    I think most of us want to give gay couples the same rights as married couples.  Atleast we can agree on that.

    I think the hangup is marriage.  And it is a legitmate hangup, because for most this is a religious definition with legal connotations; while for the gay community, it is primary a legal definition.

    There are only a couple clear paths I can see to get past the impasse.  Gays could accept civil unions without marriage; they seem unwilling to sacrifice this point.  The general public could accept gay marriage; this too seems unlikely.  You can have courts impose gay marriage, like in Mass and CT; but this causes a lot of strife, and frankly causes more trouble than its worth.

    I still think my idea is the best…but that is because I am an arrogant idiot.
