Dead man switch feature… always on

Also, get a head set…. only use the dictaphone as an on button (will save your cubical tunnel too)

I used to work at a practice where the dictaphone was activated by a foot pedal. I never used it but that could be a solution.

Any solution for scrolling …I guess that can cause arthritis too.

Get your own mouse which ergonomically fits your hand, preferably programmable and with a flywheel. I just got one in my first month of fellowship and I’m kicking myself for not doing so 4 years ago. Some of the residents rolled their eyes at me for not having done so sooner, and the attendings look at me like I’m practicing witchcraft when I can switch series, drop an ROI, or change windowing without touching the keyboard.

Bonus that in the days of COVID there’s still another mouse connected, so nobody needs to touch yours.

I use the foot pedal a lot. Also you can put the dictaphone on a holder. Then use your foot to turn on the dictaphone, speak into the microphone (that is not in your hand but held by the holder). You can use another button on the pedal to advance to next field or speak into the mike. and if you have to use the mike once in a while it is still there. This does decrease the use of thumb on the mike.

As for the mouse/scrolling. I havent found a good solution. Ive messed around with programming gamer mice. But they all have draw backs. Im very less efficient when not used in the traditional mouse way to scroll.

I had the same issue and purchased a microphone holder (didn’t need the microphone). I put the Nuance mic in the holder, dead switch red on all the time, use foot pedal to turn on and off if needed, and dictate cases without even touching the mic. My left hand is free.

I miss ‘Miss Linda’ who wore her readers on one of these chains and came by every two hours to exchange a stack of paper reports for another tape.

Heh.  That was when 20 CTs a shift was ‘busy’.  “Hey, Frank, can you do reformats on that last case?”  (bzzz screech as 56k modem negotiates connection)

Just the opposite. This was an extremely busy solo practice, and having live transcription was the only way to sustain that pace. Cases were hung on alternators. No need to fidget with any software. The little tape recorder was voice-activated. ’Name, DOB, normal chest' or ’Name, DOB, head CT old' would get me a signature ready report.
While I was there, we switched to powerscribe + editor. I made lots of noise to keep the editor and the hit on my productivity wasn’t bad, maybe 20%. I left later that year, hospital promptly fired the in-house transcription team. My successor in the practice didn’t last 6 months.

cervical spine and hand arthritis seem to be common issues for rads.

you do not get arthritis from using a dictaphone but rather fatigue from muscle overuse

They make a foot pedal.
Use voice commands.
Use deadman switch.

‘Also you can put the dictaphone on a holder.’
As above from PeeDee.
I do the same, use a cell phone holder with a soft chamois and rubber band to hold it, keep it always on. Turn it off if rad comes in  the room or phone call. Put it on a plastic clipboard on the table.

PowerScribe dictaphone fits nicely, but need band to hold it and chamois or small soft cloth to prevent vibration, tilt, etc.
Solves all the overuse syndromes except the scroll issue.

A few years ago my right index finger started aching over a weekend.  I eventually realized it was because I forgot to take the naprosyn for my back.  So now I scroll with different fingers so I just down burn out one.

I’m glad I don’t read a ton of CT or lots of studies with big stacks.  Scrolling hasn’t been an issue for me.   (PFs are just “next layout” and sports MRs just don’t give you that same slive overload)
