it’s ok (it’s actually imperatve) for employers to tighten the belt in these uncertain times, and i acknowledge that that doesn’t sound nice for residents/fellows looking at jobs. but a lot of folks are really struggling with the thought of sticking to their earlier retirement outlays when their portfolios have taken a big hit of late. many are really highfunctioning radiologists who just simply wanted to stop working because they thought they could afford to.

so working 12hr days x6days isn’t that big a deal for many, espeacially when compared to taking on 1 FTE. and being forced to take 12 or so weeks of vacation or some rigid no. is not always fair or desirable for all.

what’s an applicant to do? if you see a decent opportunity and the location fits – take it. if you have to skip fellowship, skip it. market yourself rather broadly with all the tools you have – cold calls, ACR jobsite, etc. etc., including old residents/fellows from your program. be willing to do many things you didn’t always like – like mammo, nucs, etc.
