All things Cleveland!

Getting in for the first post in the “After Hours” Forum.
Here’s where we (mostly me and [b]Dicom_Dan[/b] probably) will get to talk about the city; it’s local politics, activities, dining, and of course…. sports.
Hopefully there will be deep playoff runs by both the Cavs and the Indians this year to give lots to talk about.
I’d love to see another Championship for the CLE in 2017!
And for the Browns …. well, there’s always next year!

Michael Symon get’s talked up a lot but I’m more of a Jonathan Sawyer fan. I’ve eaten at a couple of his places. Noodlecat is got some good eats and Trentina right on CWRU campus is excellent. Trentina is a little stuffy but the OH strip steak is out of sight.

Great way to start the baseball season. Tribe sweeps Texas with nothing less than a ninth inning grand slam from Frankie Lindor.

Last night was a good Cleveland sports TV night. I flipped back and forth between the Cavs whooping up on the Celtics and the Indians Rangers game. Was almost going to go to bed, but stayed up to watch the last of the Indians …. I was rewarded 🙂-
Could it be? Full time Galley Boys in the CLE. If anyone is ever around the Akron area and you’re looking for some drive-in style fast food, hit up a Swensons.
“Swensons menu goes well past the Galley Boy. In addition to single, double and triple burgers, there are hot dogs, Sloppy Joe, fried bologna and fish sandwiches. There is also pulled pork, grilled cheese, egg salad and a shrimp dinner, believe it or not, paired with sides like onion rings, fried mushrooms and potato teezers. All of the above gets washed down with one of literally dozens of phosphates, milkshakes and soft drinks, including the odd but loveable California and Florida concoctions. The mile-long menu is the antithesis of the modern, succinct fast food roster.”

Very difficult to follow if you are not familiar with all the deals he refers to.-
Yeah. Roldo writes to a Clevelander audience. He’s a local curmudgeon.

it is Cleveland orientated for sure. Gateway foundation, Sin Tax, Jacobs family all Cleveland stuff. However, I think the gist is that paying for sports teams and facility upgrades really doesn’t help the local community. That story is probably true in many communities.
Like there’s a big drive to upgrade where the Cavs play at the Q. I don’t see why? Who gives a hoot if they put a nice glass facade around the place. Indians and Browns want their cut of upgrades too.

Here in Columbus, when the Blue Jackets started up, there was a tax levy to build Nationwide Arena. The promoters of the levy (the big business types who would profit) said that the tax levy was the ONLY way to do this, and without it, we wouldn’t get the franchise.
The levy went down hard.
Few days after – the big business types announced they had found a way to do it.
Liars, just liars.
I still can’t get over Cincinnatti destroying a perfectly functional dual purpose stadium to build two vanity projects for the pro teams. On the taxpayers dime.
This is corruption.

This is corruption.Minneapolis did the same thing. The voters even passed a city ordinance via initiated measure to enjoin the city from spending any more money on private ballparks. The cit just went around the law and spent a billion on a glass enclosed jewel encrusted football stadium which they then handed to their sucky team.

Go Cavs. Looks like King James is looking to drop the hammer on the subservient Canadian team tonight. It’s getting fugly for the hosers.
Done deal. Clean sweep on the Raptors. -
Do or die? Cavs in 7? LBJ looks like he primed to give it all tonight.

Listening to some local NPR news this morning. Supposedly the new LED lights at Progressive field are making it easier for players to see the ball. So this would take a long time to get stats on but if correct they expect LEDs to make batting averages go up.

Tribes catching fire lately. Impressive hitting from Ramirez, 9 straight games with multiple hits. First Indian since 1936.
Ramirez, with his single in the ninth, became the fourth Indians player since 1913 to record two hits in nine straight games. The three others are Roy Hughes in 1936, Riggs Stephenson in 1924 and Hall of Famer Tris Speaker in 1926.

Finally transatlantic travel returns to Cleveland.
United might actually find some pressure to Restore some trans Atlantic service.

I went on Google Flights and didn’t see it on there yet. However, I did notice it’s only $320 non-stop from Pittsburgh to KEF(Iceland). That seems pretty reasonable if you don’t mind driving 100 miles to Pittsburgh.
Update: Make it 2 airlines with service to Iceland. WOW Airline will also offer service

Cleveland punches well above its weight in the food scene. For a smaller city there are tons of great restaurants along all ends of the price spectrum.
It has the lowest chain penetration of all major US cities which allows space for independents to flourish.

Sound the trumpets, peal the bells! The [link=http://www.clevelandorchestra.com/]Cleveland Orchestra[/link], which many consider one of the finest ensembles in the nation and the world, turns 100 this year.
But dont necessarily expect the orchestra, which plays two soberly sensible programs at Carnegie Hall this week, to join the clamor. There is no major commissioning project, such as you might see from other orchestras; no nationally televised gala.
…
The city and community have backed the orchestra through thick and thin. Mostly thin, in recent decades, though Cleveland seems finally to be rebounding economically.

The latest Cleveland foodie hipster fad: [link=http://wcpn.ideastream.org/news/local-foodies-have-found-the-next-big-thing-gas-station-hummus]Gas Station Hummus[/link]
My FB feed is littered with comments about the best.-
Actually if you like hummus we had some delivery from the Simple Greek. It’s right in the midtown strip with all the other restaurants. Little bit garlicy but pretty tasty. The Gyro/Chicken wasn’t bad either.
I do remember seeing what you’re talking about on the news. Mama Mary’s Hummus sold at Sunoco. Long drive to Olmsted Falls for $4 hummus though.
[link=http://www.cleveland19.com/story/36899546/why-has-gas-station-hummus-gone-viral-on-facebook-in-cleveland]http://www.cleveland19.co…-facebook-in-cleveland[/link]-
Also … new cavs looked good yesterday. Trade away 6 players at the trade deadline and bring in a bunch of hustling youngsters.
They really laid it to the Celtics in their debut.-
I happened to make it down to the Flats East Bank Friday night. This area is much nicer than what it used to be. However, it was pretty empty so I’m not sure how long all these new restaurants are for this world. We did eat at Alley Cat Oyster Bar. Pretty good, however, IMO it’s a bit overpriced.
[link]http://www.flatseastbank.com/[/link]-
Waaaay overpriced. I love Zack, but Alley Cat is way more money than it’s worth.
But as for the East Bank… the bottom line is that Cleveland isn’t growing in population as a region. There isn’t room for another entertainment district. We never seem to learn that lesson.
In the 1980 there was The Flats… then the Warehous District killed the Flats in the 90s .. then East 4th by the Q killed the Warehouse District in the 2000s …. East 4th is getting killed by W. 25 in Ohio City …. and now the Flats come back and want to get in on the action.
But there are still the same number of people living in the area. These big bar and giant restaurants needs lots of people to keep them buzzing …. you can’t add another 2000 seat club and not expect it to parasitize somewhere else.
(One of the things I am very happy about with Gordon Square, W 65th neighborhood is that there has been a conscious effort to stay small with the businesses. The restaurants and bars are limited seating places …. it works better for organic growth and if one happens to fail then it’s not a blight on the area)-
It’s probably time of year too. No games going on so less people downtown. No boats coming in from the lake. But it really is a nice area, outdoor firepits and all. The Staples are the Staples. I’ll have to make my way down Detroit Ave one day and check out gordon square.
Next time I’m down on a Friday during Lent I’m taking myself back to blue pointe.

I’ve played gold with Bernie once or twice at the club but here’s a Cleveland idea that seems DOA. Who the F wants to pay $975 a month to “subscribe” to an Audi A4. You never own the car and you’re out $12grand a year. Volvo is doing something similar but I think it’s like $600 to get a $40k XC60. Just buy a car at that price.
[link=http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/02/drive_options_bernie_moreno.html#incart_m-rpt-1]http://www.cleveland.com/…no.html#incart_m-rpt-1[/link]
“With Drive Options now in Northeast Ohio, buying or leasing a single vehicle the old-fashioned way might go the way of buying a music CD.”
The dealership says 11 people have already subscribed to Drive Optons in the program’s first three days. Membership plans range from $975 a month for access to cars that retail between $40,000-$50,000 such as an Audi A4, BMW X3 or Mercedes C300 Cabriolet. $1,795 a month gets you keys to cars that sell for $70,000 and up such as the Maserati Ghibli, Range Rover Sport or BMW M4 convertible.

The new flight starts July 9, and runs daily, with flights leaving Cleveland at 8:30 a.m., arriving in Salt Lake City four hours later, at 10:25 a.m. Mountain Time. The return flight leaves Salt Lake City at 5 p.m., landing in Cleveland at 10:50 p.m.

this is no good. Family services in Cleveland being protested now. It certainly looks like they’ve had more than 1 kid get killed by abusive parents over the past few years. Recently they found the one child buried in the back yard, and I believe the social services person was taking food stamps to look the other way. This other kid was killed by the mom and boyfriend has a laundry list of documented signs of abuse. They did nothing.

Montana has had a spate of this for like the last three years……per capita, we’ve got to be among the highest. Horrific.
BTW, what’s going on with Lue and the Cavs? I heard he’s taking a LOA to attend to some health issues… -
they looked fine last night without him. All it said was chest pains and health issues but supposedly it’s unknown as to why. I could only guess heart issue but maybe it’s just stress, anxiety, panic attacky stuff.

Cleveland is just trying to catch up to NYC. Every five years the child services agency loses another kid to abuse while their marginally qualified social workers looked the other way. Each time the agency gets re-named and re-organized with a new political appointee at the top. At the ground level, nothing ever changes.

Here we Brownies, here we go!
[link=https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/odell-beckham-traded-from-giants-to-browns-in-league-shifting-offseason-blockbuster/]Browns trade for Odell Beckham jr. in league-shifting offseason blockbuster[/link]
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the trade involves the Browns sending their first-round pick in 2019 (No. 17 overall), one of the Browns third-round picks this year (their second one) as well as safety [link=https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/2136536/jabrill-peppers]Jabrill Peppers[/link].
It’s a stunner of a deal and, frankly, an incredible steal for the Browns. They lose a potential stud and former first-round pick in terms of Peppers but their offense is suddenly LOADED.
[link=https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/2080032/baker-mayfield]Baker Mayfield[/link], who should have been the 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, will be throwing to Beckham, [link=https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/1824833/jarvis-landry]Jarvis Landry[/link] (OBJ’s teammate at LSU), [link=https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/2180420/antonio-callaway]Antonio Callaway[/link] and [link=https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/2136474/david-njoku]David Njoku[/link]. Not too shabby, and you can throw [link=https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/players/playerpage/2131579/nick-chubb]Nick Chubb[/link] into the mix in the backfield as well. This is suddenly a filthy offense the Browns are trotting out onto the field as they hope to contend for the division title.
It’s an aggressive-as-all-get-out play by GM John Dorsey, and it probably won’t be cheap. As CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported on CBS Sports HQ on Tuesday night, there should be plenty of issues that Odell has to deal with in terms of his contract. Beckham was not, La Canfora reported, a part of the trade talks between the two teams as the negotiations were going along.

The odds on the Browns winning the Super Bowl next year went from 25-1 to 14-1 with the trade and acquisition of OBJ.
I said that before last season that the Browns would be .500 for the year, and actually had a five dollar wager on it…I came within one game of collecting.
With Pittsburgh imploding, I look for the Browns to win their division next year, and go on a run…
Calling it now…with the changes going on in Cleveland and Detroit, it’ll be a Browns vs. Lions Super Bowl in 2021.-

mayfield will get killed and he is an interception machine as it is
odell will spend more time trying to be outrageous on social media then he will blame everyone else when things turn bad
In the end ….. they are still the Browns

Been on the boat exactly twice. Last night and one nice day a couple weeks ago.
Lake Erie water levels so high (all time record) that my dock is under water by 4″
-
I live by Mentor Marsh and the boaters are all experiencing the same. Water levels are 2x as high and docks are underwater. I was out walking the dog. Some of the people are stacking palettes on the docks to make it to their boats.
-
Traveling through the area. Was just in Cleveland for two days. Saw the flooding on the news. Besides the rain we stopped and loved Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Thought they did a great job especially identifying the origins, influence of gospel blues etc as well as giving credit to the African American influence in the early days and origins of the music. Also great to see some original scores or lyrics by musicians in their own writing w their edits. It was a place I always wanted to get to and finally did. Also everyone was very cordial and friendly something we don’t see too much of in the NE.
-
I have only been to the Rock Hall for charity events. I’ve never actually done the full tour.
Even though a friend is a director there.-
It’s a cool place. I would recommend to anyone to stop by the Lake View Cemetary too. We have 1 of 4 Tiffany Chapels on the planet. It’s really neat to hear the guides talk about the designs. Everything is very symbolic and meticulously thought out. There’s meaning behind everything from the coffered ceiling to the designs of the flooring.

So All Star stuff is done. A quick lread about the game.
“Besides, on a night like this, when the game was played to its purest level, who needs a reminder that the regular season and all of those home runs will soon be resuming to a ballpark near you?
Take a bow, Cleveland.”

Ok. Don’t get my hopes up but the Browns looked pretty crispy tonight. Granted it’s preseason but I think we got a few hits. Greedy Williams and Mack Wilson both looked good.

We drubbed the Spankees last night. That was like a home run fiesta.

And Stipe Miocic brings the UFC title back by TKO’ing Cormier.

That blows. I cant think of a way you could get that back other signing up for like Hulu TV. I don’t think STO has any over the air coverage. I like to listen to Hammy call gAmes so I use the MLB at bat app. Like $20 a year and you can stream the audio. It’s great if your on vacation and want to listen.

I saw that. The people of Cleveland still vote for him. Not sure. Is he even a good mayor?

Unfortunately we get the first debate but it’s over at the CCF/CWRU medical school campus.

I’m hoping the canadian border will be open by then so I can get out of dodge

ever sail the distance of the lake? From Toledo out out Buffalo or vice versa. That seems like it’d be a fun trip. See the Ohio shore.
-
As you get East the member of anchorages on the US side get fewer
West side of the lake you can bounce on the south shore in 20 miles hops…Toledo, Huron,Sandusky , the islands , Vermilion , Lorain , Rocky River , Cleveland , Mentor, Geneva
But as you get east you need to put in longer days… 40-50 miles… Conneaut , Erie PA, Dunkirk NY, Buffalo
-
So not something you can do in a day. I’m not very familiar with speed to distance on the water. We actually have a nice Marina in Mentor.
I’ve only been out of Mentor, Grand River, and Ashtabula on motor boats for fishing. It’s pretty hairy getting in and out the Mentor lagoon though. It’s a tight fit. -

A classic old school cafeteria-style eastern euorpean fare restaurant in my neighborhood … Sokolowski’s University Inn closing for good.
I wonder just how many tens of thousands of calories of pierogis, kielbasa, paprikash, and butter I’ve consumed there over the years. My father, now in his late 80s, used to take his clients there back in the 60s.
It was one of the featured restaurants when Anthony Bourdain did his Cleveland ‘No Reservations’ episode. [image]https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif[/image]

-
Cedar Point is a bit over an hour. If you went west it’s kind of fun to hit the islands. You can catch a ferry out from by Cedar Point to Put-in-bay/South bass island or Kelleys island.
In Cleveland proper I feel like there’s a lot to do. I would definitely go to the Lakeview Cemetery and check out the Garfield Memorial, a lot of famous tombstones, and the Louis Tiffany Chapel. i believe there are 4 Tiffany chapels on earth and we have one. If you get a good guide it’s very Dan Brown too. Every little detail has meaning. It’s really cool.
The Museums, botanical garden by mid-town. Rock Hall. Science Center. Catch a baseball game. If you like outdoors you have anything from the Lake Erie, to places like Cuyahoga national forest. It’s fairly easy to get around. You have Play House Square, comedy clubs. Concerts at places like house of blues. The Foundation Room at HOB is cool. I think CLE is pretty strong with the food scene. You’ve got various breweries. I kind of like Momocho Mexican. Soho chicken. Little Italy has some really good food.-

Tough loss but they showed they have strong upside moving forward

That was a bad no call by the refs. Even if it wasnt for the fumble into the end zone. That was text book leading with the helmet and helmet to helmet contact. It wasnt even close. You could see it in real-time.

Some of the drinkin in the driveway lyrics
Well the man is like clockwork
When summer hits the street
Wearin’ an old Skynard tank top two sizes small
Sweating in the heat
In his trusty old lawn chair
With his cooler by his side
He fires up a mule and surveys his domain
Through some seriously bloodshot eyes…(Chorus)
Yeah he’s drinking in the driveway
Ah, how time flies
When you’re drinking in the driveway
Watching the world go by…Michael Stanley's special farewell message to you🎸 pic.twitter.com/7shKkBJBjd

I met Michael at the hospital years ago. One of the women in the radiology office wanted his autograph so badly and wanted me to ask … but it would have been inappropriate in my position as a treating doc.
So she had Mark Robbin pretend to “accidentally” stumble into the room and ask instead.
He was gracious and signed it happily. -
Photo from Fairport dog beach. Lots of ice around the beach head.

Looks like tomorrow is being named Michael Stanley Day in the CLE.

Thank god for the man who put the white lines on the highway.

Another opening day L.
Meh … no biggie.
I had to cover the evening shift until 7p last night. I turned on 1100 and had Tom Hamilton calling the game in background while I worked… and it was wonderfully relaxing even with a loss 🙂 -
After work we just cooked a few hot dogs and listened to the radio calls from Hamilton. Id still prefer an opening day W. Sets a good tone.

I actually like to head over to Mentor Beach Park or Mentor Lagoons Wildlife area when it blowing hard. The lake really can get whipped up with waves. We fished with a guy in South Carolina who was ex coast guard. He said that Lake Erie could get worse than the Bering Sea. Not necessarily ferocity but it can change conditions really quickly.

When I got certified to allowed to bare boar sai charter, the guy who was my instructor had been UK special forces and then spent 20 years doing SAR in the Mediterranean. His home port was Carnaevon in Wales.
I told him that we sailed on Lake Erie and at first he was pretty dismissive, having no geography of the area. He just heard the word “lake” and thought we were inland lake sailors.
As the week went on I told him more … that it’s 300 miles long, 50+ miles across to to Canada,. He said “Damn! That’s bigger than the Irish Sea!”
(Lake Erie is also the most deadly of the Great Lakes. Because it is so shallow, wind effect generates more wave action more quickly. It can go from flat to 10-12 ft waves in a few hours. People in small boats get in trouble real fast.) -
Its Christmas and its 60 degrees and raining. Woof.

I did see the clip of him with the bucket o’ wings. However, they were Quaker Steak. So him thinking those are representative of the best wings in Cleveland is like me thinking I’m eating the best burger in Milwaukee if at the airport McDonalds.

Ever go to any dog friendly places in CLE. I was thinking about maybe stopping in at the Terrestrial Brewing Company. Dogs allowed in tap room if theyre well behaved. Im missing my dog but Im getting to watch another dog this weekend while my nephew is visiting university of Cincinnati. So was thinking of doing something fun.

Terrestrial is walking distance from my place. Dog friendly inside and there’s a de facto dog park just out the side door.
We’re there all the time.
I do trivia night there sometimes too.

Would u recommend cleveland for a long weekend getaway in the warmer months? Can you give me a “48 hours in cleveland” top things to do and see/eat? How far from cedar point?
48 Hours in Cleveland – (presumes that Covid is over and things are “normal”). Best times are from June to October … I will also presume summer for this post.
Arrive Friday noon. Check in to the Hilton Downtown Cleveland or the Ritz Carlton. (If you’re a young partier and want a hipper option consider the Metropolitan at The 9)
Have a quick drink on the rooftop bar then head down to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. (It’s walkable from all 3 of those locations.) You’ll be done there just in time for an early happy hour. Head down to the east bank of the flats and have some oysters on the half shell at Alley Cat out on the deck. Watch a couple of the ships come up and down the Cuyahoga.
Go back to the hotel and get cleaned up.
Friday night dinner — If you just want to stay downtown, go to Urban Farmer or Mabel’s BBQ (Michael Symon’s low brow place).
But I would want to get out to the near west neighborhood of Tremont ( a 4 minute cab). If you have a big party, think about reserving the chef’s table at Dante. Or, try Cleveland’s best sushi right next door at Ginko. Or, if you didn’t hit Alley Cat earlier in the day, try the sister place Parallax.
Now you’re in Tremont and ready to party the rest of the night. Hit the Treehouse, a Cleveland old school Irish / hipster fusion place. If you want “real” Cleveland head to Prosperity Social Club, a great dive where you’ll feel like you woke up on the set of the Drew Carey Show. All within walking distance while in Tremont …. Barrio, The Spotted Owl, Bourbon Street Barrel Room, Forest City Brewery, The Flying Monkey, the Hi and Dry, Edison’s, Lava Lounge. Make a pub crawl out of it.
Go home. Sleep. Wake up hungover.
Saturday – Take a 2 mile walk or short cab in the morning over to the West Side Market, an old Easter European style stall market on W 25th st. While there have a coffee and a take-away crepe and a sausage on crusty bread and the best gyro in Cleveland.
Have a quick beer right nearby either at Market Garden Brewery or Town Hall. Then a quick ice cream cone at Mitchell’s just a block down the street.
If you didn’t eat at the WSM then think about a huge traditional cafeteria style eastern european meal at Sokolowki’s University Inn just across the bridge.
If the Indians are in town, catch a day game at Progressive field. If it’s your kind of thing, check out the Old Angle if there is an international soccer game and drink and cheer with the ex-pats.
If no Indians game, then for Saturday afternoon work your way just a bit further West to the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood. Take a nice long walk along the lake and beach at Edgewater park and have a drink at the new bar there. Then walk up the hill.
Have a drink at Stone Mad Irish or try some wine at Flight. Astoria for some tapas or Cleveland best pizza at Il Rione.
Saturday Night Dinner … do whichever option you didn’t choose on Friday.
There are a couple slightly divey places I like downtown. The Little Bar and the Map Room. Or you can hit East 4th and be with the bigger crowds on the foot-traffic only bar strip.
Sunday brunch at Slyman’s or Luxe or … if you want to go fancier …. Pier W just a couple miles away in Lakewood.
Done 🙂
