For obvious reasons, gays are not denied the right to have a social security card, a library card, a boat license, a medical license, or a driver’s license.  A marriage license is not fundamentally different.  How is a person supposed to properly participate in society when he or she can’t get a simple document such as a  marriage license that is required for so many things?

Of course it’s different.  A marriage license says “We as a people recognize and condone your relationship.”  A social security card only says “We as a people recognize and condone your existence.”
