Vrad has a 3 year commitment?!
Posted by alex.nieto_484 on April 26, 2023 at 12:30 pmI recently spoke to a Vrad recruiter and was surprised to hear that they make the rads sign a 3 year contract with a $15,000 penalty for leaving early. They don’t have a signing bonus so this isn’t a signing bonus that you pay back but a legitimate penalty they charge you for leaving.
The market is tight right now so I thought that might have a more appealing pitch.al.georgiev_193 replied 1 year, 5 months ago 11 Members · 14 Replies -

No love for vrad here. But they do spend money to get you credentialed at multiple sites including potentially multiple state licenses etc. They are running a business and dont want to eat that up front cost if people are likely to leave in a short period of time for a better opportunity.
With that said, no doubt it doesnt help them recruit. Who wants to sign up for a low per rvu pay rate and be on the hook for 15k if you change your mind and find something better a year later. I feel like a better option would be to pay a signup bonus of 50k that has to be paid back with interest if you leave within 3 years. More carrot and less stick seems like a better plan if your goal is to recruit and retain. I dont know who in their right mind signs up for this gig. I can only imagine it is someone with either low ambition, laziness or lack of confidence to find something better for themselves

i’m definitely not a vrad/telerad schill. it’s certainly not for the slow reader/ocd types.-

Vrad is RP. They have bigger legal battles to fight now with the United suit. I am pretty sure you can leave whenever you want without much consequence.

Leave the onsite work and eat what you kill rates to the big boys voxeled. While not 100%, tele reads are in general pretty low quality reads either due to sheer volume they read or just lower quality rads gravitating to it. I have seen some farely horrific misreads. Exception is vision radiology. They have a stellar crew. Im sure youre the exception though, voxeled. I also heard tele rads have a higher than normal lawsuit number in general. Guess its because of the number of cases you have to read to make ends meet.

15 K penalty is trash.
First, slash 50% off that amount due to taxes you will save, so real cost at the personal level is about 7.5 K.
Second, any other group worth its salt will offer you to cover that cost and even up the ante with a decent sign on bonus — just bring it up in initial negotiations discussions.
Third, if you go to a true PP group run by decent rads with even average accounts — you will make up whatever loss there was in a week.-

I don’t disagree. 15k isn’t breaking the bank for any of us but it just seems so out of touch. Most places are offering signing bonuses and other perks and vRad decides their recruiting strategy for one of the worst jobs in the country in a super tight market is a penalty for leaving before 3 years.-
The PE model is predicated on trying to trap radiologists and making it difficult for them to leave.
I have heard about some crazy restrictive things in PE contracts.
For people considering jobs – spend as much time looking at your options if you decide you want to leave as you do with salary and benefits before you sign a contract. Penalties, paying back bonuses, paying for your own tail, and restrictive covenants are all things to take seriously even if you dont think you will ever leave.

Im not sure if a penalty for leaving is legal but its not worth the money to consult with a lawyer if you were seriously considering the gig ask them to remove that from the contract. Additionally remove noncompetes and overly long notice periods. People so desperate right now I think they will negotiate that sort of thing.
If not, can always offer to do locums. Since they are so backed up they would probably give you as many locums shifts as you want for a year or so, till market turns. Yes you have to cover your own health insurance (unless married) but lets be honest its not a big expense.

That’s terrible. I work for another tele company (not Vrad or RP) but there’s a 10k penalty if you leave within 1 year for recouping credentialing costs. 3 year restrictive covenant is absurd, especially right now the way the market is. They’re just trying to trap you.

I think the credentialing headaches of leaving one of those big tele groups would bother me more than losing $15K
