I’ve been saying this on this board for a long time now. We are training about 25% more radiologists than are needed which is going to translate into alot of pain for all of us who devoted 10 years and hundreds of thousands of dollars to this field. Teleradiology has been able to fill the shortage of radiologists that was evident a few years ago. The academic institutions used this shortage to pump up their residencies programs because they can give a crap what happens to the private practice world. You don’t see any of the great specialties rushing to add positions (rad onc, derm, etc) the way radiology residencies have.

If the ACR had any balls, it would go around the country and shut down marginal residency programs that exist only to have residents to take call. I can name at least 4 in New York alone.

Expect salaries to drop 20-50% depending on the local market as a 1000+ radiologists are dumped on the market every year from here on out.
