What is toxic for the kids is your public school teachers talking to them about selecting their pronoun, letting them change their gender w/o parents knowledge, and counseling them about a condition they are not qualified to be discussing. All my kids are homeschooled, oldest entering 10th grade. It’s a big responsibility but if done well it’s a much better experience than conventional school, whether public or private, for many reasons, ranging from socialization to quality of education to efficiency to a more tailored curriculum. Don’t criticize things you don’t understand.

Heres a portrait of a homeschooled teen. My 15 year old son has trained in BJJ since age 4, at times up to 6 days a week, has competed a dozen times and medaled about half of those, and has been doing barbell lifts 3-4x a week consistently for 2 years. He taps out some full grown men on mats, grass, and asphalt, like his dad. Unlike his dad, hes not on social media, spends zero minutes a day on a smartphone because hes never had one, is on debate team and competes, has three English classes including one of them with a private tutor, and reads the Atlantic most days for fun. He rides his bike to his grandparents house three days a week to take his grandfather who has mild Parkinsons on walks and to learn from his grandmother how to cook. He goes fishing every chance he gets and does jobs to pay for his bait and tackle. He helps me teach group handgun classes once in a while and consistently puts 10 of 10 rounds of 9mm in one ragged hole at 10 feet, and can field strip his Glock with his eyes closed. He is up at 6am to pray Fajr every morning, and takes the trash out to the bins at night. He doesnt use foul language and considers that a character flaw that often hides some insecurity. He knows how to look other men in the eye and hold their gaze without looking away and how to give a firm handshake and a generous smile. His best friends are also homeschooled and are polite to adults and young children. He wants to be an orthopedic surgeon when he grows up and has started taking some classes at the local junior college for dual high school / college credit, and will be spending this summer shadowing my good friend who is a hand surgeon and co-owner of a wrestling gym. I am proud of him as he knows that having good character and being respected by honest men is better than making lots of money or having nice things or being one of the cool kids.

What I find amazing is the homeschooling parents who have their own issues with public schools for their own reasons are now the experts on child rearing and child sports including the new boogie man of – transgender athletes

First off I played collegiate baseball. My wife was state high jump champion and a collegiate athlete. We have both been around athletics and youth and collegiate athletics our entire lives-Never saw a transgender athlete

We both went to public schools and both of our kids are pretty good athletes in public schools and neither has ever played against or even seen a transgender athlete

No one would prefer to send their kids to a rough public school with lots of drug use, gang violence, and poor student teacher ratio. Of course you want your kids to go to a better school that is safer with more offerings like sports and AP classes. No one would consider that being inappropriate sheltering, though sheltering it is, same way as living in a safe neighborhood is sheltering.

All children will get exposed to the world at some point. Part of our job as parents to put them in rich dark soil where they can thrive and establish deep roots and grow thick trunks and tall branches without bugs or plant disease screwing them up before they become strong.

Sheltering them to some degree – more when they are younger and more impressionable, less as they become older and stronger – is an essential part of our job as parents. No one would want their kid experimenting with hard drugs, and preventing that is a form of sheltering and is the right thing to do.

Socialization is the process of learning the values and behavior considered appropriate by a society, and there are many societies in a given place and time. Every child goes through this process, its not a matter of whether they get enculturated or not, its a matter of what particular set of values and behaviors they consider to be norms.

If the values and behaviors at a given elementary school is what you hope your child to become socialized to, then great, they are in the right place. It does take a village. If the values and behaviors at the school are at odds with what you want your child to be socialized to, then put them somewhere else.

I also went to public school all throughout. The fact that me and my friends in grade school used to torment the retarded kids, or that a few of our star athletes in high school overdosed on drugs or were arrested, and I still turned out okay, is not a good reason to want my kids to have the same experience as me. These are a game of odds, and like Sun Tzu says, whoever has more favorable odds on their side is more likely to win a battle.

I dont presume that homeschooling is best for everyone, or that there is one foolproof way to do this parenthood thing.

I certainly dont know you Chirorad and would not say you made good or bad choices, or are a good or bad parent. Thats not courtesy, thats just the reality of what I dont know about people on an anonymous forum.

This thread has been extremely hard to read but this is one highlight that made me feel better about young people being raised these days. If there is one consistent among those I know who are well respected in their community, financially responsible and have friends from all walks of life, it’s the ability to be polite, kind and look another in the eye and shake their hand. Fine, fist bump in the pandemic world but definitely engage with eye contact.

There may be other people here who are, but I am not transphobic. All LGBTQ, all people, deserve to be treated with respect. I argued in another thread that biological men transitioning into women should not compete in competitive sports against biological women because of fairness and safety. That is more than reasonable. 
 
Wrestling and Jiu Jitsu are not gay or sexual. All young men should do several years of either, it builds confidence and makes a better man.

There was some confusion, I am not in Colorado, that was the other fellow, when I said  “I was just there” I meant at jiu jitsu class grappling other guys, i.e. it’s not something unusual for me to do. Going to beautiful Colorado, on the other hand, would be quite unusual for me.   
I don’t have a problem with people criticizing homeschooling or debating its merits or that of any education. There’s just no need for personal attacks of other forum members and their children, it changes the feel of the forum from an online community to something else.

And of course, its always based on ‘the highest qualified candidates’, right. A local surgery program found that every year the group of ‘highest qualified candidates’ were white boys who had attended the same undergrad as the old farts on the residency selection committee. Chairman shook up the committee and slowly the residency program started to look like the medical student population at large. 
 
So while it’s funny just how lopsided that Stanford class ended up, I can see how this was by accident.  Even if you make your matchlist alternating male/female, if most of your highly ranked males decide to go somewhere else but all your females had you as #1, you can accidentally end up with that kind of 90/10 ratio. The conclusion of the right wing author who wrote that hit piece that this must be the result of discrimination is definitely not accurate.

I’ve seen it happen in a residency program. GME gets all wound up and demands the program recruits a more diverse class. Rank list for the top 20 is all female, brown and black. Low and behold the match yields 4 white guys. But of course it’s the program’s fault.

But Stanford probably doesnt go too deep into their matchlist. They ranked the ones they ended up with near the top. No doubt in my mind.

Those that say they have made matchlists yadds yadds you are mostly likely not in the elite top tier. So your final outcome is a lot more random. Harvard, stanford and another 2-3 institutions are not typically random at all.

It’s like when I was in medical school even 2 decades ago. A friend was on the admissions committee. He was actually honest, a libertarian but from NY or the northeast somewhere, so it was funny. He told me “Everyone is going for the same, exceedingly small number of candidates, who happen to be black.” Meaning that there was a very small number of actually qualified people. Which then I saw when matriculated, but whatever, it was what it was – a lie – they were lucky to get 1 or 2 … but hey, there’s always family medicine. Problem was, they got partial or full rides. And this was a majorly esteemed institution.
 
The question is then, why would you want a questionable person, when they also have the skin color thing to boot, which likely means (especially now) that you can’t boot them. Very difficult to legislate though. Choosing candidates is not just about the numbers. Why do you think they want everything pass fail now? Makes it easier to do whatever they want with impunity.

For example if they had an asian candidate with near perfect scores and they have a decent interview, how could they possibly rank them low? That would be discriminatory. But eliminate all scores and they can do whatever they want wity impunity.

They want to eliminate merit based admissions period, full stop. Harvard is currently being sued with allegations of discrimination against asians. Well see how that shakes out.
