Current rate for locum?
Posted by eveli on July 21, 2023 at 2:23 pmHi,
Anyone has an idea what the current rate is for locum tenens jobs? I’m interested in rates for both general radiology and subspecialty jobs. Thanks.Unknown Member replied 1 year, 5 months ago 14 Members · 20 Replies -

Much higher than they were 12 months ago. I get multiple cold calls a week. They used to offer 2200 a day and I told them if they ever got to 3000 to call me and they never called. Now they call and offer 3000 right off the bat.
For DR I bet you can get 3250-3500 a day. Mammo and IR more, maybe 3500-3750.-
Also keep in mind rates offered by locum agency to rad are likely 25% higher to group/hospital. They are paying more than above numbers to locum agency.

Most of the locum rates I’ve seen have been 2xxx or 3xxx. Never really understood why they are so low, since these are rates you can make at home in your jammies. In my mind, to cover the hassle of travelling somewhere and working in a strange environment for a short engagement, would need a healthy premium, at least 4xxx. Do the people who go for patchwork locums assignments just have wanderlust and like travelling and seeing different parts of the country?

For IR if you also take call the floor is 3500 day / 20k week. If you do Stroke it is higher.

what is the average percentage of how much a locum agency takes as a percentage of a radiologists pay for a days work in general diagnostic radiology.
-
-
30-50%? That is highway robbery. So if pay is 3500 for a day they can take up to 1750? Wild. No wonder the employees from these locums companies are more pushy than used car salesman. What does a salesperson in a locums agency get?
-
No way they’re taking 50%. Groups aren’t paying 5-6k a day for diagnostic coverage.
The highest public postings I’ve seen are $3300ish a day for unicorns like on site pedi rad coverage. That locums company is taking $700 or less per day I bet. But part of that $700 or less is getting eaten up by hotel/car rental/flight for the locums rad.-
Recent offer: $275/hr on-site general diagnostic 80-100 studies/8 hr shift.

Weak. I wouldnt sneeze on 275 per hour for 80-100. Youre making them money at that volume. $350 an hour for that volume or fark off!
-
80-100 of what? Volume numbers mean nothing without knowing the mix.
-
if you’re doing telerad afterhours, no way your mix is mostly plain films. my guess is 30-40 ct and 50-60 plain films, plus or minus a random mri or US
-
bottom line is that you’re looking at minimum $2800 worth of work which is $350 an hour for 8 hour shift. and that’s not including the premium for working nights. Nobody should expect night people to work for less than what they are billing for… in a perfect world of course. alas, lot of telerad out there working for peanuts. hence the terrible TaT by most telerad outfits.

The $275 offer was for daytime onsite general diag, travel paid. just letting OP know what rate was floating.
IMO terrible rate, esp for onsite and with vague productivity expectations. Some people are in a bind for a multitude of reasons- and if that’s the case- they may take the bait.
That being said, $3000 onsite for breast (w. procedures) has also been offered recently.

As long as you’re an employee, you’re always going to be making your employer money. Agree that $275 is low.

That is just a dirty trick to get you CV so that they own you and you can’t get a job at that site b/c they will claim they told you about it. They could also take your CV and spam it to other sites and then they can claim you at all those sites too.
And I don’t know of any Locums jobs paying more than 4k a day. It is BS click bait. -
In general, places that give a high weekly $ probably expect 7 days of work (and 2 weekend shifts).
