I was rather shocked to hear that this law/legislation in California has passed. In Canada, the right was determined by our constitution and therefore a gay couple can be married anywhere in Canada.
Our current Prime Minister Stephen Harper (George. W. Harper, as I like to call him) held a vote to change the constitution, but the consensus was not to alter the Constitution. There is a choice for religious institutions to allow gay marriage or not to …however ultimately the government here recognizes those unions.IMHO, I think that homosexuals are born that way for the most part– a variation of conditions leading up to trans-sexualism in its most extreme form. I suspect that years from now we will find that there are changes in the brain that causes homosexuals to be attracted to their own sex. There may be the rare person who chooses that lifestyle because of psychological reasons or trauma…but I do not believe that to be the norm. If a person cannot choose their orientation, it is cruel for a society to tell them who they can and cannot marry. The laws should be applied the same as for heterosexual married couples and common-law unions…in regard to healthcare, benefits etc.
In conclusion, years ago, one of our Prime Ministers made a famous statement…”The Government has no business in the bedrooms of its people.” For consenting adults, I believe this is true.

p.s. I chatted with my other half about this. He thought that my explanation was not accurate. He explained to me that it was our Supreme court determined that the Province of Ontario could not ban gay marriages because of our Charter of Rights. Here, marriage is under the province…and so the ruling could vary in other provinces. There are at least three provinces allowing gay marriage. As stated George W. Harper did try to initiate a challenge…but that was voted down. Provinces can challenge the Charter of Rights using the Not Withstanding clause…but this occurs very rarely.
