vascular surgery, allowing the fellow to be closely involved in many aspects of peripheral arterial disease diagnosis and management. The fellow will have a 1-month rotation on vascular surgery, further enriching his/her experience in vascular care, including exposure to vascular interventions, carotid stenting and endovascular aneurysm repair. A new state-of-the art Childrens Hospital with robust Pediatric Interventional Radiology service, and multidisciplinary vascular anomaly clinic.
