  • Would you recommend Radiology to a Medical Studentare you happy?

Posted by freshjosh_812 on April 18, 2021 at 8:51 pm

    Hey Everyone,

Current MS-1 who’s interested in Diagnostic Radiology – I think a lot of the aspects of the job fits with me (pure medicine, can help a ton of patients, wide range of specialization, leave work at work, don’t have to always deal with patients but can carry out some procedures, etc), but I was also wondering what the consensus is on by current radiologists. Are you guys happy? Would you recommend Radiology (flaws and all) to a medical student? Was just curious about what everyone thought. Thanks!

Definitely happy I chose Radiology over the others. No regrets at all. It really was the best fit for me. I have way more good days than bad.

Most of my friends in other specialties are burnt out already.

That being said, a lot of radiologists are burnt out too.

It’s not an easy job. The worst part about the field is how private equity businesses are buying and managing practices all over the country. In essence, private practice is going down the tubes. There are still plenty of good jobs, but finding them can be a challenge.

Really hard to make a recommendation, because no one can predict the future. Who knows if AI ultimately changes everything. Mammography and IR would probably always be in demand

Medical students interested in a career in radiology might enjoy the “Undifferentiated Medical Student” podcast series.

Episode 36 with an experienced MSK radiologist (who is also rumored to be quite good looking and not-at-all too fat from the pandemic) is a good place to start 😉

Thanks for the recommendation for the podcast! Loved the suggestion for the boglehead book, and the podcast was really enlightening about Radiology. Really appreciate it!

(If you made it all the way to the end to the investing part, you must really have had the stomach for it. )
