Too many Indians in radiology (#BLM)
Hello fellow radiologists,
As we enter a new, long-delayed era of race consciousness, Id like to spread awareness of how Black Lives Matter impacts all fields of medicine including our own. To foster the goals of diversion and inclusivity, radiology- and all of medicine for that matter- should strive to look more like America. To that end, Indian-Americans, who make up only 1% of the population, are an over-represented group in our field. Something like 10-20% of most medical school classes are Indian-American students these days, a problematic phenomenon.
Moreover, Indians are a very successful group on America. The parents of Indian-Americans are often well off doctors and high technology workers. Why should their children disproportionately benefit from the structural racism of todays America when they are living such privileged lives?
Not only that, but my Indian-American friends tell me that Indian-Americans disproportionately come from upper castes in India (Brahmins, Banias, Patels, etc)those same castes that have succeeded at the expense of the lower castes. Why should we reward them for their thousands of years of exclusionary practices?
Its time to make radiology look more like America.
