Perhaps another thing to consider is that many gay couples do get married in church.  Many gay couples are very religious.  This issue is not one of “marriage outside of church”.  It is an issue of some churches not liking the idea of same sex marriage, and then exerting political influence to persecute innocent people who do not conform to the church’s particular view of how that person is “supposed” to behave.  I have no problem with a church having a set of moral beliefs.  But it becomes a problem when the church imposes this morality on society in such a way as to interfere with its proper functioning.

For obvious reasons, gays are not denied the right to have a social security card, a library card, a boat license, a medical license, or a driver’s license.  A marriage license is not fundamentally different.  How is a person supposed to properly participate in society when he or she can’t get a simple document such as a  marriage license that is required for so many things?
