[h1]Judge Luttig: There Is No Republican Party[/h1]
    J. Michael Luttig, a conservative retired federal judge and key adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence, declared on Wednesday that there is no Republican Party, [link=https://www.cnn.com/2023/08/09/politics/michael-luttig-conservative-judge-republicans-cnntv/index.html]CNN[/link] reports.
Said Luttig: American democracy simply cannot function without two equally healthy and equally strong political parties. So today, in my view, there is no Republican Party to counter the Democratic Party in the country. And for that reason, American democracy is in grave peril.
He added: A political party is a collection and assemblage of individuals who share a set of beliefs and principles and policy views about the United States of America. Today, there is no such shared set of beliefs and values and principles or even policy views as within the Republican Party for America.

    [/link]
For more than a decade, Ive thought the Republican Party was headed towards oblivion.

Thats not a partisan position. As I wrote in early 2016, [link=https://politicalwire.com/2016/01/27/how-the-bush-family-destroyed-the-republican-party/]George W. Bush broke the coalition[/link]  national security hawks, Wall Street Republicans and evangelical Christians that allowed the GOP to win a solid majority of voters during the Reagan and George H.W. Bush years.

But Republicans have not won the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections.

Donald Trumps surprise electoral college victory in 2016 merely delayed what I predicted would be the inevitable break up of the party.

Conservative attorney George Conway apparently agrees, telling the [link=https://www.thebulwark.com/podcast-episode/the-trump-defenses-that-wont-hunt-2/]Beg to Differ podcast[/link] that the Republican Party is currently destroying itself.
Thats because the GOP is caught in a vicious cycle addicted to Trump, his lies and extreme policy positions.

Said Conway: They live off of these lies, the conservative media profits off of these lies, the political consultants profit off of these lies. The congressmen basically make a living selling lies to the American people for contributions and funding. Theyre lining their pockets or providing for their necessities of life through their PACs and whatever.

He added: Theres no way out, because they basically locked in a certain number of people to these lies. Ultimately, youre going to end up with a core of the party that kind of eats itself up, and the rest of the party is just going to fall off and become independent to the extent it hasnt already.

Perhaps its just wishful thinking on Conways and my part.

But its getting harder every day to see how this ends well for Republicans.
