The Obama Trump relationship, transition and after
Posted by btomba_77 on December 29, 2016 at 7:12 amIn November, Obama went out of his way to be gracious to Trump and new Preident-Elect. He was helpful in giving advice, said all the right things about wanting Trump to succeed and managing the peaceful transfer of power with a smooth transition between administrations.
That was November.
This is now:
Trump’s most recent tweets on the matter: “Doing my best to disregard the many inflammatory President O statements and roadblocks. Thought it was going to be a smooth transition – NOT!
Today in [i]Politico[/i]: [link=http://www.politico.com/story/2016/12/trump-obama-transition-233023][b]Obama getting under Trump’s skin:[/b]Trump and his closest advisers are bothered by Obama’s critical comments and what they see as an effort to undermine the president-elect with last-minute policy changes.[/link]
Donald Trump cant decide whether he thinks the transition of power is going well or not.
But he knows he doesnt like how much attention Barack Obama is getting and is also bothered by what Trump and his closest advisers see as an active effort to poke the president-elect and undermine the incoming administration with last-minute policy changes on his way out of office, according to two people close to the transition. And the relationship is likely to get worse in the three weeks until the inauguration: Obama is scheduled to give a farewell address Jan. 10 that is expected to be a recounting of his successes and an inherent contrast with Trump and the administration is rushing to make public a report on Russian hacking during the election that intelligence officials say was done to help Trump, though the president-elect has disputed that entirely.
…Trump also has been irked, according to transition officials, by other recent moves by the outgoing president. Obamas decisions to permanently ban oil and gas drilling in portions of the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, to eliminate dormant regulations requiring males from certain largely-Muslim countries to register with immigration authorities, and to issue pardons and commutations have also raised eyebrows around the president-elect.
For the future, it doesn’t look as if Obama is planning to STFU and quietly retire to his Texas ranch to paint water colors. He is openly planning to be overtly political.
Given that the Democrats have no current national leader, I envision Obama being quite active and speaking regularly about a “what could have been” alternate America to Trump’s.I could see that feud getting nasty. We’ve already seen that Obama is willing to be less cordial when unencumbered by political constraints. I bet he takes it up a notch shortly after leaving.

It’s time the Democrats find a leader in the post Obama era.
Is there anyone with anywhere close to the charisma of an Obama or who can carry the required demographics to win the next presidential election?
Cory Booker? (doubtful) Elizabeth Warren (comes off as too whiny and prissy) Kamala Harris (good looking African American woman with some charisma).
Maybe Harris?-
All I said was Thank God Obama didn’t have a son.
Saved us from more failures, annoyances, and greater degrees of incompetent “legacies”-
Well. Obama might be upset that all the things he quick signed on, may be over turned (as so broadcasted by the Republicans). Therefore, he’s getting his last digs in at Trump… legally. But again, he can be spiteful and demeaning and get away with being a wonderful strategist and caring person. Like I’ve always said, lawyer based politicians are snake oil salesmen and cads. Big Hats, no Cattle.
No one… No one has had more class than the Bushs’ during the time of transition. Their house was in order and their staff respected the office. Not this Administrations staff. To many GenX losers.-

Keith Ellison is the man. He can broaden the appeal of the party and unite with his proven leadership skills.

-
Keith Ellison has way to much baggage in such a short time period—he has been reprimanded by his own state and paid a fine for non disclosure;-then he was sued twice by his own state AG;-his controversial statement on affirmative action and Israel/plus association with Farrakhan would make him a gift to the GOP that is why FOX is interviewing and lastly he had liens put on him for not filing taxes for several years plus drove car without license and got a ton of tickets–he is not the right fit though the GOP would love to have a Muslin ahead of the DNC try to go into the south and get votes

NYT: [url=http://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/05/us/politics/trump-ambassadors.html?smid=fb-share] In Break With Precedent, Obama Envoys Are Denied Extensions Past Inauguration Day[/url]
President-elect Donald J. Trumps transition staff has issued a blanket edict requiring politically appointed ambassadors to leave their overseas posts by Inauguration Day, according to several American diplomats familiar with the plan, breaking with decades of precedent by declining to provide even the briefest of grace periods.
The mandate issued without exceptions, according to a terse State Department cable sent on Dec. 23, diplomats who saw it said threatens to leave the United States without Senate-confirmed envoys for months in critical nations like Germany, Canada and Britain. In the past, administrations of both parties have often granted extensions on a case-by-case basis to allow a handful of ambassadors, particularly those with school-age children, to remain in place for weeks or months.
Mr. Trump, by contrast, has taken a hard line against leaving any of President Obamas political appointees in place as he prepares to take office on Jan. 20 with a mission of dismantling many of his predecessors signature foreign and domestic policy achievements. Political ambassadors, many of them major donors who are nominated by virtue of close ties with the president, almost always leave at the end of his term; ambassadors who are career diplomats often remain in their posts.
…Incoming presidents of both parties have often made exceptions to allow ambassadors to wrap up personal affairs and important diplomatic business while their successors were in the confirmation process, which can take months. Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Mr. Obama all granted extensions for a few politically appointed ambassadors. …Former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell offered particularly wide latitude to ambassadors facing family issues, said Marc Grossman, a longtime diplomat and former top State Department official who is vice chairman of the Cohen Group, a Washington consultancy.

if the democrats wanted to change, and I think they need to after getting drummed, They should’ve booted the Nancy Pelosi. That also just furthers the point we should get money out of politics, do campaign finance reform.

Yet, Obamas’ people did duplicate his rants, so did Pelosi, Reed and Wasserman. That’s why the Dems lost. HRC could not run on her own agenda. His trash smell carried over to HRC.
Was Springsteen invited? I don’t think so. Neither was Rosanne Barr. You can’t claim an Artist is declining to play at the inauguration just because they weren’t invited. Skynard refused to play at Obamas’ right?.
Maybe Kanye will play at Trumps. The Republicans to need to keep up with being hip and dropping the F-Bomb at public events like JayZ did for HRC. Class… total class.-

I read something from Gary Kasperov, the Chess Master, about pendulum politics that makes sense. Something like as we go along each new administration has such a hard on to undo things from the last administration that we get these massive swings left and right. I think he makes a really good point, in that we’re better off in the middle. Don’t try and completely undo, but work in the middle and fix something. Don’t like Obamacare, make fixes.-

[url=https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/21/us/politics/barack-obama-post-presidential-events.html]Obama to return to public life next week[/url]
Barack Obamas extended post-presidential vacation is about to end. After spending weeks in French Polynesia including time on the yacht of the movie mogul David Geffen along with Bruce Springsteen, Tom Hanks and Oprah Winfrey Mr. Obama will return to Chicago on Monday for his first public event as a former president.
His self-imposed silence since Inauguration Day will end with a series of events over the next four weeks. A Monday town hall-style meeting with students at the University of Chicago will be followed by an awards ceremony in Boston; a series of public remarks as well as private paid speeches in the United States and Europe; and an appearance at the Brandenburg Gate in Germany with Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Mr. Obamas aides say he will also not criticize Mr. Trump in his private paid speeches. …Mr. Obama has also concluded that his voice is not essential in the daily back-and-forth. … Instead, Mr. Obama is preparing remarks that focus on broader themes he hopes will keep him above the cable-television combat and the Capitol Hill debates: civic engagement, the health of the planet, the need for diplomacy, civil rights and the development of a new generation of young American leaders.

Obama couldn’t care less? Except that he is clearly shaken and his much more to worry about than what you deceivers claim, just check out the recently leaked audio call with former aides.
Ha, he’s so stone cold sure of himself and the past is so irrelevant he has to worry about what’s going on currently. And he should be worried. I think the only thing he’s glad about is that Brennan and Clapper, Comey will be fall guys.

Unless… they squeal on Obama. I don’t see loyalists within their party anymore who are willing to take the fall for the guy. They are all soap box opportunists. The president has frequently accused others of treason, but Monday marked the first time that he has leveled that claim against the man who preceded him in the Oval Office.[link=https://twitter.com/DavidBrodyCBN/status/1275197264873521154]https://twitter.com/DavidBrodyCBN/status/1275197264873521154[/link]

I like the claim “No Evidence”, it appears there is, it’s been talked about for quite a while, little hints provided while being investigated. You think Trump is doing a Schiff? Not even close. So, Dergon, you are saying that the DNC did not spy, illegally sought information, dug up, paid for exaggerated dossier with their own funds, washed their candidates illegal server, because Trump was running verses the other candidates? They went after him. Solely after him to find dirt and they did it Illegally and Obama knew about it.

[b]Obama Unleashes on Trump in Private[/b][/h1]
At fund-raising events where he has pulled in more than $24 million for Joe Bidens campaign in the past two months, former President Barack Obama has privately unleashed on President Trump to party donors, bringing up past accusations of Mr. Trumps assaulting women and warning of his efforts to push nativist, racist, sexist fears and resentments, the [link=https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/30/us/politics/obama-trump-biden.html]New York Times[/link] reports.
With less than 100 days until the presidential election, Mr. Obama has laid out the stakes of 2020 in forceful fashion. He has urged support for Mr. Biden, his former vice president, while worrying about the state of American democracy itself, even making an oblique reference to Nazi Germany. -
Excerpts President Barack Obamas speech tonight were released:
I never expected that my successor would embrace my vision or continue my policies. I did hope, for the sake of our country, that Donald Trump might show some interest in taking the job seriously; that he might come to feel the weight of the office and discover some reverence for the democracy that had been placed in his care. But he never did.

[h1][link=https://thehill.com/homenews/the-memo/512870-the-memo-obama-enters-battle-enraging-trump]The Memo: Obama enters battle, enraging Trump[/link][/h1] (lots of ALL CAPS from Trump}
Former President Obama returned to the political battlefield with full force on Wednesday and immediately got under the skin of his successor.
Obama cast [link=https://thehill.com/people/donald-trump]President Trump[/link] as an [link=https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/512862-obama-casts-trump-as-threat-to-democracy]existential threat to American democracy[/link] during his speech to the Democratic National Convention. Such an intervention by a former president against his successor is unprecedented in recent history but merited, in Obamas view, given the stakes.
This administration has shown it will tear our democracy down if thats what it takes to win, Obama said near the climax of his speech.
The president responded in two all-caps tweets, one accusing Obama of having SPIED ON MY CAMPAIGN and another asking why Obama had refused to ENDORSE SLOW JOE UNTIL IT WAS ALL OVER.…
Obama accused him of using members of the military as political props to deploy against peaceful protesters on our own soil. He complained about Trumps propensity to cast critics as un-American. And, on the coronavirus pandemic, he said that any successful outcome depends on a fidelity to facts and science and logic, and not just making stuff up.
Such criticisms will enrage Trump not that Obama will necessarily be bothered by that outcome. Obama, almost four years after leaving the White House, remains more popular than Trump, and the kind of attacks that Trump was already mounting on Wednesday evening could backfire.
-
Obama needs to remember he only became so popular after he left office. It doesn’t look good to have a former President be so vocal about the current. I much preferred the unspoken policy of not criticizing the person who came after you – as done by all previous Presidents of both parties.
Trump is dumb for even engaging him though, to be honest. He should just ignore him.-
No he shouldn’t… this one is too important.
___
[link=https://www.politico.com/news/2020/08/20/obama-torches-trump-like-american-democracy-depends-on-it-399108]Ryan Lizza[/link]: The former president delivered a memorable speech that balanced torching the sitting president with assuring voters of the possibility of something better. All the while, he pulled back the historical view to 30,000 feet where it was possible to show voters the sweep of American history and remind them that the country, despite what he called these dark times, has faced bigger challenges than Trump.
Obama accused Trump of failing to discover some reverence for the democracy that had been placed in his care. He essentially accused him of corruption and abuse of power, saying Trump had no interest in using the awesome power of his office to help anyone but himself and his friends. And he accused his successor of a dangerous form of narcissism when he said that Trump had no interest in treating the presidency as anything but one more reality show that he can use to get the attention he craves.
-
That’s rich considering Obama’s administration is currently under investigation.
He is right though that things have been way worse than now.
I’m not not going to argue with you about Obama because you clearly love the guy but both him and Trump have been pretty bad Presidents (although in much different ways).-

[b]Trump Makes Obamas Point In Real Time[/b][/h1]
[link=https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/20/politics/barack-obama-dnc-speech-donald-trump-joe-biden/index.html]Stephen Collinson[/link]: The latest installment of the long duel between Barack Obama and Donald Trump perfectly exemplified the jarring contrasts in personal and political temperaments of the two defining White House residents of this age. And it took their rivalry to a level unprecedented in the modern history of the presidency.
Obama serious and intellectual delivered a complex constitutional lecture on primetime television during the virtual Democratic National Convention. He summoned historic sweep, encompassing the Founders, the Civil Rights Movement, Americas immigrant heritage and young Americans he called to action today to save their freedoms just as their ancestors had done every time the countrys promise was imperiled.
Trump meanwhile, back at the White House, was rage-tweeting in real time in all-caps, flinging wild accusations and lies that, if anything, provided contemporaneous evidence of his predecessors somber warnings.
[link=https://www.axios.com/obama-dnc-speech-d7326f30-dab1-4c1c-af78-ff1dc5f28f8d.html]Axios[/link]: It was an extraordinary moment in American history an ex-president saying the sitting president would tear down our democracy to hold power.

And I’m right in line with the American public and historians on Trump v Obama legacy. Obama will be a “top half” and maybe “top quartile” President. Trump will be viewed as the worst or nearly the worst President in US history. -
