Rochelle Walensky under fire for ignoring CDC vaccine advisory committee recommendations when they advised against recommending Covid booster shots for healthy low risk individuals:

NYT piece on this at the time:
”The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday overruled a recommendation by an agency advisory panel that had refused to endorse [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/24/us/booster-shots-pfizer-vaccine-cdc.html]booster shots[/link] of the Pfizer-BioNTech [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/21/health/cdc-booster-shot-eligibility.html]Covid vaccine[/link] for frontline workers. It was a highly unusual move for the director, [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/24/us/booster-shots-pfizer-vaccine-cdc.html]Dr. Rochelle Walensky[/link], but aligned C.D.C. policy with the Food and Drug Administrations endorsements over her own agencys advisers.”
Yet ~everyone who says they “followed the science” refused to acknowledge that there was room for reasonable experts to disagree on this– which, per above, they did.
A decision was made to pretend we knew more than we did and simplify the message. Didn’t work, and vaccine hesitancy has increased in many places (not just the political right in the US). Lack of forthrightness by our leaders was a big mistake.
I suspect that in the US views on the left have also changed, but in the opposite direction, now with almost blind trust of FDA and any other government agency. That will lead to its own problems in time.
