I don’t know any details of the groups mentioned earlier. However, SD is a tight market. Every year UCSD gets some 25-30 fellows. Many of these fellows fall in love with SD and want to stay local. Moreover, every year a whole bunch of people from places like Boston and NY want to relocate to San Diego.
Given the ample number of candidates, the groups can be very selective. More importantly they probably have long partnership tracks with low starting salary…etc…etc…. It may be that junior associates/partners end up doing more call and get paid much less.
